Normally, we'll do a full length wrapup of Vulgarthon's events, as we do with a lot of our View Askew trips, but we figured this time we'd try instead just giving a brief summary of what might be of interest to those of you who couldn't be in attendance. After an incredibly treacherous trip in (through about a foot of snow, still falling through central PA), the trip, which normally takes about 3 hours, took around 5, so we weren't able to check into the Holiday Inn until midnight on Sunday. Therefore, there was just time to have a quick few drinks and some sack time for the busy day ahead. We noticed Ming, Vincent, and a large crew watching movies in a conference room (dubbed "Harley's"), and ran into a few folks that recalled us from last year. Sorry we missed chatting with so many of you, though, it was just a hectic trip.

Onto Monday...

It's a cold day in Jersey on Monday morning, and the line outside of the theater is shorter than most years, likely due to the fact that things are starting an hour earlier than usual, and most folks just couldn't get out of bed on time. After a quick stop at the Stash to greet Vincent at the ticket table, we're on our way. Malcolm greets us at the door, and we're able to snag our seats early. This year, Kevin arrives at the theater's front doors as they start to let the crowd in, personally greeting all the attendees and allowing photo opportunities as the day begins. A very cool move. As we settle into our seats just inside the front doors of theater one, Don May Jr. comes in (he of the "A Better Place" DVD creation fame, he runs Synapse) who's always a lot of fun to chat with.

Time goes on, and for the hour from 9 to 10 AM, folks trickle in with soda, popcorn, and befuddled looks as they try to find seats in the quickly-filling theater. Before we know it, it's time for the festivites to start! We all agree that we're ALREADY hungry. Note to self - Eat breakfast next year.

Here's our summary of what we watched and what we learned in the Q&A sessions afterwards:

    INTRO (10:00 AM)

Directors and stars in attendance this year were: Kevin Smith ("Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back"), Bryan Johnson ("Vulgar"), Brian O'Halloran ("Vulgar" star), Jeff Anderson ("Now You Know") & Brian Lynch ("Big Helium Dog").

    PROGRAM - VULGAR (10:30 AM)

    VULGAR Q&A - BRYAN JOHNSON & BRIAN O'HALLORAN (12:00 PM)

    • Vulgar will be released in early Spring now, likely, due to a remix at Skywalker.

    • Vulgar will be released unrated in theaters, a small run, and will be on VHS and DVD by the end of the year (An R-rated cut has also been done for Blockbuster).

    • Bryan Johnson will be working on a horror flick with Malcolm Ingram this Spring. They plan to film in New Jersey.

    • O'Halloran - "Drop Dead Roses" - Festival Circuit in Canada, released here possibly Fall 2002.

    • Walt Flanagan was in attendance to explain the origins of the "Vulgar" logo (from the start of Clerks) that was the inspiration for the character in the film. He originally drew a clown with a chain saw for a band's t-shirt design. When he sent the logo to Kevin (then in film school), Kevin asked to use it for View Askew.

After this Q&A, Vincent came in with a tape sent specically sent to Vulgarthon from none other than Jason Lee. Lee used a digital video camera to film himself, make some jokes, talk about how COLD it was in Vancouver, make some Burt Reynolds and Jason Mewes references, and wish us all well. The tape was hilarious, even though Lee really had no set agenda or direction. The guy's just damn funny. Hopefully he can make the next event in person again. It was obvious that if there was any way he could have made it to Red Bank, he'd have come in. Great guy.

PROGRAM - JAY & SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK FEATURE, CUT FOOTAGE & GAG REEL (12:30 PM)

Having not watched "Jay & Bob" in a couple of months, it's great to watch it again. The jokes are still very funny even after all of the repeated viewings. As always, the theater one audience is a great group of folks to watch a View Askew flick with. Lots of fun.

Kevin appears at the end of the flick, after the film stops abruptly during the credits due to projection problems (some members of the crowd take to singing "Because I Got High" anyway) and, as soon as Kevin appears to start chatting up front, the film starts up again, stopping Kev short and causing him to wait out the rest of the credits. Afterwards, the audience decides they'd like to see the deleted scenes and gag reel before starting with the Q&A. Here's a summary (taken from our feature story on this the other day) on all the way cool deleted stuff we saw:

      DELETED SCENES

    • An extended scene with the 2 youths outside of the Quick Stop, helping Jay & Silent Bob get busted.

    • An extended version of the Brodie's Secret Stash scene with more dialogue and Brodie's interaction with Brian Lynch.

    • As with the Dogma DVD, Kevin demonstrates what happens when Affleck is given the chance to ad-lib.

    • A series of gags regarding sex with donkeys, starting with a website that Holden shows to Jay & Silent Bob at Potzers, Inc. The website's URL was actually registered, thus, the gag and all subsequent references to it had to go.

    • An extended bit following Sean William Scott's booting from the van and a CGI-created sheep.

    • An alternate, filthier take on the Scooby Doo sequence where it's revealed that Scoob shares a feature with Walt Flanagan's dog.

    • A hilarious extended scene where Jay & Silent Bob board the bus from Jersey to California, featuring the "Kid in the Helmet", immortalized in the Clerks cartoon series.

    • Two quick gags where Dante and Randal reference the cancelled ABC Clerks cartoon.

    • A short scene of the girls beginning to change into their leather suits in the van.

    • A scene featuring Jen using her famous "Shine" expression (revealed by Kevin in his New York Times comic last year).

    • Several scenes featuring a VERY close relationship between Chrissy (Ali Larter) and Missy (Jennifer Schwalbach Smith).

    • Marshall Willenholly's introduction scene (in a bathroom stall with some colorful reading material).

    • More of Sissy with the Pizza man (Joe Quesada).

    • Adam Corolla's deleted scene (as an FBI agent who mocks Willenholly on an incoming phone call).

    • A shot of Sissy dumping the diamonds from their hideout's balcony onto Justice's head (Kev says: "A pretty shot, but why would she dump the diamonds?")

    • Futher dialogue between Hooper and Banky outside of the Bluntman & Chronic premiere.

    • An appearance of Scott Mosier's famous Chasing Amy character outside the Bluntman & Chronic premiere.

      OUTTAKES

    • Mewes takes a few stabs at his second chant, outside the second convenience store.

    • Will Ferrell ad-libs regarding the lack of a police jet as he dials his cellular phone, in several takes. Kevin admitted this scene was his presonal favorite of the cut stuff, since he was such a fan of Will's work.

    • Affleck & Damon crack up repeatedly at the "I don't like the sound of them apples, Will" line.

    • An over 5 minute long scene Kevin crafted in the editing room featuring newscaster John Stewart and wildlife marshall Will Ferrel ad-libbing and discussing the C.L.I.T.

    • Jason Lee mocks Jay's way of speaking (as Brodie).

    • Judd Nelson's different line reads on what he and his deputies plan to do when they get back to the stationhouse.

    JAY & BOB Q&A - KEVIN SMITH (3:40 PM)

    • Jersey Girl - Affleck and Carlin are 100% cast at this point, no one else is a definite though.

    • Jersey Girl - The film is still on schedule to start filming this Spring, in Highlands, New Jersey and 15-20% in New York. Filming starts this July (delayed due to Affleck's Daredevil commitment).

    • Neve Campbell was the original Shannen Doherty part in Jay & Bob.

    • Fletch will follow "Jersey Girl" film-wise, and Kevin will NOT make it without Jason Lee in the lead role.

    • The Clerks cartoon film will be written by Kevin and Dave Mandel this Winter, following Jersey Girl.

Following this flick, it's time for our lunch/dinner break around 4:10 PM, marking the halfway point of the day. By this point, the snowstorm, while now much calmer, has followed us into Jersey. Fearing the worst on the roads again, we decide we'll head back to the theater for one more flick, then head out early to make sure we're home in time for work on Tuesday.

After dinner, we come back to find things fairly calm at the theater. As Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson return, they take the time to stand in the lobby to meet and greet the fans, take photos, and sign stuff. There's a chance to say hi to Jeff and Brian, as well as snap a few photos (though Jeff's came out a bit blurred when it was suggested he just "be natural" and he started mugging for the camera).

This was also the perfect time to check out the Stash and grab a couple photos of the Bluntmobile, the ticket table, and those sweet Dogma sculptures on the front counter. Check those photos out above.

Kevin shows up to organize the crowd and introduce Jeff Anderson, making his first appearance at Vulgarthon! It's great to see Jeff in Jersey, and he fits in perfectly, chatting with fans and acting very laid-back all around, even though his flick's being seen in front of a public audience for the first time! That movie, "Now You Know", is being screened for us before most of the flick's cast and crew, and is still in rough form. Jeff tells us that the flick's got a few sound and editing problems so far, and also warns us of a tape switch in the middle (It's a BETA copy, but really looks great onscreen).

PROGRAM - NOW YOU KNOW (WORK IN PROGRESS) (6:15 PM)

Jeff described "Now You Know" as a romantic comedy. The flick was a really great surprise, as for Anderson's writing and directorial debut, it's quite good! Jeff had the film financed independently, which he explained meant that they can now seek distribution anywhere, and we're sure he'll find it. The flick's an ensemble piece, starring Anderson and a crew of very recognizable TV actors and actresses, Jeremy Sisto ("Six Feet Under"), Heather Paige Kent ("That's Life") and Rashida Jones ("Boston Public"). The crowd's favorite and easily the film's greatest discovery is Trevor Fehrman in the role of "Biscuit". The crowd was totally behind this guy. Great stuff. The film's got some very memorable gags, which we won't spoil here, but that include Kent's character's relationship with Jones' little brother, a fun exchange between Sisto's character (Jeremy) and a woman in a bar, some fun stuff at the start with Kevin Smith and wife Jennifer, and lots more. Both fans of View Askew and non-fans alike will enjoy the flick. Be sure and seek it out, whether it goes theatrically, to video, or to HBO or the like. We'll be chatting with Anderson more about this flick's progress and distribution as time goes on. Trust us, you want to see it!

NOW YOU KNOW Q&A - JEFF ANDERSON (7:30 PM)

Following the film's conclusion, theater one erupted into thunderous applause, and Jeff Anderson came to the front of the room to take questions on the film for about a half an hour. The audience had some critiques, but as a whole enjoyed the film and the performances a great deal. Jeff explained that they filmed the movie back in May for around 18 days, before the big Hollywood strike was set to happen, and that he had no problem finding some great actors for the roles. Jeff was kind to the audience and fielded questions ranging from his acting, future projects (to which he said he'd wait and see how this one worked out), the music in the film, the budget (which he said was incredibly low), and lots more. It was great seeing Jeff run his Q&A, let's hope he comes back with a new film next year, or even just for the final version of this one. One of the clear highlights of the evening.

Due to the nasty weather following us into New Jersey, we opted to hit the road a bit early, as there were day jobs to get back to on Tuesday and we had to miss the final film of the night, the only encore from last year's Vulgarthon - Brian Lynch's "Big Helium Dog". Lynch also had a big announcement to make regarding another of his projects, which we'll have full coverage of very soon.

As always, it's impossible to cover an event of this size on our own, so we're inviting everyone to send in their summaries, anecdotes, photos, and anything else relating to your Vulgarthon experiences. Due to the hectic schedule and the bad weather, we were unable to check in from the field, but now that we're back, we'll catch up on anything else that we might have missed. Let's hope for better weather at the next one, and we hope to see ya there -- Don't forget to stop up and say hello! It was great chatting with the few of you that stopped by.

Thanks again to Kevin, Vincent, Jeff, Bryan, Brian, Ming, Len, and ALL of the great folks that took part in making this the smoothest Vulgarthon yet! We'll look forward to the next one.
