I have heard the View Askew has produced several other movies besides the New Jersey trilogy and Dogma. Is that true? What are they?
Yes it is true that View askew has had a hand in several other films. The movies A Better Place, Big Helium Dog, and Vulgar were all produced under the View Askew banner as a result of an agreement between Miramax and View Askew. Other films such as Good Will Hunting and Tail Lights Fade were made by alumnus of View Askew, but without the official Askew banner.
What is "A Better Place"?
That would be Vincent Pereira's film, involving a guy moving to a new town after his father dies in an accident. (You know it's much more than that, but we aren't telling anymore. Needless to say, we saw it, it's great. It's not a comedy, though.) Check out the official page HERE.
Does it tie into the existing View Askewniverse?
Yes. Lee Bendick reprises his role as Wynarski (and Jason Lee, Carmen Lee, Scott Mosier, Ethan Suplee, and some others from other Askew films have roles, but none return as characters they have previously portrayed).
What were A Better Place’s alternate titles?
The Happy World of Bunnies (after a line from the film) and Total Peace.
Where can I see "A Better Place" and/or "Drawing Flies"?
Both of these films were shown at the Vulgarthon and if there is a second one as planned, there is a good bet they may be shown again. A Better Place will be on video and DVD soon. Currently Vincent is working on the sound mix and the transfer. The future of Drawing Flies is a little more cloudy. Malcolm has stated on the board that he’s just as soon see the flick die, but a ground swell of interest on the board may have swayed him to find a way to get it to the fans. He’s currently looking at several options, including a limited production run under the auspices of the View Askew banner.
What's the skinny on Bryan Johnson’s film, Vulgar?
It's about a clown, played by Brian O'Halloran, who is raped. It is currently in the can and going through the lengthy editing process. A trailer for the film made an appearance at the Stash Bash.
What's the story with "Good Will Hunting"?
Ben "Holden McNeil and Shannon Hamilton" Affleck wrote a script with Matt "Second Executive" Damon a while ago. They spent some time polishing it, and kept trying to sell it. [Rumor has it that, among others, William Goldman and Terrence Malick gave them little pointers at various stages as well.] They eventually sold it to Castle Rock, but it got shelved and then, even worse, was given a director whose experience was directing "Rookie of the Year". Out of frustration, Ben showed the script to Kevin & Scott. They took it to Harvey Weinstein, head of Miramax, who bought it up and made it a big production. They got Gus "Not View Askew related" Van Sant to direct it and Robin "Now I've Got an Oscar, but I'm Still Mork" Williams to play a major role. It is, as of this writing, the most popular movie (monetarily) in Miramax history. Oh, and the script won some sort of Ozcer or something.
What is "Tail Lights Fade"?
Malcolm Ingram's and Matt Gissing's second film. Tanya Allen, Elizabeth Berkley, Jake Busey, Margot Kidder, Breckin Meyer, Denise Richards, and someone from "Degrassi Jr. High" are in the cast. It was funded primarily by the Canadian government (about $2 million or so. ) The film follows two couples as they race across Canada to help a jailed friend by emptying his warehouse full of pot before the cops find it.
What is "Big Helium Dog"?
Big Helium Dog is a comedy written and directed by Brian Lynch (seen briefly in Chasing Amy, on the panel ... you can tell it's him 'cause he's not a minority of any kind). Kinda sketch-ish, but quite funny based on the script. Kevin and Scott exec produced and appear; Vincent Pereira (who directed Brian in "A Better Place") also has a prominent role, associate produced, and co-edited the film.
What’s this I read about Brian Lynch writing a Muppet script? Is it true?
Yes it is. The nebbish writer wrote a spec script that was picked up and loved by the Henson company. The original plan was for it to come after the next movie, but plans may have fallen through since then. Keep an eye on News Askew and the web board for updates.
Is it true Brian Lynch will be directing a movie?
The last word was that he would indeed be directing his own script dealing with zombies and fraternities. Keep an eye out on the web board and News Askew for more information.
What is "Autograph"?
Autograph is Vincent Pereira’s second script, which he is currently putting the finishing touches on. Production should start once the script is completed.
