- Kevin was kind enough to share very specific details on all the goodies showing up when you pop those cherry “Zack and Miri” DVDs and Blurays into your players early next month. Check THIS out:
- 43 Deleted scenes (totaling 95 minutes)
- 22 Money Shots Webisodes (50 minutes)
- Feature-length documentary, Popcorn Porn: Watching Zack & Miri Make A Porno (75 minutes)
- Comic-con Panel 2008 (23 minutes)
- Gang-bang: Outtakes & Bloopers (13 minutes)
- Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy (8 minutes)
- Blu-ray only: BD Live—which will gives us the option of having downloadable bonus features at some time in the futureTotaling 4 hours and 21 minutes of bonus
Full disclosure: The extra feature – Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy (8 minutes) is only one of two parts. Due to Weinstein Co’s exclusive deal with Blockbuster, there’s a Blockbuster-Exclusive Extra Feature called “Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy Pt. 2.” So if you’re a BlockBuster cat, there’s that. I have no control over these things.
Here’s some general comments from Kevin in response to WWWBoard queries on the disc.
On a single vs. double disc DVD: “I was informed it couldn’t be one disc and have all the material we wanted on it – at least according to the folks at Weinstein Co./Genius Home Video.”
On the extras: “There’s well over an hour of extra footage. The doc itself is an hour. I don’t know what the “Money Shots” combined are, but it’s a bunch. Then there’s the flick, the San Diego ComiCon Q&A, behind-the-scenes featurettes. This DVD has, essentially, all the elements that all of our DVDs have had, except a commentary track and intros.”
See Kevin’s post for more details on his feelings on the lack of a commentary track this time around.
Finally, in his post Kevin also shared the absolutely fantastic Hong Kong poster for the film, which he would have loved as the Bluray DVD’s cover (but would have gotten sued over it). Check this work of art out.
“Zack and Miri Make a Porno” hits DVD and Bluray on Tuesday, February 3rd.

- Kevin reports that around 300 of the 2400 seats for the February 6th appearance in Toronto are STILL AVAILABLE. They may be gone by the time you read this. Buy now, as this show, like the February 7th show, WILL SELL OUT. Kevin also hints that there’s more events coming in Toronto too, but hasn’t said more at this time. No worries on going both nights either, as every Kevin show is different. With houses packed that full, these shows will be a total blast and a new record 2-day attendance – Don’t miss out.
- Moviefone lists “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” among their “50 Best Movies of 2008″ :
-
“Pairing director Kevin Smith and Seth Rogen was either going to result in something wildly overrated or sheer genius, and it wound up being the latter. “
- Kevin scores a quick mention in JoBlo’s “Requiem for Nachos” web comic this week.
- Not only is she beautiful, but she’s also very funny and charming – Elizabeth Banks is Myspace’s “Featured Icon” for a limited time, and recorded a nice little video to go along with it. Check it out along with some photos and more. She’s also the subject of a new article at the Boston Herald website.
- We’ve seen tons of news on Flying Cars lately, so here’s a couple more snips: An American company says they will have units ready for sale in 2010 for around $195,000. Yahoo Cars has a photo as well. But stand down, folks — You’ll still need a pilot’s license to operate one.
- And don’t forget, tune into NBC Saturday night, as the lovely and talented ROSARIO DAWSON (“Clerks II”) hosts Saturday Night Live for the first time. We can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with for her to do. 11:30 PM EST/PST on NBC. For now, it’s BATTLESTAR GALACTICA time as SciFi spins the first of the 10 final episodes tonight. “Giddy” can’t even begin to describe our excitement. Later!
2-Disc “Porno” DVD Features Feature Doc, Deleted Scenes, & Bloopers…
- Kevin’s confirmed via a WWWBoard post today that the upcoming (February 3, 2008) “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” DVD will feature the following goodies:
- A bunch of deleted and extended scenes
- The full length documentary by Zak and Joey (last we heard, titled “Popcorn Porn”
- All of the “Money Shots” promo videos (uncensored, we assume with never before seen episodes that didn’t make the web)
- A blooper reel
The standard DVD set’s running 2 discs, so likely you’ll get the film on one, and the doc on the other. Of course, the Bluray will have everything on one easy place due to the massive storage capacity.
The one massive omission here is an audio commentary track, we believe the first time it’s missing on a View Askew DVD. Kevin states an interest in using SModcast to record such a track that will run along with the film, so watch for it. Lucky Bluray owners should also be able to embed future tracks released automatically into the disc.
We’ll cross our fingers for an early copy so we can hook ya up with all the other secrets and details on what’s sure to be another gem on your DVD shelves next month.

- It looks like Walmart is one of those places that will be selling the DVDs with just “Zack and Miri” as the title. Watch out, stay away — Make sure you wait for our official copies with the CORRECT title on there! Beware the watered-down cover art come February 3rd! The signed Stash copies will be 100% “Make a Porno” versions. Pricing and release info soon.
- Australian fans will finally see “Zack and Miri” make their porno on screens in the middle of February, but confirmation just came in — You’re also getting the uncensored Canadian/international one-sheet and not the stick figure poster (which now seems to have been almost a U.S. exclusive).
- Buddy Christ spotting! A new youth church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota seems like they’ve adopted the mascot if you look at the screengrab from this article on the place. The place blasts music and runs promotions like taking 50 cents off each gallon of gas at a local gas station. Sounds like a message we can easily get behind.
- Kevin reports that the Monday SModcast was slightly delayed today but is being mastered together as we speak (at presstime). By the time you’re reading this, the new episode (#72) may be online, so surf your butt on over to Quick Stop Entertainment and look up — After all, you’re now officially done reading News Askew for today. Catch ya next time.
Official “Zack and Miri” DVD Art Reveals 2-Disc Edition!
- We’ve seen the disc art in various forms, but now it looks very official with these new high-res shots. DVDActive reveals, via these new exclusive shots, that “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” will arrive February 3rd on Bluray, which we knew, but that the standard DVD edition will indeed be TWO DISCS.
We don’t have any official details on extras yet, but this makes us almost certain that we will indeed see the feature-length documentary from Chop Shop Entertainment on this set, along with (we hope) a commentary track, all the deleted scenes, and more. Frankly, we’ll be totally amazed if they’ve managed to assemble all this stuff, but considering Kevin and Scott’s talent for keeping DVD in mind right from the start, they also make it easier than some other filmmakers.
View Askew has always been the reigning king of special edition DVDs, so we’re betting this release will continue that tradition. Fans still regret that a director’s cut packed disc for “Jersey Girl” never arrived after the small low key release. We think the guys are gonna go full blast for the initial “Porno” arrival in just a few weeks. We expect full specs any day now. And we expect good news.

- Entertainment Weekly honors the great “Clerks” among their list of the “25 Great 25 Comedies in the Past 25 Years”. The film is among some great company, with “Ghostbusters” at #1 and two Seth Rogen flicks also among the winners.
21. CLERKS
With its cruddy lensing and sound, Kevin Smith’s way-low-budget debut feels like a bootleg copy of an adolescent mind.
- The Onion’s AV Club features a new interview with the hilarious Craig Robinson, which includes these two questions about “Zack and Miri” :
AVC: You were in Zack And Miri Do A Porno with Seth Rogen. You’ve both worked extensively with Judd Apatow, who is famous for encouraging improvisation, where Kevin Smith is known for discouraging ad-libbing. Did Smith allow improvisation on Zack?
CR: Definitely. This was supposed to be the first movie he did that on. He just told us to go for it, to do our thing. I wouldn’t have guessed that he’d ever discouraged improvisation, but I guess he’s just used to doing scenes down to the letter. He was very encouraging about doing improv at this particular time.
AVC: Were there any particular improvisations you were especially proud of?
CR: There were a couple of things. Tisha Campbell came out with both guns blazing. She was going off. She was totally off-book, so I just had to catch up with her and go with her toe-to-toe. Kevin’s direction was that at first I was kind of stunned, but then I think, “Are you going to take that?” So I’m like, “Oh yeah, here we go.” Then the titty auditions, that was all improv. Kevin just told us to start here, then end up somewhere else.

- Hustler Magazine’s March 2009 issue took the now iconic stick figure U.S. poster artwork for “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and lampooned it in their latest issue with their own comedic take. Hit the thummnail for a NSFW look. We’re not sure if the tagline is an attempted dig, but “Porno” actually had quite a bit of onscreen nudity and sex scenes, so we assume it’s just about the ad itself.
- “Zack and Miri” show up in ScrippsNews “Top 10 Film Picks for 2008″ :
7. “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”
Writer/director Kevin Smith found his stroke once again with this riotous and surprisingly heartfelt comic yarn about a platonic couple (Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks) who discover they’re in love while making a nudie flick. The movie encapsulates Smith’s heedless joy of filmmaking. - IFC’s feature “The Curious Cameography of Matt Damon” cites the actors brief stints in “Jersey Girl” and “Chasing Amy” :
“Jersey Girl” (2004)Continuing his streak of playing #2s, Damon reunited with his “Dogma” director Kevin Smith for a bit of déjà vu. Shortly before he became a household name with “Good Will Hunting,” Damon took a minor role in “Chasing Amy” as “Shawn Oran – Executive #2,” an MTV producer who tries to lure Holden and Banky (Ben Affleck and Jason Lee) to adapt their comic book for TV. In “Jersey Girl,” Lee and Damon sit across from Affleck’s Ollie Trinke as PR execs #1 and #2, respectively, who interview Trinke for a job. Smith laments on the DVD commentary, “You don’t know how disheartening it is to be at a test screening and get cards back where like ’scene liked most: Jason Lee and Matt Damon’ because you’re like dude, they were in the movie for a minute.”
- We like this brief essay on the “Clerks” cartoon by a scooper analysing ABC’s penchant for promoting new shows (when looking at the recent news of a “Fables” animated series on the network):
The “Clerks: The Animated Series” scenarioThis is by far the most depressing of the three scenarios. The network might initially give support to the show in the conceptual phase even though they’re not entirely sold on it. Once the show has got a few episodes in the can, the network executives will balk at the prospect of giving it even the tiniest bit of support.
This has happened many times before with other shows, I’m certain, but there is one particularly ugly example that comes to mind for me. I’m sure a lot of you are familiar with movie writer/director Kevin Smith. Back in the early part of the decade he was approached by ABC to have his very first film, “Clerks”, translated into an animated series. Even though Kevin’s involvement with the project was minimal compared to that of his films the project looked good on paper. It had Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson & Jason Mewes reprising their roles as Dante, Randal & Jay, so what could go wrong? Everything!
First of all, the often vulgar “Clerks” was a concept that was not at all compatible with ABC, which is owned by Disney. If it had been optioned by a cable network like Comedy Central or Cartoon Network there was a chance it would have translated quite well to the small screen. Even the Fox network could have made it work, given their success with shows like “The Simpsons” & “Family Guy”. But because ABC took it on the show’s producers attempted to transform “Clerks” into something it definitely wasn’t: a normal animated sitcom. It ended up being such a watered-down version of the source material that it turned off a lot of Kevin Smith’s normally loyal and forgiving fanbase (myself included) and viewers unfamiliar with Smith’s other work just didn’t connect with it.
It doesn’t help that ABC seemed to revel in making a bad situation worse. It delayed the premiere of the series from early Spring to Summer, then it made the decision to air the fourth episode of the series as the pilot episode. The network then aired the second episode, which was a “flashback” episode with the flashback sequences referring almost solely to what was intended to be the first episode. With seemingly the entire deck stacked against it, “Clerks: The Animated Series” was cancelled after merely two out of the six completed episodes having aired.

Final specs should be on the way to our inbox any day now, so stay tuned for the full announcement. Both Amazon’s US and Canada sites are also confirming this date. Above is a version of the “coservative” art for the disc, indicating that they may actually release two different covers for the disc, one using the word “porno” and one without it. That’s a first. Now we just need a press release…

One of our scoopers took a moment to YouTube the two clips together, featuring Affleck’s after-school special freak out and Lee chatting about superheros and bulk. - With Amazon now listing a February 3rd arrival, it sure looks like a very likely final release date for “Zack And Miri”, putting the movie just a month away from joining the ranks on our shelves. We’re expecting final specs on the disc’s extras any day now, and are hoping to get our grubby little mitts on an advanced copy so we can get an early look up for ya. Stay tuned.
- Anyone heard of the flick “Alien Sex Party”? Funded by the musician Moby, the flick is basically “Clerks” in a porn shop, and evidenced by this scene at Youtube, it’s FULL of very blatant homages to our beloved convenience store classic. Look for a very familiar face behind the counter. We may have mentioned this way back in the day (the film has a 2003 release date) but we don’t recall ever seeing this clip, so check it out if you missed it as well.
- Just a final note — We’re just starting to listen to today’s SModcast, but we did want to remind you it’s up over at QSE – We’ll give a story and a brief rundown tomorrow once we’ve screened it. See ya soon…
“Clerks 2″ Blu-ray Moves, “Zack And Miri” Stay Put?
- A scooper writes us to let us know that the “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” DVD and Bluray release is listed at February 10th in the internal Blockbuster computers, and that he’s never seen them get a release date wrong. So, pretty strong evidence that we’ll see the disc on that day, even though we have yet to see a final confirmation.
Meanwhile, check out a look at this DVD cover for “Porno” that was discovered on the Amazon.com servers. This likely means we’ll see a confirmed date and some real specs on the disc’s contents soon. The cover looks like a newly composed shot to feature the entire cast, and doesn’t match any of the previous poster artwork that we’ve seen. We like it, though. The only item giving us pause is the news that the Bluray release of “Clerks 2″ has been bumped up a week to February 3rd:
The Weinstein Company has officially announced the Blu-ray release of Kevin Smith’s ‘Clerks II’, which is due to hit store shelves on February 3rd. Originally scheduled for a February 10th release, this two disc set will feature all the extras from the previous HD DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time.
Typically, studios like to release similar titles on the same day, so if you’re going to the store to pick up one, you’ll get both — So PERHAPS “Porno” will also bump up a week. We’ll let ya know as soon as we know.

- Kevin gives a brief new interview to Atomic Comics to promote the “Batman: Cacophony” project, which is now shipping issue #2. Here’s a snippet from the piece on the status:
AC – Are all three issues of Cacophony in the box already?KS – Yeah. Issue Two ships this week. And Walt is on the last three pages of Issue Three’s pencils, so that’ll ship on time, too. I learned my lesson: no more lateness for me. No more announcements until at least 2/3 of the scripts are in.
- “Zack And Miri” appear among other films in Zap2It’s list “From Sewer to Success” which features movies and TV shows where characters had to work from nothing to get somewhere.
