What is the current status of all the View Askew flicks in terms of being released on VHS and DVD?
Right now you can get all of the Askew flicks on VHS and/or DVD except Dogma, which hit the streets in DVD on May 2, 2000, but was not priced to sell-through for VHS. Here’s the current breakdown right now:
Clerks – Available on DVD and VHS. DVD is part of the Miramax collectors series and include extras like audio commentary by Kevin, cast and crew; deleted scenes; alternate ending; theatrical trailer; and the Soul Asylum video for "Can’t Even Tell."
It retails for somewhere between $30 and $40, but is available signed by Kevin at the Secret Stash.
Mallrats – Mallrats is also available on both VHS and DVD. The DVD is a Universal release and includes an enormous amount of extras including: Commentary track with Kevin, Affleck, Jason Mewes, Jason Lee, Scott Mosier and Vincent Pereira; Over one hour of deleted scenes; live footage in the commentary track; a 45 minute production featurette; theatrical trailer; production photos; and the Goops video (directed by Kevin) for the song "Build Me Up Buttercup."
The Mallrats DVD retails for around $30.
Chasing Amy – Chasing Amy is currently only available in VHS format. The DVD is currently slated to arrive in stores in June. It will basically be a copy of the Amy laserdisc, which will include cut scenes, theatrical trailer, and commentary with Kevin, Affleck, Jason Mewes and Scott Mosier.
Dogma – Dogma is currently available for rental on VHS (it has not been given sell-through price status yet) or DVD. The release date for the striped down version of the DVD was May 2, 2000. There are also plans for a huge special edition of Dogma with a tentative release date of October. The DVD will include almost 100 minutes of cut scenes, commentary, and other great things.
My friend said he bought a VHS tape with all the extras that would normally be included on a laser disc and/or DVD. Is that possible?
Is it possible? Yes. Is it legal? No. Basically, some dealers at comic conventions and such will tape the laserdisc and then sell it to people who otherwise would not have access to the extra material. The folks at View Askew know it happens, but attempting to stop it would be very difficult if not impossible. Besides, as Kevin has stated before, he was once one of those people buying things like this. It doesn’t mean he supports it, he’s just aware of it.
What about the tapes I see on Ebay like the Sundance cut of Clerks and the Mallrats dailies tapes. Same thing?
Same thing.
