  • There’s so many stories surrounding the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back DVD today, we figured we’d give them their own category. First off, the disc’s release received a quick TV mention yesterday on Access Hollywood. Oh, but there’s lots more.
  • Wizard World ran a great piece on the flick’s DVD release. Their coverage was fantastic during production, and continues to be excellent. Here’s the story:
KEVIN SMITH STRIKES BACK

‘Jay and Silent Bob’ DVD hits with extra hour

Sometimes, an hour-and-a-half just ain’t enuff.

Such is definitely the case with “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” the most recent comedy from writer/director Kevin Smith. Smith gets a chance to add to last year’s Internet-and-movie farce with today’s release of “JSBSB” on DVD and home video. The 2-disc set from Dimension Home Video is chock full of goodness.

“There’s a slew of stuff, including over an hour of cut footage with intros to each sequence, a commentary track, gag reels, behind-the-scenes featurettes, storyboards, a nifty guide to the comic book appearances of Jay and Silent Bob, and a stills gallery,” Smith said. Music videos, including Afroman’s “I Got High” and Stroke 9’s “Kick Some Ass,” are also included, as are TV spots, Internet trailers, and the Comedy Central “Reel Comedy” special on the movie.

And if ya don’t like what Smith has to say on his commentary track, well…say it yourself. “On the DVD-ROM side, there’s this feature where you can create your own commentary track over the ‘net that’s pretty nifty,” he said.

Of particular note to comic fans is the “pizza delivery boy” scene featuring Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada. The scene was cut to mere seconds in the theatrical release, but goes on for several minutes on the extended DVD. “He turned in what could be termed a very ‘hard’ performance,” Smith said. “You’re going to see Joe Q as only [his wife] Nanci Q has seen him before.”

And Smith, who’s usually fairly critical of his own work, decided he liked the movie in retrospect while compiling the DVD features. “As I went through all the cut stuff, I really fell in love with the flick again,” he said. “It was a load of fun to shoot, and it turned a profit for Miramax. In a perfect world, that’s all you can hope for.” -Jim McLauchlin
