11.22.99 - DOGMA'S WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (WEEK 2)...

(As Seen On News Askew)

  • Well, here's the top 10 flicks at the box office for this past weekend. As you can see, Dogma took in a respectable 4.1 million amongst a crowd of big moneymakers this weekend. Though it was 5th place, if ya check the per-screen averages, it did quite well yet again. The flick is now officially the highest grossing View Askew film (so far!), and looks to also be a nice money-maker for Lions Gate, so congrats all around. Here's the top 10 (With thanks to Yahoo, Dark Horizons, and GunnLace.Com):

Lions Gate pres. Tom also added:

"Obviously, everybody got shellacked this weekend. We don't get to play against two $30 million openings all the time," Lions Gate Co-President Tom Ortenberg said Sunday morning. "We're still well positioned for Thanksgiving. We're still the No. 1 comedy in America, which I think is important heading into a big holiday like Thanksgiving. It's still the only comedy in the Top Five.

"The film is playing best to younger audiences, both males and females, probably 18 to 34. They like the comedy. They like the hipness. Even though the film, itself, would seem to play a little more male than female, females are still strongly being attracted by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. We think we're still very well positioned for a great five-day Thanksgiving weekend. The film will play itself out through December."

    And the report:

Taking the fifth spot this weekend is director Kevin Smith's religious satire "Dogma". The film did suffer a larger than expected 52% decline but it still ended up passing the $12 million haul of Smith's last film "Chasing Amy" to become the biggest hit in the director's career. "Dogma" has so far earned close to $16 million and should top out in the area of $25 million giving distributor Lions Gate a profitable hit. Smith will next helm a sequel to his breakout film "Clerks".

11.22.99 - NEWS ASKEW PRESENTS: THE DOGMA DRINKING GAME!

    (As Seen On News Askew)

    Click For The Game!
  • Well, folks, here it is. Our first NEW game since the start of this site. Many of you may not realize this, but when this website (then called "Drinks Askew") first came along it was actually designed to JUST house the drinking games for the Jersey Trilogy that we'd created, and that was it. Little did we know what we'd gotten ourselves into! Heh Heh.

Those three games are still online as a part of our much larger News Askew mega-site now, and in addition to those (yes, the original Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy drinking games pages are still there!) we've got Dogma RC, Files Askew, Comics Askew, the Summaries, tons of trip summaries, an extensive news archive, and lots more. Whew.

So, we decided that we had a lot to live up to when we created the Dogma drinking game. Lots of questions were asked, and we ran the flick through our heads many times. Keep in mind, by the way, this game is totally untested, since we haven't got a copy of the flick ourselves (and our local theater owners frown upon carrying cases of cold beer in, go figure). So, as always, PLAY AT YOUR OWN RISK. As soon as we get a copy at home, we'll run through the game ourselves, test it out, and give you an idea of the average amount of drinks consumed, as we've always done in the past. At that point the game may receive some tweaking to make it more enjoyable.

Again, we realize the rules of the game don't even scratch the surface of all that happens, after all, this is the longest and most ambitious View Askew production to date. We hope that you have a good time when you eventually get the chance to give it a try and, as always, drink responsibly. Enjoy the Dogma Drinking Game!

    11.20.99 - DOGMA QUICKIES

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Kevin Smith & Chris Rock filmed an episode of The Charlie Rose Show yesterday. For the unfamiliar, The Charlie Rose Show is a very intelligent one-on-one talk show that airs on PBS affiliates. We're not sure of an airdate just yet, but it's most likely sometime next week. Keep checking http://www.pbs.org/charlierose to see when they update the air schedules. Rumor has it that Kev's Charlie Rose interview was so good that it'll appear on the Dogma DVD, sorta like they did with Tarantino and the "Pulp Fiction" laserdisc.

  • Jason Lee appeared at Dogma's UCLA screeing last week for a Q&A session afterward. He had on a Clerks T-shirt and answered questions for about half an hour or so. There was no really new information revealed. Most people just asked about what was his favorite VA film or how acting differed from skating. We hear the crowd turnout was among the biggest ever for a film screening at the college.

  • On NPR Weekend Edition this morning they reveiwed/discussed Dogma. Although it hasn't been posted yet, the review (in real audio format) should be available at http://www.npr.org/programs/wesat/ under the latest show link (last week's show (11/6) is still the latest show). Keep watching.

11.19.99 - DOGMA GROSSES 8.8 MILLION FOR WEEKEND

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • The results are in, and Dogma finished 3rd overall for the weekend but EASILY finished second in per screen averages behind the "Pokémon" flick. Keep in mind that this figure is still just speculation, but in the past this has normally been fairly accurate. Reuters says:
Of the three other new releases in the top 10, only one opened strongly. "Dogma," a controversial religious satire about fallen angels, played by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, debuted at No. 3 with $8.8 million. Its solid per screen average of $6,935 was the second highest in the top 10, behind "Pokemon's" staggering $10,647.

While we didn't quite get to 10 million, this is a really fine number, and one to be proud of. The flick's considered a success, with a very strong opening weekend, great word of mouth, and some incredible anecdotes of packed audiences around the country. Had Dogma hit the number of screens that "Pokémon" or "The Bone Collector" had, there's no telling what kind of numbers the film might have posted. Still, a per-screen of $6,935 is nothing to sneeze at, and we'd like to take this time to congratulate Kevin, the rest of View Askew, and Lions Gate for zan excellent film, a great ad campaign, and an opening weekend to be most proud of. We're happy to have been a part of it, in our own weird little way.

11.18.99 - KEVIN POSTS ON DOGMA, MORE...

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Kevin's been reading the web board very closely since the film came out, and even stopped by to answer a post or two, but mostly to thank everyone for seeing the flick, as well as post a very important message regarding a dude who made some very significant contibutions to the flick. Here's those 2 messages. Check the View Askew WWWBoard to read more posts from Kev on Dogma, but most of all, stop by and tell us what you thought of the flick!
      Thanks, all

Got the numbers from last night. Everyone's pleased. The film ain't no 'Pokemon' (hell, what is?), but it did well. Final numbers on Tuesday, of course.

But this was never about numbers anyway. It was always about celebrating the faith and (hopefully) entertaining a crowd in the process. Largely, it would seem, mission accomplished.

A very Christian hello to some of our new posters - the ones who weren't such fans of the flick. My apologies if it wasn't your cup of tea, but at the end of the day, aren't we both on the same side (if there is such a thing)? I'm for Jesus, you're for Jesus - we just go about expressing it different ways. I'm cool with your way; why can't you allow me mine? Tolerance: it's what Christ taught us.

      For example...

I'd read about a potential protest of 500 people outside our local theatre in Eatontown. In an effort to better understand these folks, I decided to hang out with them. However, not wanting to seem disruptive, I drafted a few signs to carry ('To Hell With Dogma' and the slightly more amusing - though not that original I discovered when I hit the board late last night - 'Dogma is Dog-Shit'). Jen, Bryan and I headed over to the theatre to see what the climate was outside (beyond the 40 degree temperature).

The 500 weren't in evidence. The head count (including us) was twenty. We held our signs and quietly prayed the Rosary with the group for about an hour (well, I prayed the rosary; Jen and Bryan are relative heathens when it comes to the Mysteries and the Memorare'). I was even interviewed by a local newscrew, not as myself, during which I maintained that I was mad about the movie, and that I would not patronize it (although I couldn't help but mention that I liked the director's first film a little). A woman told me my sign wasn't appropriate (the 'Dog-Shit' one), and I apologized, offering that the movie wasn't appropriate, from what I'd been told. We agreed that it'd be better if I removed the offending word, so I did as much, rendering my sign a neutered 'Dogma is Dog'.

After the Rosary I got a chance to talk to some of the people in attendance (again, not wanting to ruin their night, I didn't say "Hi - I made 'Dogma'.") They told me that they were disappointed in the showing, but were glad to see someone young there (the average age of the group, excluding our trio, was about sixty). I was told some nasty things about my parents, and some nastier things about myself (or rather, the director). Jen - who's much more disturbed by these goings-on - asked if anyone had actually seen the film. Some mentioned reading a review, but that was about as close as they got.

In all fairness, these were nice, decent people who don't like what they heard about the flick. In truth, if they did see the movie, it wouldn't alter their opinion. I didn't feel negative toward them in the least (in fact, I admired the fact that they were outside in the cold, too far from the theatre to really be effective, but willing to take a stand regardless). At the end of the day, we're not that different - we two groups of Catholics. They just have a different set of values from me, and a lot more reverence for the Church itself than for the words of our Lord. They seemed nice enough, though. However, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed that they didn't have any donuts or coffee out there.

Point is, I didn't get in their face or flame them - as the Catholic League enthusiast in our midst seems to think is appropriate. That would be like an atheist going into church and yelling contrarian sentiments at the priest mid-Mass. I'll never understand the folks who can't simply dislike something (as Christians, we're not supposed to hate), and feel the need to go to a place where folks who DO like something (and aren't hurting anyone in the process) congregate, and get up in their face about feeling the opposite. If I don't like something, I pay little or no attention to it, or just flat-out ignore it (unless it was something like rape or murder; as much as I loathe rapists and murderers, if I ran into one - mid-act - I couldn't simply ignore them or their evil acts; I'd kill myself trying to stop them).

But that's what these people outside the theatre equate with what they perceive to be Catholic-bashing: rape or murder. To them, a perceived attack on their faith is tantamount to physical harm on someone. And while that's a little screwy in opinion (because, let's be honest - God is a lot stronger than these people let on, and faith is a concept, not a human life), I can't knock them for it. Like I said - their values are just different than mine.

However, that doesn't make me wrong and them right, or vice versa. It just makes us different, and we take different approaches toward the same thing: Heaven.

Okay - enough sermonizing. On with the countdown...

I'll be on Larry King Live on Monday. Rock and I taped Charlie Rose yesterday, but I'm not sure when it's running. And 'Dogma' is playing somewhere near you. Take someone you love and respect to see it. Then go see 'Bond' next week. And if 'Bond' is sold out, go see 'Dogma' again. And again. And again. (As I've mentioned - I got a kid I'm going to have to put through college.)

Thanks, all, for the past and continued support. It would seem our fourth flick is going to outgross all our other flicks combined, which - when you remove the dollar figure - means more audiences are being exposed to View Askew. I'm glad it was with this film, and to that, I have one more thanks to give...

      Thanks, God.

    11.17.99 - DOGMA QUICKIES

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Peter King (Lead Football writer for Sports Illustrated) writes a weekely column called Monday Morning QB. At the end of the column each week he has a section called '10 Things I think I think'...8 of the 10 are usually football related. This week # 4 is:

      4. I think "Dogma'' sounds like a pretty good movie. I'm going.

  • Hollwood.Com has quite a bit on Dogma today, including some quotes from our friend Tom from Lions Gate:
Lions Gate's release of the controversial R-rated irreverent comedy "Dogma" opened in third place to a much better than expected estimated $8.77 million at 1,269 theaters ($6,907 per theater). Directed by Kevin Smith, it stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Salma Hayek, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, Alan Rickman and Chris Rock.

"We're thrilled," Lions Gate Co-President Tom Ortenberg said Sunday morning. "The picture was playing to sellout crowds literally across America. We had very few double prints, so to do that kind of a per-screen average I think was phenomenal. The picture seemed to play well broadly. We were getting not just a younger crowd and a college crowd, but also a decent adult crowd who were drawn by a lot of wonderful reviews on the picture, and we played so brilliantly at three very prestigious film festivals -- Cannes, Toronto and New York.

"In addition to being a kind of broad-based pop culture entertainment, it's also very clever and insightful and, I think, that was very appealing to a more adult audience, as well, that a lot of people didn't think we would be able to attract. I was at many different theaters this weekend watching the film, and audiences were just eating it up."

Who was on hand to see "Dogma?" "Slightly more male, but the film has a lot of things going for it," Ortenberg said. "I don't have the final polling numbers (as of early Sunday morning), but it was very broad-based -- a good mix of males and females and more adult than some people thought we would be able to attract."

Ortenberg said that Lions Gate has a lot scheduled on the promotion front this week: "We have a lot of good week two publicity banked. Knowing there are a couple of biggies opening this week against us, we decided to hold off on some of the publicity so that (it breaks in the second week). Today, there's a New York Times piece on Kevin Smith. Tomorrow, Kevin is on 'Larry King Live.' Wednesday, Selma is on Jay Leno. Thursday, Jason Lee is on Craig Kilborn. There are features this coming week in Time, Entertainment Weekly and Rolling Stone. I think that would be considered by some to be a great week one publicity campaign. We think that will really help keep the profile of the movie high.

"We'll probably add a few (theaters) in some metropolitan areas where the picture is playing particularly well. But I think we picked a good number (of runs to open with)."

While it's playing strongly in big cities, Ortenberg said, it's also doing well all over. "We're having great weekends in Knoxville, Tenn., and Toledo, Ohio," he said. "In Toledo, we're going to do over $20,000 this weekend. And Knoxville is going to be doing well over $10,000. And Savannah, Ga., is going to be doing over $10,000. So it's really playing well across the board. In some of the more metropolitan areas, it's doing even better, where we might add a few screens. But, for the most part, I think we'll stick around where we are."

    11.16.99 - DOGMA QUICKIES

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • We've been looking forward to this one. The U.S. Catholic Conference has finally released their official classification and statement on Dogma. Prepare yourself...
Dogma -- Because of anti-religious buffoonery, intense violence, sexual references, substance abuse, assorted vulgarities, profanity and recurring rough language, the U.S. Catholic Conference classification is O -- morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted. Dogma is a sophomoric religious satire in which a heavenly messenger persuades the last descendant of Joseph and Mary to leave her job in an abortion clinic and set out to stop a pair of fallen angels from regaining heaven by means of a plenary indulgence. The unfunny proceedings rely on a mindless mix of irreverence and absurdity in poking fun at biblical characters and Christian stereotypes.

  • Wil Wilkins has placed all of his Dogma-related footage online, including all the interviews, reports, and such, at his website for your viewing pleasure. You'll need RealPlayer.

  • One recap site notices how well Dogma did, especially considering the past grosses of View Askew flicks:
The latest comedy from director Kevin Smith, "Dogma", brought him his biggest debut ever. The film, which cost only $10 million to make, will end up turning a huge profit for distributor Lions Gate. The film stars Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Chris Rock, Alan Rickman, Salma Hayek, Smith, Jason Mewes, Jason Lee, George Carlin and singer Alanis Morissette. "Dogma" will easily pass "Chasing Amy" ($12.0 million) as Smith's biggest hit film.

  • A magazine called Link that gets sent out to college students ran an interview with Kevin about Dogma, as well as a list of his top 5 religious-themed movies. Here ya go.

  • We were just gonna run the Kevin part of this story, but the other stuff, well...interested us...So we thought that we'd run the whole darn thing. Be sure and at least read the last paragraph for the Kev reference:
JENNA CONTINUES TO CAUSE A STIR

Seth McCoy posts: "Jenna Jameson, the world's number one Porn Star and Wicked Pictures contract star, is at it again. Jenna is featured in clothing giant Abercrombie & Fitch's 1999 Naughty and Nice Holiday catalog and, apparently, her inclusion may be a little too much for some to handle.

"The catalog is creating a stir for its 'pornographic' nature. Jenna is pictured wearing a yellow tank top and little else. In the interview, Jenna discusses the business and gives tips on how to please a woman. Abercrombie & Fitch actively pursued Jenna because she is an international superstar and is considered both naughty and nice.

"Jenna is featured on page 104, as well as mentioned in the 'Good Omen' section. She joins stars such as Kevin Smith, Andy Dick and the cast of 'That 70's Show' in the catalog that was released November 1, 1999."

Ummm, if anyone's got an extra catalog they'd like to send us...Just for the site, of course...Research and all...Heheh... Let us know. Pronto. ;)

  • Finally today, Kev's quoted in NewsWeek:
"I'm not saying the church is bad, just that God is better."

11.15.99 - CHARLIE ROSE DOGMA PANEL TONIGHT

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • According to Charlie Rose's website, the Dogma Panel interviews will air TONIGHT!!! Don't miss this show, folks, check your local listings -- It'll be on PBS. And we hear it's a WONDERFUL interview, as Rose always seems to do a fantatsic job at getting the most out of the guests. Again, rumor has it this thing might be primed for the Dogma DVD, so you'll get your first look today.

11.14.99 - CBS PRESSES LIONS GATE TO DROP AD

  • Looks like "Pope Fiction" may have been the smarter tagline, after all:
CBS Protest Gets 'Dogma' Ads Pulled

      By LYNN ELBER
      AP Television Writer

LOS ANGELES (AP) _ ``Touched by an Angel'' triumphed over ``Dogma'' as ads for the satirical movie were pulled from newspapers and radio because of CBS' complaint that its family series was being exploited.

``Get Touched by an Angel'' was the slogan used to tout the Kevin Smith movie, which has drawn fire for its depiction of the Roman Catholic church.

In a Nov. 12 letter to Lions Gate Films, CBS said it received calls from people confused about whether a link exists to ``our family oriented television series and your irreverent movie that apparently belittles every religious tenet embraced by our show.''

CBS said the promotion exploits the show's name and demanded the ad campaign stop. Lions Gate made the letter public Tuesday; a CBS spokesman said the company had no further comment.

``We've instantly changed our ads,'' said Mark Urman, co-president of Lions Gate Films. ``Sometimes capitulation is the most sensible thing to do. It's not a very big deal. We think it's kind of hilarious, in fact.''

The slogan has been featured for several months on ``Dogma'' publicity posters, Urman said Tuesday. ``We never meant to harm or infringe upon them,'' he said.

``Dogma'' has been the focus of controversy since before its release. An outcry by the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights over the script prompted Disney subsidiary Miramax Films to withdraw as distributor.

Smith, whose previous films include ``Clerks'' and ``Chasing Amy,'' has said the film is aimed at open-minded Catholics, using two gun-toting, sinner-slaying angels (Ben Affleck, Matt Damon) to satirize zealots who see violence as a path to heaven. ``Touched by an Angel,'' CBS' top-rated series, stars Roma Downey, Della Reese and John Dye as benevolent angels dispatched from heaven to help troubled people.

11.13.99 - FILM GROSSES 3.04 MILLION ON FRIDAY

  • Dogma's Friday take put the flick in 3rd place, with 3.04 million, second in per-screen average behind the Pokemon film. We gotta admit, if you'd have told us a cartoon movie from Japan about weird monsters that fight each other would beat out Dogma opening weekend, we'd have laughed ourselves silly. What a world we live in. But still, Pokemon's a different crowd. While we'd have liked to have seen Dogma hit #1, the take is still quite impressive, and the best ever for a View Askew production. Tom from Lions Gate contacted us and wanted us to thank all of you for going to see the flick. Dogma is on track to make about $10 million this weekend, not too shabby of an opening at all, and should easily be Kevin's most popular film to date, by far. We'll keep you posted on the box office results for the rest of the weekend.

    Friday's Top Ten (USA)

    (average indicates per-theatre average)

    1. Pokeman: The First Movie - $9 million, 2,901 screens, $3,127 average
    2. The Bone Collector - $3.8 million, 2,587 screens, $1,477 average
    3. Dogma - $3 million, 1,260 screens, $2,409 average
    4. The Messenger -$2.9 million, 2,147 screens, $1,393 average
    5. Anywhere But Here -- $1.9 million, 1,673 screens, $1,136 average
    6. The Bachelor - $1.7 million, 2,524 screens, $677 average
    7. The Insider - $1.5 million, 1,833 screens, $837 average
    8. House on Haunted Hill - $1.4 million, 2,350 screens, $555 average
    9. Double Jeopardy - $980,000, 2,110 screens, $464 average
    10. The Sixth Sense - $810,000, 1,418 screens, $571 average

11.12.99 - HOWARD STERN APPEARANCE ONLINE

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Ming was good enough to capture the entire Stern interivew with Kevin & Chris Rock this morning and place it online at View Askew for your listening pleasure. We're happy about this because we were unable to get a tape of the thing ourselves this morning, and knew a lot of you probably missed it. Anyway, thankfully, now you can hear it all. Click HERE to check it out.

Also, the Stern fansite marksfriggin.com ran a summary of the piece that covered the highlights today. It's a shame only Jackie saw the flick, we think Howard and Robin will really dig it:

Director Kevin Smith And Comedian Chris Rock Come In. 11/12/99. 7:25am

Kevin Smith and Chris Rock came in this morning to promote the new movie ''Dogma'' which Kevin directed. The movie opens wide today. Jackie said he saw it and really enjoyed it. Howard spent a while talking to Chris about some stories he's read in the tabloids lately. Chris told him that they're all false and that he's with his wife now and they're doing fine. Howard also asked Chris if he lightens his skin. He saw a tape one time from years ago and Chris looked darker then than he does now. Chris immediately changed the subject by saying ''Hey! You're getting divorced!'' Howard explained why he separated from Alison and both Chris and Kevin hung on every word of it. Kevin's been married for 6 months and said it's going great. Howard said 6 months is like dating, not like 21 years of marriage. They also talked about porno movies and the subject of Houston's Bukake movie came up. Howard had one of these ''Bukake'' movies loaded up in the VCR so he showed Kevin and Chris a short clip. He got sick over it and couldn't watch more than 5 seconds of it without gagging. Kevin spent a couple of minutes talking about ''Dogma'' and also about the ''Superman'' movie he wrote that just kind of faded away. He was going to work with director Tim Burton on it but Burton changed his mind so it just went away. Chris was going to play Jimmy Olson in the movie. That led to Chris telling a story about a meeting he had with actor Chris O'Donnell who played Robin in the last ''Batman'' movie. The two of them were talking and O'Donnell asked Rock what he was up to. He told O'Donnell that he was going to play Jimmy Olson in ''Superman'' and O'Donnell says ''A black Jimmy Olson? .. Yeah, I guess so.'' Rock thought that was pretty funny. Chris Rock has a new episode of his HBO show on tonight at 11:30pm.

11.12.99 - UNIVERSAL NOT TO RELEASE DOGMA ON VIDEO

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Believe it or not, at presstime, it seems that Universal's official stance is that they will NOT release Dogma on home video and DVD. This comes as a shock to us since we'd heard otherwise, especially due to the overwhelming success of the Mallrats DVD, quite possibly the most feature-rich, complete DVD out on the market today. Here's a press release that we managed to snag. It comes from Kim Pratt of Universal Home Video. We bet/hope they change their tune after Dogma has a great opening weekend, but it's still distressing to see this:
      Hi everyone!

This Friday, Lions Gate will release theatrically Kevin Smith's newest film, Dogma. Dogma is already getting a bit of press due to the content of the movie (it tells the story of two fallen angels (Matt Damon and Ben Affleck) who find a "loophole" that will allow them back into heaven). It also stars Salma Hayek, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Linda Fiorentino and Alanis Morrisette. In an effort to make sure that you all are informed, we wanted to let you know that although Lions Gate is releasing the film theatrically, we will not be releasing it on video. We do not know at this time which company will handle the video release. If you have questions, please call!

      Thanks,
      Kimberly

Unusual, huh? It's very rare for something like this in the video industry -- A press release for a flick that's just coming out in theaters? Saying they WON'T release on video? Strange indeed. Call it another first for Dogma. We'll keep our eyes on this story as it develops.

    11.12.99 - DOGMA QUICKIES

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • CNN.COM now has their own POSITIVE Dogma review up, as well as a transcript of their recent online chat with Kevin. RC's got the review, and the transcript can be read HERE.

  • Could Dogma be responsible for this? Lions Gate shares went up almost 12% on the Toronto Stock Exchange yesterday. Cool!

  • Ben Affleck's appearance on Conan O'Brien has been posted in full over at Affleck.Com.

  • Moviefone has been listing Dogma as either the number 2 or number one most requested flick for shows and showtimes this weekend. Ben Affleck also was scheduled for a live Moviefone chat today at 1:00 EST, sorry we missed it, we didn't hear about it until after the fact.

  • Encore Media Group, the parent company to Starz and several pay-television channels has aquired the pay-TV rights to Dogma -- ALREADY! The film will debut on the new Encore channel and several other Encore-owned outlets in the fall of 2000.

  • Deja.Com, a movie-oriented site, has a section where you can rate Dogma. Check it out HERE.

  • Please take note: That Matt Damon shirt with the road sign that appears in Dogma, the one we mentioned was selling on Ebay, is just a regular old t-shirt. It's not from the film, just a replica, like the ones being sold at the Stash (see above). We have no idea why it's fetching so much dinero. Be careful what ya bid for.

  • Will Wilkins will be playing all of his Dogma interview footage and other coverage on the web again TONIGHT. See our last update for more details on where to find it.

  • TV Guide Online interviewed Chris Rock recently...And Another Universe managed to summarize his Dogma related comments:
      Rock Talks Dogma

In a recent interview with TV Guide Online comedian Chris Rock admitted that playing the forgotten, black 13th apostle wasn't difficult - he just had to pick up on the cues of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon who play the fallen angles Loki and Bartelby in the film.

"I just played off the other actors," Rock said. "I locked into the part, and once you make the leap that we are apostles and angels and everything, then it all seems real."

"I stuck fairly close to the script because I really liked the script. I really respected it. I respect all of Kevin's movies, especially Chasing Amy.

"I wanted the part. I wanted the part bad. Kevin was very worried that I would start ad libbing. I said, "You know Kevin, I am a professional comedian. It's okay if I ad lib a little. If Salma [Hayek] starts ad libbing, then you've got problems."

"Kevin's really cool and a really good director. He runs intense rehearsals. Yet it's really light on the set. Rehearsals are like boot camp. You are up, it's like 9 to 5, and, you do every scene over and over. "Do it again. Again. Again!" He blocks everything in the room. There are diagrams on the floor. So when you get to the set you know exactly what you're doing.

"And Kevin is great as Silent Bob. He's very silent."

  • Zentertainment reports: CORONA COMING ATTRACTIONS report the title of COYOTE UGLY,which Kevin Smith had a hand in writing, has been changed to BANDITO SMILES. The change was due to a copyright conflict with a Japanese cartoon named COYOTE UGLY, and this new name reflects a cocktail featured in the film made of tequila and ZIMA.
  • Also from Zentertainment: MIRAMAX has acquired distribution rights to THE THIRD WHEEL, a romantic comedy produced by Matt Damon and Ben Affleck about an uninvited stranger who tags along on a date. Denise Richards (oooh), Luke Wilson, Jay Lacopo, and Affleck star.

  • Ah, and thanks to Politically Incorrect, the debate goes on...
      BILL MAHER SAVAGES CATHOLICISM

On the November 11 edition of the ABC show, "Politically Incorrect," host Bill Maher interviewed "Dogma" director Kevin Smith. In doing so, Maher blasted Catholics: "Catholics practice what they want to practice. They go to see the Pope 'cause he's a big celebrity, but they go home and they masturbate, they practice birth control.well they do."

When someone remarked that a lot of people are not attending churches or synagogues these days, Maher stepped up his attack on Catholicism: "But if I may pause to correct something, you shouldn't, I don't think, lump in the synagogue with the Church. They've operated very differently, OK. The synagogue-and I'm not Jewish, but I was raised Catholic-was never as corrupt as the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church, which is people, not God running it, OK, hugely corrupt, did horrible things through history, maybe OK because they were that powerful."

William Donohue, president of the Catholic League, issued the following statement on this matter:

"This is not the first time that Bill Maher has proven to be an anti-Catholic bigot. Not surprisingly, the audience laughed at his comments, showing how utterly acceptable anti-Catholicism is these days. Indeed, Maher's remarks prove that it is anything but politically incorrect to bash Catholics on 'Politically Incorrect.'

"If ABC had as low a tolerance for Catholic bashing as it does other expressions of bigotry, it would terminate Maher immediately. At the very least, the Catholic League wants an apology. We await the network's response."

  • Looks like Kevin's snagged himself another radio appearance for tomorrow. He's scheduled to appear on the KABC-790 radio show I co-host with George Pennacchio this Saturday at 10 AM Pacific. For those not in L.A., the station broadcasts on the web kabc.com. You can even call in for Kevin at 1-800-222-KABC.

  • For the curious, a few more tidbits on that cool-sounding Dogma premiere shindig out on the west coast this week:
I also attended the L.A. premiere and afterparty. In addition to those the other scooper listed, here's who I saw:

      Jake Busey (afterparty)
Dash Mihok (of The Thin Red Line; sat with Alanis at afterparty)
      Gwyneth Paltrow (screening + party)
      Jason Schwartzman (of Rushmore; afterparty)
      Jennifer Tilly (screening only)
      Luke Wilson (afterparty)

In a side note, Gwyneth left moments before Salma and Edward did. Also, the screening took place at the Harmony Gold Screening Room on Sunset, while the party took place on Dominick's on Beverly Blvd. (NOT Sunset).

11.12.99 - DOGMA RELEASED IN US AND CANADA

  • It almost doesn't seem real, but after close to 2 years of operating this website, the film that it centers on has now been released nationwide! Early reports are showing that folks are cramming the theaters, in some cases even the aisles, to be the first to catch a glimpse of Dogma. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive, from the major media outlets all the way down to the casual filmgoers who've just written in. We hope you enjoy the film, it's one we're proud to have stood by for such a long time. Now what are you waiting for?!??! Get out there and SEE it!!!!

11.08.99 - SEE DOGMA THIS WEEKEND!

  • We're sure this goes without saying, but we're urging all fans that plan to see Dogma to see it THIS WEEKEND to give us a nice opening gross. While the picture may do well on word of mouth, it's normally opening weekend that sets the stage for what's to come. Again, though, we're sure anyone who reads this site plans to be there right away. Lions Gate wants to also extend their thanks to all of you for your continued visits to this site, as well as for keeping the anticipation levels so high. We hope you all enjoy the flick.

    11.08.99 - DOGMA NEWSBITES...

  • We've got a TON of promotional television and radio spots from Kevin & the gang this week - Let it be known that the cast and crew are REALLY giving their all in promoting Dogma, no doubt about it!
    • On MTV's The Hot Zone, Ananda Lewis hangs out with the cast of Dogma all week. Today she interviewed Kevin. It should repeat again tonight at 1:30am. In between the videos (whoa, MTV shows VIDEOS? Since when?) you can see a interview with Kevin plus a few scenes from the movie. Tomorrow Ananda hangs out with Linda Fiorentino.

    • Ben Affleck hits the Craif Kilborn's Late Late Show on November 16th, a Tuesday. Jason Lee will be on the program two days later, November 18.

    • Kevin Smith will be on WNYC's New York & Co., a daily talk/interview show, this Friday (11/12). You can find them at AM820 on the dial. They also archive and post all interviews on their website. It should be there by the end of the day Monday (11/15).

    • Looks like we were wrong - Howard Stern WILL host Kevin again this soon, even though he WAS just on a month or two ago. This is GREAT news, because Howard reaches a TON of listeners nationwide, and is a big fan of Kevin's, so this will be some fantastic promotion for Dogma. Right now, it's scheduled for 9 AM this Wednesday, but MAY get bumped back to Friday's show.

    • Kevin & Chris Rock are scheduled for CBS's Early Show this Wednesday, as well.

    • Salma Hayek will be on NBC's "Later Today" tomorrow (Tuesday) to talk about Dogma. They showed clips of her strip scene in the promotions today.

  • We're starting to hear rumblings about planned peaceful protests outside of theaters where Dogma will be playing, at least in some of the more major cities. Get ready for some picket signs to read as you wait in line with your 7 bucks (or whatever ungodly fee they charge in your area these days).

  • Dogma LATE In Australia: According to the marketing department for Village Roadshow, who will distribute Dogma in Australia, the film is not set to debut until June 2000 in the country. Sorry, mates...

  • As always, hit Rumor Control today -- We've got a couple new articles and reviews, including one from a PRIEST who dug the flick! Now THAT'S what we like to see!

    11.04.99 - DOGMA NEWSBITES...

  • iF Magazine has a cool 3 part interview with Kevin that starts this Friday. It's all part of their continuing DOGMA coverage (a 2-parter with Chris Rock's on the way, too). We'll have the full coverage for you right HERE.

  • They're baaaaaaaaaaaaack. This piece comes from the Hollywood Reporter (E! Online also summarized it):
      Mass Protest Over 'Dogma'

Even though Disney-owned Miramax Films will not be the company releasing Dogma next week, Disney is still feeling the heat over Kevin Smith's controversial satire of Catholicism. The Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights said it has collected nearly 300,000 signatures as part of its crusade against what it terms anti-Catholic depictions in the media. The league this week began shipping Disney chairman and CEO Michael Eisner the results of its four-month petition drive calling on the studio to sever its ties with Miramax. Disney spokesman John Dreyer said, "We plan to keep Miramax." "There has never been any intent on the part of the company to denigrate any individual or organization," Dreyer added. Representatives for Miramax declined comment. Dogma, starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon as fallen angels, is slated for release by Lions Gate on Nov. 12.

  • A small, but positive review appears in the new Marie Claire Magazine:
"Dogma(Lions Gate) The best Kevin Smith movie yet, Dogma is, despite the controversy, a wonderfully funny, joyous ode to faith. Ben Affleck, and Matt Damon play renegadse angels threatening humanity, while Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, and Linda Fiorentino aim to save it. Helping out in their own special way are Jay(Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith), this time as prophets sent by God."

  • Pittsburgh's local NBC affilate, Channel 11, mentioned Dogma on the 6pm news last night. Just a brief piece mentioned that it was filmed there. They had a local film critic talk about it (he said it was good). Strangely, they also claimed that no footage had been released, so they only showed some poor black and white pictures (Matt and Ben in the airport). The flick plays the Pittsburgh Film Festival tomorrow and Pitt on Saturday.

  • A quirky little site called HollywoodJesus.com has got its own Dogma page and - seemingly - the creators of the site are looking forward to the movie! More HERE.

  • The new LA Weekly has a two page ad for Dogma; One page for the soundtrack and the other page containing a different poster image, like the version b at the official site, exept the characters are stacked in a pyramid and there are 4 reviews along side the cast, including a new one from the LA Weekly, which calls the movie "Sexy and hilarious. One of the years most exciting movies".

  • The Popcorn website has been keeping track of Dogma's progress for its impending UK release. This short blurb also has links to some of their earlier coverage.

  • There's an interview in GQ Magazine with Kevin this month, though the title we heard led us to believe it's the same piece as in George. Can anyone verify? If it's new, please send us a transcript for posting!

11.01.99 - KEVIN OUT PROMOTING DOGMA...

  • Kevin checked in with a post about his plans for the next few weeks, and this sounds like just a start. We'll let him do the talking here, but then come back with a summary of a few OTHER Dogma-related appearances that you might ALSO be interested in:
      Just Got Back...

...from Atlanta. Spent a day doing local press, as well as CNN and t.v. stuff. Friday night, we had what seemed like the best screening of the movie yet at this College Media Convention. Many thanks to the crowd for the hoots, the hollers, and the standing 'O'. Hopefully, the two hour plus Q&A didn't disappoint.

We're getting closer and closer now, folks. In the big city papers this weekend (NY Times, LA Times, etc.) Lions Gate ran the four ads with the cast breakdown. Also, Lions Gate shipped us (and many theatres) a huge, cardboard 'Dogma' standee. This is the first standee we've ever had on a film, so we were all pretty excited. It's now in the window of the Stash.

Tomorrow night is Conan, and Thursday is Total Request Live, as well as a screening for the National Board of Review at night. Say a prayer for yours truly.

Friday is the Pittsburgh screening, at which I hope to see a few of you. >From there, it's off to L.A. for some last minute press (print and t.v.), before coming home for the opening weekend (which is also the weekend Harley's getting Baptised). If I don't show up 'round here for a couple weeks, that's why.

Now, let's summarize what we know for the appearance timeline, including Kev and a couple of other View Askew vets, as well:

    10.31.99 - MORE DOGMA PRE-SCREENINGS...

  • A free screening of DOGMA tentatively scheduled for Nov 9, at Indiana University (Bloomington) Memorial Union - Whittenberger Audtorium. Very limited seating. Student/Faculty priority, but some passes may be available to public. Keep an eye out for passes. More details to come upon official announcement. Estimated chance of entry: somewhere in the middle.

  • More of the 'Dog in Dallas: There's a screening of it at the Loews Keystone on Nov. 3rd at 7:30. Tickets were handed out at a store downtown called "Off the Street Dallas" starting today. Hopefully you snagged some or can stop in for whatever remains.

  • There will be an advanced screening of Dogma on Tuesday November 9th for Ohio State University students at the AMC Lennox. Students can win passes from the station The Big Wazoo 107.1. Nice name, huh?

  • San Francisco State University -- Tuesday, November 9th in the McKenna Theater in the Creative Arts Building. No further information on who and how many will be admitted. Sorry.

  • Atomic Comics in Mesa, AZ is distributing passes to Dogma on November 4. This is not an advance screening - the passes are good for Nov. 12th - but it is a way for locals to see it for free on opening night (and catch up on all their comics, too).

  • Okay, Canucks, here's your chance: Toronto's National Post is giving away 50 tickets to a screening of Dogma for Wednesday, November 10th at the Paramount theatre. All you have to do is fax in the scan or e-mail them by noon on November 2nd. FAX: (416)386-2716, or e-mail: contests@nationalpost.com Attention:Dogma. Good luck!
  • Premiere Magazine is hosting a screening on Wednesday, 11/10 at 6:30pm at UA Union Square in New York City.

10.28.99 - DOGMA NOVELIZATION IN PREVIEWS

  • Could it be that we'll actually still see a novelized version of Dogma in addition to the already scheduled screenplay book? Previews thinks so, in fact, they're soliciting orders for it (WARNING: POSSIBLE PLOT THEME SPOILERS LIE AHEAD, VERY MINOR, THOUGH):
      Kevin Smith's Dogma TPB
      by Kevin Smith

Two angels, Bartleby and Loki, have been cast out of heaven because Loki - after spending many years as God's avenging angel of death - convinces Bartleby that killing in God's name is not a cool thing (Ed. Note - This is INCORRECT) As punishment, God banishes both angels to Wisconsin for all eternity and fixes it so that angels can never handle their liquor. But when Bartleby and Loki hear about de-sinning that takes place in a New Jersey church, they make the journey to the state in the hopes that they can can be forgiven and return back to heaven. They have no idea who or what they are up against! (Groves Press) Soft Cover - $13.00

We're not sure if this is a mistake, but the fact that Groves Press is listed tells us that something is up. We'll keep our eyes on this one.

    10.28.99 - NEW ARTICLES & REVIEWS

  • There's quite a few never before seen articles and reviews over on the press page, so be sure and check that out as part of your visit to the site today. There's even a really sweet artice from Ebay Magazine on Dogma Rumor Control, that gives us a really nice link and quotes us, too -- If anyone knows where we can get some hard copies of this magazine, let us know. Thanks, Ebay!

10.28.99 - MORE CHANCES TO SEE DOGMA EARLY!

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Radio stations, web sites, and colleges all around the country have all caught Dogma fever. There are TONS of free or almost free screenings happening in the next couple of weeks, giving YOU the chance to catch Dogma on the big screen before the rest of the country takes a look. If you read the past couple days' news, you'll see we've already mentioned a couple, now here's a rundown of a bunch more that we've just recently learned of:
    • There will be a screening of Dogma on Friday the 29th at Lowe's Cineplex City Place in Dallas. We've got no idea if this is the same Dallas screening we reported on yesterday, but rumor has it that tickets are circulating through critics and press type folks. Hopefully there may be some extra seats for fans at the show if people just show up, but it sounds like this one may be a closed screening. CHANCE OF ENTRY: LOW

    • Dogma will be screened at Michigan State University on Wednesday, November 3rd at 8 PM. Tickets can be obtained this Friday night at 6:30 in Wells Hall. They are free for dorm residents, and $2 for students with ID (Rumor has it that they may also be made available to the general public for $5). Our scooper on this one will also be reviewing the movie the next morning on his radio show sometime between 8-10 AM. You can listen online here: http://wdbm.msu.edu/Listen.html. CHANCE OF ENTRY: MID/HIGH

    • A Dartmouth College student tells us that there will be "sneak preview" of Dogma on campus the evening of November the 5th. No further details are available at this time. CHANCE OF ENTRY: ????

    • The University of Maryland at College Park will be showing a sneak of Dogma next Thursday, November 4 at 7:30. Leading up to it, the rest of the Jersey trilogy will have "intimate" showings Monday through Wednesday at nine in the Rec Center Lounge. Advance tickets for Dogma can be picked up Wednesday at 4:00 in the Rec center or at one of the other shows. Students get priority, but the general public also has a good chance of making it in if they show up early enough. Unfortunately, due to renovations on the historic Hoff theatre, Dogma will be shown in the cavernous BioPsych lecture hall, but it is a sneak and it is free. Plus, college screenings usually include cool free stuff like posters or stickers. CHANCE OF ENTRY: HIGH

    • KLLC "Alice" 97.3 in the San Francisco Bay Area is hosting a screening of Dogma. They've been giving tickets away all week (at various times) - Good luck! CHANCE OF ENTRY: IF YOU'RE LUCKY

We know you'll all do your best to get into these screenings, but also trust you will PAY to go and see the flick opening weekend, as well! Let's get those grosses up there, the flick deserves to have a butt-kicking opening weekend. We'll be there -- Plus, ya know ya gotta see the big announcement at the end of the credits regarding the next flick, right?

10.27.99 - PERSONAL REVIEWS & PICS FROM THE DOGMA BENEFIT

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Hopefully you took a few minutes and read our Dogma benefit trip report yesterday...But even if ya did, you may want to surf back over because we've just added a lot more pics & stories from the event, courtesy of Gramp , as well as pics, reviews, and a transcription of Kev's introduction that can be found over at All Purpose Reviews. Again, we were happy to be a part of it and hope everyone had a good time. Sure sounds like ya did. Thanks again for coming out to see a great flick and benefit diabetes reasearch and treatment at the same time.

    10.27.99 - SEE DOGMA EARLY!

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • A sports radio station in Dallas is doing a Dogma screening. It is part of 1310 The Tickets 10-12 Chris Arnold Show. The two guys on the air are known for their movie reviews and have had numerous screenings the last two years. The tickets were available yesterday at around 11 am, but were all gone by 4:30 PM. The screening is next Wednesday but they have not released the location yet. The show is also supposed to have a phone interview with Kevin. Sorry for the late notice for you folks in the Dallas area, but if we get any more info on how you might be able to get in on the screening, we'll let ya know.

ALSO - For those who live in or near San Diego - they can get free Dogma advance screening passes through MovieJuice.com. MovieJuice has been really good about plugging Dogma in the past, and plans to go all out in the last month before release here. All you need to do to get in on the action is go to MovieJuice and click on the Dogma banner. It's free. Just make sure you do this BEFORE NEXT TUESDAY. Good luck! And enjoy.

10.26.99 - KEVIN SPEAKS ON THE DOGMA BENEFIT

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Kevin stopped by the board and posted a very kind message regarding last night's festivities -- And he also slipped a little hint of what's on tap for the next event in 2000 (And boy, it sounds like a biggun'!):
Thanks for coming, one and all. Sorry we couldn't do any Q&A's, but it was rather late for the theatre folks.

Some thoughts I forgot to mention or didn't realize until later...

What you saw was what we screened in Toronto and New York. It's virtually the final, but not quite. The credits are different in the release version (including the dreaded 'Jay and Silent Bob will return in....'), as well as some of the music (Beastie Boys are out, unfortunately) and some minor dialogue cleanup. Other than that, it's the same flick.

The sound in theatre one sounded muddled. Vincent made some inquiries, and it turns out that - while they did install a new stereo set-up in the theatre, the lens that reads the optical sound track was still the old lens. Hence, muddled sound - in stereo!. I apologize for that.

We did raise over ten grand for Diabetes (the exact name of the organization that gets the check escapes me right now; rest assured, it's not m bank account, though - this is legit). After the minor expenses (like renting the theatre), we'll be able to present the foundation with a ten thousand dollar check. Not too shabby. Thanks again for your generosity.

Isn't the kid's hat just adorable? If only they made them in adult sizes.

Thanks to Brad and Chris and especially Ming for coming out, as well as getting the word out there about the screening. All three gents are an integral part of what we do here at View Askew, and I can't thank them enough (and a special heads-up to Ming for the cool mention in the last Entertainment Weekly, about the 'Dogma' website; that makes two EW pieces for the Mingster).

That's about it for now. It was great seeing you all - you're why I do whatever I do, so getting together with you and sharing our latest is always a pleasure.

Next event: Vulgarthon 2, featuring 'Vulgar' and 'Big Helium Dog'. Coming sometime in 2000.

We hope you all enjoyed the flick and had a safe trip home. It was nice seeing such a great turnout, and ya know we'll be right there with ya at the next one.

10.26.99 - BRAD & CHRIS HIT THE DOGMA BENEFIT

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • Hey, we may be lagging in some areas, but we did manage to put together another one of our step by step trip reports on last night's events! As always, we hope that those of you that couldn't make it can at least feel a little bit more like you were there by reading about some of the experiences we had, stuff we noticed, people we talked to, etc. etc...Last night's event was a relatively short one compared to the last few trips we've made, thus, the summary is also a bit shorter than the usual long-windedness (though still will take a good stretch to read). So settle in, and enjoy our Dogma Benefit Screening Trip Report.

    10.26.99 - DOGMA QUICKIES

    (As Seen On News Askew)

  • iF (Independent Film) Magazine is giving away Nuns 'O Plenty in honor of Dogma. Surf over to their site HERE. and write "your own personal Dogma" and information (so they can contact you if you win a boxing nun or nunzilla), and you're ready to go. No purchase necessary. Good luck!

  • Updates over at the official Dogma website continue -- An exclusive set of behind the scenes photos from the lens of producer Scott Mosier have been added to the photo gallery for your enjoyment. Surf over to the Dogma website to check them out, and lots, lots, lots more.

  • Pittsburgh Screening Update: In an interview from the recent issue of "In Pittsburgh", Kevin reveals that he does indeed plan to be in attendance for the Dogma screening at the Three Rivers Film Festival. There ya go! Got your tickets?

  • A representative from FilmFour International confirms that Dogma will indeed hit theaters on Boxing Day (Sunday, December 26th) in the U.K. The flick's just 2 months away for our friends over the pond...

  • A scooper in St. Louis slips us a rumor that the Archdiocese of the church there sees Dogma as "Apocryphal" and may attempt to ban the movie from playing in that town. It'll be fun to watch them try, anyway.

    10.22.99 - SOUNDTRACK TRACK LISTING

  • Courtesy of a listing for pre-orders on Ebay, here's the full track listing of the upcoming Dgoma soundtrack CD. Looks like it's all of Howard Shore's score along with the new Alanis tune:
      1. Alanis Morissette: "Still"

10.22.99 - DOGMA TELEVISION ADS BEGIN

  • Looks like the TV media blitz has started nice and early for Dogma! We've got reports from folks spotting the Dogma commercial (which is basically a condensed version of the trailer with a couple of new scene bits) -- Some saw it while watching Ghostbusters 2 on Comedy Central (A walking Statue of Liberty? Puh-lease) and also during Charmed on the WB (We watch it for the articles). The E! network has also been airing the spot off and on. We're sure these are just the first of many, many more networks that will be airing the ad. Not that the flick needs it too much after all this press we've had leading up to the release, but some more promotion can never hurt!
