Wal-Mart Says NO To “Porno” But Reveals More…

January 31st @ 11:15 pm | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Chuck K, Alonso Duralde, Laura Conohan

  • A few weeks ago, we reported that “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” was indeed being produced with a watered-down “Zack and Miri” cover as an option for some retailers. Target stores took them up on this alternate cover, so it came as no surprise to us when word arrived that Walmart would follow suit (making the full titled cover, available signed from the Secret Stash online, all the more rare). Several websites have picked up the story, including The Record, The Toronto Star and Canoe (all Canadian-based publications, by the way).

What we like about the story is that Kevin gives several new quotes on the alternate cover and the Walmart decision and makes a heck of a lot of sense. After all, why not market what the film is, not selling it to people who will see the title (and cover) and not know what they’re in for? Among other things, Kevin once again confirms that the Askewniverse is closed (along with Jay & Bob), and drops a VERY interesting tidbit about some offers he may have regarding new gigs:

“‘Zack and Miri’ did some weird things for my career in as much as I guess lots of folks at different studios finally considered it a like, movie-enough movie, where they could be like, ‘Hey, would you like to direct movies for us?”‘ said Smith, who made his first film, “Clerks,” for just US$27,575 in his home state of New Jersey.

All Canadian releases of the disc will feature the complete title.

So, whatcha think about these new directing gigs that might be coming across Kevin’s desk, eh? We’re certainly intrigued. 2009 could shape up to be an even more interesting year…

  • Just a brief word on the “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” extra special extras from Blockbuster - Our source tells us that even purchasing a copy of the film there won’t get you that extra feature Kevin recently mentioned. You can ONLY find it on their RENTAL copies. No word yet on this will include the rental copies you get from their online service. Sad, too, as part one of the improv battle with Rogen and Long is a true highlight. You’ll see. It will be worth seeking out a rental copy from Blockbuster to rent (and maybe eventually own) just for this segement.
  • Nerve blogs “The Screengrab” feature cites “Clerks” (along with Kevin’s inspirational love “Slacker”) among their favorite Sundance festival films of all time. (Editor’s note: I lost the scooper on this by accident, drop me a line and I’ll get your credit added).
  • Malcolm Ingram takes the Mosier chair on SModcast #74, which has been up at Quick Stop Entertainment this week and just hit iTunes tonight. As Malc is a longtime Askew associate as well as a Canadian, maybe you’ll see Malc with Kev up in Canada next week, too. As we make our way thru the ‘cast now, they’re discussing a painful pickle jar incident they’re watching as part of an online video. Ah, SModcast! As always, this free entertainment is available exclusively over at QSE for MP3 download at any time. This week’s simple logline:

SModcast 74: Rurally Gay - In which proctology is discussed at length.

  • Check back with us a little later this weekend for our EXCLUSIVE in-depth look at next week’s DVD/Bluray arrival of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”…And enjoy the Superbowl!

  • Anyone catch the (unintentional or intentional?) reference to “Clerks 2″ during “American Dad” on Fox? Check out the Youtube clip and see what we mean. Either we’ve got a big fan on the writer’s team, or an amazing coincidence (we’re leaning towards the former).
  • It’s not online (unless someone figures out a way to capture it), but the ON-DEMAND service (which many cable companies carry these days) has a new “Fanboys” feature under their “New Movies” banner - They’ve got a couple of deleted scenes from the film, one of which features Kevin Smith and Jay Mewes. If anyone sees this scene on the web, let us know — In the meantime, look for it on your “On Demand” systems (From the look of it, I don’t believe DirecTV carries this type of OD stuff, not yet, anyway).
  • Last update, we reported that there might be some trouble for Seth Rogen’s “Green Hornet” — Turns out, reports of the film’s death were premature. Defamer has the update, revealing that the project is still quite alive, and the search for a new director is on. Seth says:

“‘The Green Hornet’ has many people working for it, including production designers, costume designers and many conceptual artists, office staff, etc.,” he said during our e-mail exchange back and forth. “[The studio heads] have every intention on making it, and assuming we’re able to hire a new director in the upcoming weeks, which seems like a distinct possibilty, it should still hit the release date.”

  • The immortal “Clerks” animated series hits #98 in IGN’s list of the Top 100 Animated Series of all time:

In some ways this is the Firefly of animated series — aired out of order and then quickly discarded by a network that didn’t feel it fit with their programming. Only six episodes were produced, and only two of them aired, but there was a lot of very funny material in Kevin Smith’s adaptation of his own film. A rather brilliant second episode parodied that old television staple, with the characters trapped together, reminiscing on past events — only here, with only one episode having been produced, all of their memories are of that previous week’s events… before things get really hysterical and surreal. Starring the entire main cast of the Clerks films, not to mention Alec Baldwin as the Lex Luthorish Leonardo Leonardo, Clerks was able to do a lot more broad comedy and parodies than the films, with episodes evoking everything from Fast Times at Ridgemont High to the unfortunate results of a Transformer transforming with a person inside him.

Ah “Clerks: TAS”, we hardly knew ye. If only we could get more of this gem. If you haven’t watched your DVD of these in a while, do it again sometime soon. They hold up amazingly well and are funny as ever.

  • The “Pillow Pants” gag from “Clerks II” gets a shout-out in The Big Book of Spam Digest #1 which collects e-mail spam subject lines and comments on them. Says our scooper:

The spam subject line “Make your pants dragon huge and rock hard” earns the sarcastic response “Is a pants dragon anything like a pussy troll? (Look it up.)”. It’s on page 8 of the free preview and page 34 of the full book.

  • We’re told that you can add Target to the growing list of stores that will carry the edited cover/titled “Zack and Miri” version of the DVD next week. As always, ordering a signed copy direct from us is the right way to go (after all, why wouldn’t you want your DVD cover signed?)
  • We like to keep track of what writer/director Richard Kelly is up to, due to Kevin’s involvement with “Southland Tales” and “Donnie Darko” — Kelly’s next project hitting theaters is a writing gig he did for the upcoming Nic Cage flick “Knowing”, about an unearthed time capsule that predicts all the Earth’s disastrous events (past and future). Check out a trailer over at the official site.

  • “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” starts playing in the Netherlands tomorrow, and once again, the country is not disappointing in the promotions department — This time, a contest is being held to actually create your own “sexy adult video”. Talk about a distributor who knows how to go all the way when marketing a flick, huh? If you win, you get to make an actual adult video, directed by Monique Sluyter. Crazy stuff going on over there.
  • And of course, don’t forget SModcast, which has been going strong with a DOUBLE episode treat this week. First off, number 73 in the series:

      SModcast 73: Irma-licious -

In which Buddy has a bad day and our heroes are beside themselves at the news… until the Quickening kicks in.

Quick Stop Entertainment is your only spot in the whole Internet world where you can nab the great SModcast, so get over there and get your copy in MP3 format. THEN, listen to the immediate BONUS SEQUEL, SModcast 73.5:

Enjoy this double-shot of SModcast, with thanks to the guys for their continued weekly dose of audio entertainment! Catch ya back here soon…

FULL Details on the new “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” DVD/Bluray!

January 17th @ 6:23 am | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin was kind enough to share very specific details on all the goodies showing up when you pop those cherry “Zack and Miri” DVDs and Blurays into your players early next month. Check THIS out:

      - 43 Deleted scenes (totaling 95 minutes)
      - 22 Money Shots Webisodes (50 minutes)
      - Feature-length documentary, Popcorn Porn: Watching Zack & Miri Make A Porno (75 minutes)
      - Comic-con Panel 2008 (23 minutes)
      - Gang-bang: Outtakes & Bloopers (13 minutes)
      - Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy (8 minutes)
      - Blu-ray only: BD Live—which will gives us the option of having downloadable bonus features at some time in the future

Totaling 4 hours and 21 minutes of bonus

Full disclosure: The extra feature - Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy (8 minutes) is only one of two parts. Due to Weinstein Co’s exclusive deal with Blockbuster, there’s a Blockbuster-Exclusive Extra Feature called “Seth vs. Justin: Battle for Improvisational Supremacy Pt. 2.” So if you’re a BlockBuster cat, there’s that. I have no control over these things.

Here’s some general comments from Kevin in response to WWWBoard queries on the disc.

On a single vs. double disc DVD: “I was informed it couldn’t be one disc and have all the material we wanted on it - at least according to the folks at Weinstein Co./Genius Home Video.”

On the extras: “There’s well over an hour of extra footage. The doc itself is an hour. I don’t know what the “Money Shots” combined are, but it’s a bunch. Then there’s the flick, the San Diego ComiCon Q&A, behind-the-scenes featurettes. This DVD has, essentially, all the elements that all of our DVDs have had, except a commentary track and intros.”

See Kevin’s post for more details on his feelings on the lack of a commentary track this time around.

Finally, in his post Kevin also shared the absolutely fantastic Hong Kong poster for the film, which he would have loved as the Bluray DVD’s cover (but would have gotten sued over it). Check this work of art out.

“Zack and Miri Make a Porno” hits DVD and Bluray on Tuesday, February 3rd.

  • Kevin reports that around 300 of the 2400 seats for the February 6th appearance in Toronto are STILL AVAILABLE. They may be gone by the time you read this. Buy now, as this show, like the February 7th show, WILL SELL OUT. Kevin also hints that there’s more events coming in Toronto too, but hasn’t said more at this time. No worries on going both nights either, as every Kevin show is different. With houses packed that full, these shows will be a total blast and a new record 2-day attendance - Don’t miss out.
  • Moviefone lists “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” among their “50 Best Movies of 2008″ :
“Pairing director Kevin Smith and Seth Rogen was either going to result in something wildly overrated or sheer genius, and it wound up being the latter. “
  • Kevin scores a quick mention in JoBlo’s “Requiem for Nachos” web comic this week.
  • Not only is she beautiful, but she’s also very funny and charming - Elizabeth Banks is Myspace’s “Featured Icon” for a limited time, and recorded a nice little video to go along with it. Check it out along with some photos and more. She’s also the subject of a new article at the Boston Herald website.
  • We’ve seen tons of news on Flying Cars lately, so here’s a couple more snips: An American company says they will have units ready for sale in 2010 for around $195,000. Yahoo Cars has a photo as well. But stand down, folks — You’ll still need a pilot’s license to operate one.
  • And don’t forget, tune into NBC Saturday night, as the lovely and talented ROSARIO DAWSON (”Clerks II”) hosts Saturday Night Live for the first time. We can’t wait to see what they’ve come up with for her to do. 11:30 PM EST/PST on NBC. For now, it’s BATTLESTAR GALACTICA time as SciFi spins the first of the 10 final episodes tonight. “Giddy” can’t even begin to describe our excitement. Later!

2-Disc “Porno” DVD Features Feature Doc, Deleted Scenes, & Bloopers…

January 12th @ 9:07 pm | 2 Comments » | Scooped by Ming, Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s confirmed via a WWWBoard post today that the upcoming (February 3, 2008) “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” DVD will feature the following goodies:

    • A bunch of deleted and extended scenes
    • The full length documentary by Zak and Joey (last we heard, titled “Popcorn Porn”
    • All of the “Money Shots” promo videos (uncensored, we assume with never before seen episodes that didn’t make the web)
    • A blooper reel

The standard DVD set’s running 2 discs, so likely you’ll get the film on one, and the doc on the other. Of course, the Bluray will have everything on one easy place due to the massive storage capacity.

The one massive omission here is an audio commentary track, we believe the first time it’s missing on a View Askew DVD. Kevin states an interest in using SModcast to record such a track that will run along with the film, so watch for it. Lucky Bluray owners should also be able to embed future tracks released automatically into the disc.

We’ll cross our fingers for an early copy so we can hook ya up with all the other secrets and details on what’s sure to be another gem on your DVD shelves next month.

  • It looks like Walmart is one of those places that will be selling the DVDs with just “Zack and Miri” as the title. Watch out, stay away — Make sure you wait for our official copies with the CORRECT title on there! Beware the watered-down cover art come February 3rd! The signed Stash copies will be 100% “Make a Porno” versions. Pricing and release info soon.
  • Australian fans will finally see “Zack and Miri” make their porno on screens in the middle of February, but confirmation just came in — You’re also getting the uncensored Canadian/international one-sheet and not the stick figure poster (which now seems to have been almost a U.S. exclusive).
  • Buddy Christ spotting! A new youth church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota seems like they’ve adopted the mascot if you look at the screengrab from this article on the place. The place blasts music and runs promotions like taking 50 cents off each gallon of gas at a local gas station. Sounds like a message we can easily get behind.
  • Kevin reports that the Monday SModcast was slightly delayed today but is being mastered together as we speak (at presstime). By the time you’re reading this, the new episode (#72) may be online, so surf your butt on over to Quick Stop Entertainment and look up — After all, you’re now officially done reading News Askew for today. Catch ya next time.

Official “Zack and Miri” DVD Art Reveals 2-Disc Edition!

January 11th @ 12:52 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Nick Aderholdt

  • We’ve seen the disc art in various forms, but now it looks very official with these new high-res shots. DVDActive reveals, via these new exclusive shots, that “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” will arrive February 3rd on Bluray, which we knew, but that the standard DVD edition will indeed be TWO DISCS.

We don’t have any official details on extras yet, but this makes us almost certain that we will indeed see the feature-length documentary from Chop Shop Entertainment on this set, along with (we hope) a commentary track, all the deleted scenes, and more. Frankly, we’ll be totally amazed if they’ve managed to assemble all this stuff, but considering Kevin and Scott’s talent for keeping DVD in mind right from the start, they also make it easier than some other filmmakers.

View Askew has always been the reigning king of special edition DVDs, so we’re betting this release will continue that tradition. Fans still regret that a director’s cut packed disc for “Jersey Girl” never arrived after the small low key release. We think the guys are gonna go full blast for the initial “Porno” arrival in just a few weeks. We expect full specs any day now. And we expect good news.
