JERSEY GIRL TEST SCREENING – LOS ANGELES, LA May 18-21, 2003 Whenever we’ve got a chance to hop on a plane and leave the very unexciting Pennsylvania, we jump at the chance! So, when Kevin asked us if we’d like to attend one of the final “Jersey Girl”¯ test screenings on the west coast, we couldn’t wait. Not only was it an opportunity to see the film projected on the big screen almost a full year before release, but also an excuse to take a few days off from work, meet some west coast friends, and check out some sights. |
WIZARD WORLD EAST – PHILADELPHIA, PA May 10-12, 2002 Wizard held their first ever comic convention on the east coast in the Spring of 2002, and Kevin was easily their most popular guest. Folks lined up for tickets once they got inside, just to get a chance for a few autographs from Kevin, then got right back in line for tickets for his sold out¯ Q&A session on Saturday. We were there to snap some exclusive photos and break some very interesting news. |
VULGARTHON 2K2 – RED BANK, NJ January 7-8, 2002 By far the most dangerous of all our trips so far, News Askew travels through over a foot of snow on the highways of Pennsylvania in the middle of a blizzard to attend Vulgarthon 3! The drive proves to be well worth it, as we’re treated to 3 films for the first time at any Vulgarthon (including 2 US premieres) and another fan classic. VULGARTHON 2000 – RED BANK, NJ October 30, 2000 Kevin Smith. Jason Lee. Vincent Pereira. Bryan Lynch. Malcolm Ingram. Brian O’Halloran. Jason Mewes. What do all these names have in common? They were all there with us at View Askew’s Vulgarthon 2000 to present the films in which they starred, directed and, quite often, both! For 14 hours over 400 fans came from around the globe to watch Dogma: Cannes Edition, Drawing Flies, A Better Place, Big Helium Dog, and 4 never before seen episodes of the Clerks cartoon, take pictures and nab autographs from their favorite stars, and ask all the questions that everyone else was afraid to (as well as some we’ve heard a million times before). We were at the event from start to finish and have your full coverage exclusively right here. |
DOGMA BOARD PREMIERE/BENEFIT – RED BANK, NJ October 25, 1999 One of the more low key and quiet events was this limited-ticket charity event in October of 1999. Lucky callers who got through were given the chance to purchase tickets to be among the first to see Dogma at a special screening held in Red Bank, with Kevin, Scott, and some other key members present. The film was shown on one screen with a brief introduction from Kevin. We were on hand to check out the festivities. |
NEW YORK CITY DOGMA PREMIERE / PARTY – NEW YORK, NY October 4, 1999 It will be a day long remembered. Read about our trip to New York City for the official Dogma premiere and post party, where we shared the room with such celebs and bigwigs as Ben Affleck, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Harvey Weinstein, and, of course, Kevin Smith. Talk about a real Cinderella story for a couple of lowly webmasters from Central Pennsylvania! |
DOGMA AT THE TORONTO FILM FESTIVAL – TORONTO, ON September 11, 1999 It was the hottest ticket at the festival, and thanks to Kevin & Lion’s Gate, we had a ticket in. Read about Brad’s day in lovely Toronto and the frenzy that surrounded the Uptown theater, where Dogma made its North American premiere. This also marked our first look at the final, finished film, as it would be released theatrically (after seeing a workprint of the film over a year ago in the View Askew offices). |
KEVIN SPEAKS AT RIDER UNIVERSITY – LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ April 8, 1999 It had been over a year since we’d seen Kevin speak to an audience, so we thought we’d take a drive in to see what new tales he had to tell. The audience came up with some nice questions, and we heard some old favorites along with new tales about the filming and controversy of Dogma. |
STASH BASH / RED BANK TOUR – RED BANK, NJ March 6, 1999 When Kevin opened the new and improved Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash in Red Bank, he wanted the die-hard fans to get a look inside before anyone else. And so, in addition to inviting special guests Joe Quesada, Jimmy Palmiotti, & Amanda Conner from Event Comics, he allowed fans to have the run of the shop (as well as uncovered some actual props from Dogma). Attendees were also treated to a tour of famous area locations from the films, hosted by Brian O’Halloran or Jay Mewes. Fans got to check out Quick Stop, RST, the Amy swings, and more. |
PITTSBURGH COMIC CONVENTION – PITTSBURGH, PA April 26, 1998 Kevin got together with the Oni Press gang to promote the new comics he’d been working on (Clerks, Jay & Silent Bob) with a Q&A session and a signing gig at the annual Pittsburgh Comic Convention. With only a 3 hour drive to the con, we figured it’d be a mistake to miss it. Kevin ends up being by far the most popular guest at the event. We were there for the Q&A and to witness the massive line of autograph seekers that came to meet the man. |
BRAD & CHRIS HIT THE DOGMA SET – PITTSBURGH, PA April 22, 1998 Probably the greatest in our on location¯ series is our extremely long day spent on the set of Dogma. Over the course of a day, we lived the life of a movie extra, learned that a lot of movie-making is just sitting around and waiting, and even got to shake hands and chat with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, & Gwyneth Paltrow. Kevin even gave us some screentime in the flick. |
VULGARTHON 1998 – RED BANK, NJ January 5, 1998 It soon became the event that those who attended would forever discuss, and those who missed would forever lament. In January of 1998, Kevin & a bunch of friends (including Jason Lee, Brian O’Halloan, Jay Mewes, and lots more) rented out a Red Bank theater for an entire day and entertained an enormous crowd with 5 flicks, complete with Q&A sessions: Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy were shown along with our first look at View Askew Productions “A Better Place”¯ and “Drawing Flies”¯. |
KEVIN SPEAKS AT RUTGERS UNIVERSITY – CAMDEN, NJ September 24, 1997 When we heard that Kevin was making a public appearance at Rutgers University to screen Chasing Amy and answer questions for the audience, we could resist making the trip in. What we didn’t realize was that this would be one of the first in a long string of famous Q&A sessions that Kevin hosts at colleges around the country. Read about the first time Kev told public stories about meeting Jay, the Superman script, and lots more. |
BRAD & CHRIS VISIT THE “BIG HELIUM DOG” SET – LEONARDO, NJ September 7, 1997 View Askew cohorts Brian Lynch & Vincent Pereira were shooting a movie called “Big Helium Dog”, and thought we’d like to drop by the set for a day of shooting, on location at Pereira’s home. Over the course of the day, we saw a movie being made for the first time, got to take a crack in FRONT of the camera, and met Kevin Smith (also for the first time). |
