  • Well it almost seemed like the day was going to fly by without any View Askew 5 news to share with ya - Luckily, Kevin ran down the cast for the new flick by allowing audience members to shout out actors names and confirming or denying their involvement with View Askew 5. And boy oh boy, do we have some great casting news for you:

    October 16, 2000

  • Wizard Magazine features an interesting article in their new November 2000 issue, featuring some of the same 'ol news, but some way cool new tidbits as well, including the fact that Kevin does indeed hope to invite YOU back into town to participate as extras in the flick, just like they did with Dogma! Could it be yet another chance to be in a View Askew film? Even better, the FINAL Jay & Silent Bob film?

Other interesting stuff: Chris Rock's involvement is tentative, and Kev plans to touch on obscurities such as the Superman script fiasco. Sounds like this one's really gonna please us die-hard fans. Filming is still slated to start in December. Here's the details, couresy of Wizard:

'Clerks 2' Scrapped - Smith Secretive about 'View Askew 5'

Part of being a director? Changing your direction.

That's what writer/director Kevin Smith has done. His much anticipated fifth film has changed. "Even though we teased it at the end of 'Dogma' last year, the next flick is NOT Clerks 2."

Smith is permanantly scrapping "Clerks 2", the sequel to his award winning debut "Clerks". A new film with the working title "View Askew 5" will take its place.

"Initially I thought Clerks 2 would make sense as a bookend," Smith relayed." But the story is no longer about [clerks] Dante and Randal. We have one very important story to wrap up that began in 'Clerks' and carried through all four flicks. It doesn't take a genius to figure out whose story I'm talking about."

Smith remained tight-lipped on the title ("The minute we give it out, it's blown as to what the movie's about,") but promised the "'VA5 will touch on everything I've been involved with over the last six years: 'Good Will Hunting', the Clerks cartoon, comics, even the 'Superman' flick.".

Smith also let fly with the casting details. Jason Lee will play 2 roles, and Ben Affleck will appear. Smith says that "Dogma" star Chris Rock is tentative. There will also "new faces that haven't been cast yet."

As with any Smith film, in-jokes about his previous films will abound-even references to Dogma, where the appearance of God on Earth wiped the characters' memories clean. "Two cats in particular recall the events of Dogma," Smith says,"But most character think they are high."

Those cats, Jay and Silent Bob will make their final celluloid apperance." Yes, this is the movie that closes the ViewAskewniverse," Smith says. "It's the last movie for any of these guys."

But the characters won't go away entirely. "Any dangling plot threads will eventually wind up as part of the Clerks comic book. We're going do a Steve, Dave, and Walt tale and the then the Mallrats comic sequel, Mallrats :Die Hard in a Mall. Should be fun."

But all that will be after "VA5". Smith is currently working on his fifth draft of the script. Producer Scott Mosier is budgeting, with an eye to to begin filming in December 2000, on Smith's usual stomping grounds of Red Bank, N.J. So drop by - many View Askew fans were extras in "Dogma."

"Granted, these were large crowd scenes, not speaking parts. But it gave our fans - all eight of them, I think, a chance to be a part of the magic," Smith said. "We'll probably do the same for 'VA5.'"

Smith said fans should check his Website (www.viewaskew.com) for updates. "But please," he said. "Don't send tape of your acting abilities. We only use them to record 'Law and Order' episodes over."

  • Things continue to pop around on the net that drive speculation about what the mysterious "View Askew 5" will involve, plotwise. We've received a few theories through e-mail already, that range from pure speculation to rumors overheard when hanging around in Red Bank. Still, News Askew is unaware of ANY plot details on the film at this time and, even if we were to hear a lot of specifics, we'll screen any information through the main offices to keep any leaks to a minimum. This doesn't mean that we won't be providing in-depth coverage, since we will, we just expect to save a few secrets until the curtain goes up on the final Jay & Bob flick.

Kevin will undoubtedly start revealing the first of the much-anticipated information leaks personally as his "Developing The Monkey" column begins at Psycomic tomorrow. News Askew will be linking to the stories, but we urge you to surf directly over to Psycomic to read them.

The "Monkey" element of the column title has caused great speculation on the movie itself. Will Suzanne, the money that Jay & Bob walked off into the sunset with in Mallrats, to return? Judging from the story Kevin often tells at appearances, probably not. Could be an interesting clue, though.

The Jason Lee interview at Filmforce, which our scoopers wrote to remind us about, ran its final installment recently, in which Lee revealed he would be making two CAMEOS as Banky and Brodie. Many fans had hoped for a flick which would feature Lee, as he's the favorite, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he and many of the other characters had just a scene or two in the movie, with Jay & Silent Bob as the glue that holds it all together. Kevin himself has said he's casting some new actors, which would mean less screentime for the existing cast, and has also tightened up the script a bit to make a much shorter film. We'd expect this one to end up somewhere between 90 and 110 minutes, more like Mallrats. With so many characters from the past films to cover, cameos will not only allow things to be wrapped up, but will accomodate folks like Affleck and Lee who have busy filming schedules lined up already. Small roles would allow them a day or two on the set and that's that.

Again, this is all speculation, and may be totally wrong, but it's fun considering the possibilities. What do you think? Use the talkbacks to express your opinions.

View Askew 5 coverage will continue here, and probably go full blast after Vulgarthon, so stick around. We're hoping to again be the authority on the film and make a set visit or two for some exclusive first-hand internet coverage. Stay tuned.

  • Kevin checked in with the big news that is Psycomic column, that was originally going to be a weekly rant on the comics industry, has surprisingly turned into a behind-the-scenes journal on the preproduction of View Askew 5! Way, way cool. So, expect some juicy stuff, and probably the first revelations on the cast and plot of this mysterious flick, to appear exclusively at Psycomic (and maybe here if we can get any reprint permission) as soon as this Friday. You'll be able to read the columns at this address: http://www.psycomic.com/columns/2000/ksmith/, starting this Friday, the 13th! Here's Kevin's announcement:
      Just an update...

The column is now called 'Developing the Monkey'. It still debuts on Friday, but it's not about comics. Instead, I chose to chronicle pre-production on 'VA5'. I turned in my first four columns, and they detail the casting trip we just took to L.A. It's some pretty inside stuff that I think you'll all enjoy.

Also, I've seen the prototype for the DVD Case we're going to start selling. It's really fucking gorgeous. We should start soliciting for it next week. Big kudos to Paul Champagne for what's probably the sweetest piece of swag we've ever sold.

Paul's original gold CD cases were really slick, so we're really looking forward to seeing what the new product looks like. Trust us, they're worth your dough whether you have the discs, plan to buy the discs, or just want to put something cool on your old VHS shelf to pretend with.

  • There's tons of exciting stuff going on behind the scenes at View Askew Productions, and Kevin's stopped by the web board to give everyone the exclusive scoop on all the great stuff. In short, read on for the latest on the Dogma and Clerks Cartoon DVD Special Editions, which are shaping up to be the 2 best reasons to ask Santa for a DVD player this Christmas if you don't already have one, Kevin's new online column, casting happening for View Askew 5, and lots, lots more. There's no need for us to say any more when Kevin said it so well himself:
Here's my big announcement for the week...

As of Friday, October 13th, I become a columnist.

I'll be doing a weekly column for the folks at Psycomic.com about... well, comics (though I'll probably wind up talking about much more than that). If you're a comics fan, check out the site (Joe and Gabe, the guys in charge, are doing a great job with it). If you're not, then at least pop in to make fun of grown men who're obsessed with funny books that are neither funny nor books.

I've been in Hell-A since Sunday, meeting and greeting potential cast for 'VA5' (God, we've got to announce the real title soon; I always feel like I'm shilling for Alberto hair-care products when I say 'VA5'). That's right - aside from the usual gang of idiots, there will be some new faces in the picture. I've met all manner of actors you're familiar with from other flicks, and a few cats you've probably never heard of yet. Don't ask for names; I'm not saying shit until we lock the whole cast.

Yesterday, we recorded the commentary tracks for the 'Clerks' Cartoon DVD. Jeff, Brian, Mewes, Mandel, Bailey, Scooter, and I took our places behind the microphones and cracked jokes, told stories, and basically didn't bitch as much as I thought we would. It's all water under the bridge at this point, and we were all more interested in trading inside info on the making of than dishing further on the Alphabet net (though there's some of that in the mix too). And the Miramax cats putting together the DVD are doing a phenomenal job (props to Shannon and Lydia), packing it with tons of extras and goodies (including Jay and Bob intros to each episode that me and Mewes shoot next week). It's shaping up to be another View Askew DVD that can't be missed.

Just like that 'Dogma' Special Edition DVD. Fuck, are they making a keeper with that. Mike Stratford, Frank Rodriguez, and Gretchen at Col/Tristar (and our own Vincent Pereira in the home office) have put together an incredible piece of Askeworibilia you can't live without (alright - you COULD; but why would you want to, really?). Wait'll you see the sweet-ass packaging and the menus. They're true Askew.

That's about it for now. I know it may seem a little slow around here (though with Lee lighting the board on fire, how can it, really? Fuck if my man doesn't POST his heart out, God bless him), but don't be deceived. It's just the calm before the storm. Soon, there'll be all manner of 'VA5' news clogging this site, and other eyebrow-raising revelations (like I'm gay; but then, who didn't know that already), such as this one...

      Because you demanded it!

We broke down and built you a box set. That's right - now you've got something to stick your Jersey Trilogy DVD's in, regardless of what distributor put out which flick. It should be up in the next few weeks, and I think you're gonna be impressed when you see it. Sweet-ass art and a well-designed layout of same, all slapped on a sturdy-ass box that'll look so good on your shelf, you just might finally get laid. I'll let you know when they're coming, but it should be just in time for Christmas.

Short of that, there's not much else to say. Remember - Friday, October 13th. Hit the site often and much (or at least once a week on Friday). I'm signed on for half a year, but who knows? If the feedback's good, maybe I'll become a permanent fixture on PsyComic.

Kev's right, Jason Lee DID post a TON over at the View Askew WWWBoard, too much for us to even summarize here. So, if you want to learn what the guy had to say, we urge you to surf on over there and read. As for PsyComic, it's a great match and a wonderful medium for Kev to be writing for. We're eagerly anticipating the results. Damn, there's a ton going on! Glad to see that View Askew Productions has so much on the plate. It's going to be a very exciting Fall/Winter season.
