can i submit my script to kevin?
No. There are legal problems with it. Don't ask.
where did they get "view askew" from?
Kev put it together in '92, 'cause it rhymed and seemed an accurate description of the sensibility. But it's not really his license plate.
why were both clerks and 'rats filmed at 1.85:1, as opposed to, say, 2.35:1?
In his opinion, he hasn't made a film that would be well-served in wide screen. Dogma is in 2.35, though.
Note also: Clerks and Rats were actually filmed in 1.66 and blown up to 1.85, I believe.
what happened to kevin when he was on politically incorrect?
Straight from the horses mouth: "You try sitting next to Morley Safer and getting a word in about social issues. That, plus they threw in the Gen X question, which sucked."
how necessary is it to be in the writer's guild?
To work for a major studio, you must be in the Guild.
how do you get in to the writer's guild?
Actually, the easy way is to have a studio buy something, or ask for something, written by you. Kevin didn't join until Mallrats was written, and he would quit now if he could still work for major studios as and independent writer.
what agency represents the va people?
It used to be CAA [Creative Artists Agency], but he found them too eccentric and recently switched to Endeavor (who got him the Superman writing gig).
who gets to choose what songs go on the soundtracks?
It's basically Kevin's call, although that may not be what you see on the album credits.
what's the deal with distribution in florida?
From Kev: Distributors say Florida is bad news because of all the senior citizens. Besides the age factor, they often only go to $2.00 houses, which aren't worth it to the distributor.
what was "happy trails"?
Shortly after the boards started, Kevin had a get together in Red Bank. It lasted two days, a Friday and a Saturday late in August. The whole thing was a benefit for Red Bank's Count Basie Theatre. The gimmick was that the "movie" he showed was entirely complied of trailers (the coming attractions shown before movies). The trailers were a healthy mix of good movies, cult classics, '80's movies, and other stuff that he could find in the vintages shops in California (he bought everything except what he felt was true crap). And, of course, Clerks and Mallrats [one each night].
any chance of a "happy trails" on the west coast?
It was just a benefit for a local theatre, so it's doubtful.
will there be any view askew stuff at planet hollywood?
The NC-17 certificate for Clerks was donated, and the toy truck from Mallrats is in San Diego Planet Hollywood.
I saw at the end of the one of Mallrats that the company's name used to be Too Askew not View Askew... is this true and if so what made the change???
Vincent Periera : "Each film has a company created just to produce that particular film for legal reasons. MALLRATS was Unstable Molecules, CHASING AMY was Too Askew, DOGMA was Plenary Indulgence, A BETTER PLACE was Providence Films, DRAWING FLIES was Good Load Inc., VULGAR was Shongo Filmworks, and BIG HELIUM DOG was Ray Is Dead Co."
