Remember though, some post often and some hardly at all. A good idea is to wait until someone shows up, otherwise you’ll be posting questions to Brian O’Halloran and he will NOT see them.
So should I post questions for Ben Affleck here then?
No, not really. Ben used to post here quite a bit, but ever since he opened his own web site he hasn’t been around. You can head over to www.affleck.com if you want to post a message to him.
Do any of the other actors from Kevin’s movies ever post here?
There have been instances where other people have posted on the web site, but those are so few and far between that they are hardly worth mentioning. Some other people who have at one time or another posted here include:
Ben Affleck used to post here quite frequently, but does not post here anymore since he got his own web board. Matt Damon, Chris Rock and Linda Fiorentino all posted during the making of Dogma, but have not been back since. Linda did tell Kevin that she sometimes comes and just reads the board though. Jason and Carmen Lee used to come on with Malcolm in the beginning and later they posted on their own a few times. Scott Mosier and Dave Klein both posted once or twice in the beginning, but have not posted in a long time. Jeff Anderson (Randal) posted once at the very beginning to defend himself. He posted under the name "Mr. Spoonauer." Other notable visitors have included Joe (Daredevil) Quesada and Cameron (Jerru Maguire) Crowe.
Why can’t I ask for a job or send Kevin a script?
Because neither will endear you to anyone. Besides that, View Askew does not offer jobs or internships over the Web Board. As for scripts, it is a legal reason why Kevin and crew will not read them. If you send it in, they will NOT read it. Even if you just want them to look it over to see if they like it, they can’t.
Why are people so mean to each other here? Especially to the new people.
The general feeling here is that you need a thick skin to hang around. It’s not so much that people are mean to each other, it’s just than people do not throw open their arms to everyone who comes here. The new people (newbies) usually get derided more than others because they tend to be the ones who don’t know the dynamics of the board, don’t take the time to see how the board works and then complain the most when people flame them.
What does *NT* mean?
It means "no text," as in there is no text enclosed within. The only text in this message is what you see on the subject line.
What does *repost* mean?
A "repost" is a post that did not get answered on the board before, so someone "re-posted" it on the new board. It is usually labeled repost so that people who read it on the board before do not read it again. The general rule of thumb is that you are allowed to repost once per board.
What is "firsties"?
"Firsties" is a sort of game that is played whenever the board turns over. Whoever posts the first message after Ming or HolyToads announce "newboard" posts a message with firsties in the subject line. In other words, they were the first to post on the new board.
Do you win anything for getting "firsties?"
How long has this web board been in operation?
The Web Board was put into operation in the Summer of 1996, so you do the math.
Are there really people besides Kevin who have been around the entire time?
There sure are. Some people have been here since almost day one, while others have filtered in over the years.
Who or what are the "riders?" And what is the "rider board?"
The "riders" was a nickname for a group of people who were on the web board in the very beginning of things. They used to go back into old boards and chat with each other. When it was realized that this was a huge strain on the system, a rider web board was put up. It became a place where some people went to have off-topic conversations. After awhile there was a big controversy at the alleged exclusionary actions of the riders in terms of who they invited to their board. The board has since been shut down.
How come I can’t use the "last board" link to go all the way back to the very first board?
Those boards have long since been erased, although some people supposedly saved parts of them. The board has gone through some significant changes over the years, the most serious being the registration system that was implemented after a rash of "spam" posts (somewhere around July of 1998). Before that you did not have to register your name.
How do I get Kevin’s e-mail address? I have something private to discuss with him that I don’t want to post on the Web Board.
You don’t get it. The general rule around here is that if you want to "talk" to Kevin about something, post it on the board. It’s a pretty open forum and Kevin has stated that anything you want to say can be put forth for others to read.
What exactly is the "other board?" Why would I want to post there if Kevin won’t answer my questions?
The other board is basically a way for Kevin and the Askew crew to keep too much "chatting" from going on at the main board. Anyone who wants to post something like "Hey everyone, what’s your favorite scene in Mallrats?" should post it at the other board because the main board is meant for factual questions for Kevin and the Askew folks.
What many people find is that they really enjoy talking to other people about Kevin’s flicks or just about anything. The other board serves that purpose. There are people who only go to the main board, people who only go to the other board, and people who go to both. It’s about finding your niche.
But Kevin won’t answer any questions over on the other board, right?
That is correct.
I went to the other board, but there wasn’t any discussion about how to break into the business or about films in general. Where should I go?
A great place to talk about the process of making films is www.film411.com, which is run by some of the folks who operate this board and are knowledgeable about such things.
I posted a message here last night and it disappeared. What happened?
Well, probably one of two things.
1)The board may have turned over. Take a look at the time the board changed and see if your post was before that. If so, simply repost your message with the phrase "repost" in the subject line along with your subject.
2)The other reason your post may have disappeared is that Ming or Holytoads erased it because it was off-topic or inappropriate. Only the people in charge (Ming, Toads, Kevin) have the power to delete posts.
