SModcast 81: Satan’s Dookie. -
In which our heroes throw their support behind the controversial PreCrime Bureau.

- “Clerks” shows up in Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch Quote of the Day today:
”All those innocent contractors brought in to do the job were killed — casualties of a war they had nothing to do with. All right, look: you’re a roofer, some juicy government contract comes your way. You got a wife and kids, the two-story in suburbia. This is a government contract, which means all sorts of benefits. Along come these left-wing militants that blast everything within a three-mile radius with their lasers. You didn’t ask for that. You have no personal politics. You’re just trying to scrape out a living.” — Randal (Jeff Anderson), on why the destruction of the second Death Star was unfair, in Clerks.Surf on over to watch the clip.
- A game design contest at last week’s Game Developers Conference inspired one developer to consider using “Zack & Miri Make a Portal” as his entry. The idea didn’t pan out as licensing two different intellectual properties would have been too cost-prohibitive. Too bad – You know you’d have played.
- Director David Wain has some nice things to say about “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” and Elizabeth Banks on his commentary track for the recently released “Role Models”:
“It [Role Models] came out the same time as Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which is, to me, a wonderful lead performance from Elizabeth Banks and if you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend it.”We’ve been fans of Wain’s work since way back in “The State” days, so very cool to hear that.
- Pop Culture and movie fansite “Bag of Mad Bastads” catches up with the Bluray release of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and scores the flick a solid BUY IT rating.

- SModcast is taking a week off next week, but will be back with #81, on schedule, next week. Kevin says “Time just got away from us”.
- “Clerks” is trouncing “Mortal Kombat” in Best Week Ever’s March Madness bracket on 90’s movies. They’re having a vote between flicks to
ultimately determine the best movie to represent the 90’s. Surf over HERE and continue voting for “Clerks”, show us some love all the way through the end of the bracket! - Blockbuster’s website reveals that some previously viewed copies of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” may now be on sale, in stores, on DVD. This is significant because this is the only place you can get Part II of the Rogen/Long improv battle. Collectors, take note — And grab them up while ya can. We believe this feature is exclusive to the BB’s DVD version, and not included on BB’s Bluray. Supplies vary, so check your local Blockbuster and ask if you don’t see any on sale shelves.

- We’re kicking off the ‘bites today with a bunch of video for you to enjoy. First up, Kevin’s interview with Lee Stranhan continues this week with Part 4 today, titled “The Dark Side of the Internet”. In this clip, Kevin discusses reading fan/critic reviews and comments on the web. Once again, this series remains exclusive to YouTube.
We’re told, by the way, the interview is planned to run at least 7 or 8 segments, so we’re only halfway there. Search our archives if you missed any of it — Our plan will be to write an all-inclusive post of the segments once the saga is complete, also. For now, check out Stranahan’s YouTube page for previous segments and other examples of his work. - Next, Corey Taylor of the (Grammy-winning) hardcore metal band, Slipknot, wants to write a song specifically for a Kevin Smith movie. Last month, he listed writing a song for a Smith flick as one of his all-time goals to achieve. Check out the video from this recent interview with WJRR radio (click the “His Influences” link and hang in ’til the end).
- And in our final video of the day, Jason Mewes discusses adversity and redemption with “The Hour”’s George Stroumboulopoulos. This was recorded last month during his trip up to Canada. The clip runs around 13 minutes in length and features the dude in quite a fashionable cap.
- Up-and-coming rap artist Kid Cudi, who was signed by Kanye West’s music label, had a few kind words for “Zack and Miri” in a recent blog post. Apparently he watched the film during a recent plane trip.
- “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” is headed to DVD in Australia, and we’ve got the box art right here! Looks like folks there are going to get the awesome, uncensored Star Wars parody cover, along with all the region one extras on this 2-disc set. Nicely done — And certainly something you collectors may want to pick up as well.

- We’re just a now a week away from “Watchmen”, the most acclaimed graphic novel of all time, coming to theaters everywhere. A new article from CNN and Entertainment Weekly, “Will Anyone Watch the Watchmen?” once again features a quote from Kevin, a big fan and supporter of the film. It’s the same quote we’ve seen around before, but the full article is new, and worth a read. We do warn ya though, as the story of the film is widely known, there are some minor plot spoilers there for those who have yet to read the novel.
- Through Wednesday, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” continues to enjoy a nice $7,880 per screen average in Australia, with the cume now close to 1.1 million after only a week in theaters. A very nice showing so far!
- The immortal Shannon Hamilton (played by an early-career Ben Affleck, of course) takes Filmjunk’s #2 spot on their list of “The Top 10 Biggest Movie Douchebags”:
2. Shannon Hamilton from MallratsWith a shitty attitude, a pretty boy mug and a propensity for combining backdoor sex with New Kids on the Block lyrics, there are few douches that can touch Shannon Hamilton. Played by Ben Affleck — no stranger to douchebaggery himself during his J-Lo phase — Shannon has the lofty position of being a manager of an upscale men’s clothing boutique in a Jersey outlet mall. Arrogant, smarmy and trying desperately to force overpriced slacks on people, Shannon is a classic big screen tit, the kind of douche who’d stoop to almost any level to try and screw your girlfriend in an uncomfortable place — and no, we ain’t talking about the back of a Volkswagen.
Take a look at the whole article, and you’ll see he’s among some other fantastic memorable movie characters, including Burke from “Aliens” and Walter Peck in “Ghostbusters”.
- An article titled “7 Celebrity Careers That Launched by Accident” sportlights Rosario Dawson’s start in the #4 spot.

- During Sunday night’s Oscars, TMZ seems to have had Jay & Silent Bob on their minds when they looked at the choice of headwear for Philip Seymour Hoffman, as evidenced by their headline and this photo.
- Jamie Sanford kindly shares a link to her photo set from Kevin’s recent appearance at the Bergen Performing Arts Center. She’s got some nice shots of the man onstage for the show. Click on and enjoy the rest.
- In its opening weekend in Australia, “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” took in a respectable $755,910 and a very healthy $5,815 per screen average. Thanks to all the fans who went to check out the film once it finally hit your neck of the woods. A high resolution version of the Aussie poster crossed the news desk today, so we’ve got that included here as well. Quite similar to the Canadian poster, except for the ratings stuff.
- Buddy Christ spotting – We’re not sure what this dude is doing with a bunch of zombies, but there’s a great fan for ya. See ya next time!

- Webmaster Harry Knowles has two kind shout outs for his latest DVD picks column for the month, over at Aint It Cool News:
ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNOThe title was ZACK AND MIRI in the copy I bought at Target – but on AMAZON they seem to have the full title. Or is that an outdated graphic? I don’t know, but god damn this is a funny movie. Though upon reflection of the Blu Ray… I found myself wondering… Is it just me, or does the film feel awfully short. I never really look at running times on films. I just don’t obsess on that sort of thing, but I really wanted a longer film here. I think it is that I loved these characters and wanted to spend more time with them. Kevin done good.
CLERKS II (Blu Ray)
I know most people tend to feel CHASING AMY is Kevin’s best film, but honestly… I love CLERKS II. It is just fucking great. Rosario? OHMYGOD! She’s just the girl you must love. And PILLOW PANTS? Genius.
- “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” takes the “Best Porn Star Gone Hollywood” award, the very first one in the list, in Mr. Skin’s 2008 Anatomy Awards. The entire list is quite good, though you’ll need a Mr. Skin membership to view any actual “evidence” of the winners. The website specializes in specific tracking of nudity in film and TV.
- It’s hard to believe that “Watchmen” is just two weeks away from theaters. Wow. Entertainment Weekly cites Kevin’s excitement (even though he’s seen an early cut) for this one to arrive:
Behind the stage, indie-movie icon Kevin Smith, a.k.a. the Most Famous Fanboy in the World, parks himself in front of a closed-circuit TV, a happy grin on his bearded mug. ”You have to understand, I’ve been waiting for this moment for years,” says Smith. ”This is it, man. This is the pinnacle. You have no idea how f—ing pumped I am.”We’ll be there opening day. And probably again on Saturday. Clear your schedules to see “Watchmen” the weekend of March 6th. Trust us.
- Filmgoer Pete sends us a scan of his ticket stub, proof positive that “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” is now playing everywhere in Australia!
- Catch comedian Joshua Sankey, who recently resurfaced in a funny “Zack and Miri” deleted scene, debuting a brand new act this Saturday, February 28th, at Broadway Comedy Club (Downstairs Room) in NYC.
- Keep your eyes on Quick Stop Entertainment, as Kevin confirms that he and Scott recorded a new episode which should debut TONIGHT (Sunday) at some point. Episode #77 is what you’re looking for.
- Enjoy the Oscars tonight — 2009 was a cool year for flicks, dramas especially, a lot of great performances and films in the running. Should be a good show.
The “Zack & Miri” Stick Flash Game!
- Australia continues to be one of the friendliest countries when it comes to promotion of View Askew releases, with a few more tidbits in the news today.
First up, this flash-based game is NOT safe for work, visually and especially with the audio, but it sure is fun. It’s a stick-figure sex game based on the drawings from the U.S. poster for the film. You just gotta go give it a try.In the press, following in the footsteps of the U.S. battle against censorship, The Age runs a nice article that summarizes the battle to get the film out intact stateside, though it didn’t face any new challenges for cuts in Australia. We believe these are quotes are from a new interview since they’re listed as chatting with AAP. The info is similar to what we’ve seen before, but it’s always nice to see a new interview and new quotes, like this one:
“…Just before filming was set to begin, Rogen was coming off worldwide promotional trips for Knocked Up and Superbad.
“Seth wrote me an email that said ‘I always wanted to work with you, I don’t want to work with you under these circumstances where I’m exhausted. I just want to sit on my couch, play video games and get high for three months’,” Smith chuckled.
“I was like ‘Can’t argue with that’.”

- Due to the reschedule, we’re hearing that there MIGHT be a handful of tickets left for Kevin’s appearance, now scheduled for February 21st, at the Bergen Performing Arts Center – The show happens THIS SATURDAY at 8 PM. Jersey based shows are always fantastic with a great crew on hand to enjoy, so if you’re in the area, it’s worth the trip. Visit the Bergen’s website and look up the event to purchase any available tickets that may be left. Don’t delay, as we have a feeling these are gonna go fast now that the open seats have been freed up.
- Kevin capped off Toronto week with an appearance in Ohio late last week, and we’ve got photos to prove it. Fans report another crazy evening, which even included a sign language translator whom Kevin enjoyed messing with a little bit. Click above for a few angles on the evening, with thanks to Jana for the snaps!
- Here’s a quick blurb from the Edmonton Sun involving a few quotes from Kevin on working with the hilarious Seth Rogen:
“He’s a good guy,” Smith tells Sun Media. “And he does amazing work. Seth is a really strong actor — period! — and not just a strong comedic actor. He really holds his own against her (Elizabeth Banks as Miri) and drama is her forte, that’s for sure. You buy that relationship. They did a fantastic job.“So he’s the goods, man. He’s going to be around forever because he’s truly, truly talented and not a flash in the pan.”
- Traci Lords tells Monsters and Critics that she thinks “the dirtiest thing about “Zack and Miri” is the title” in this brand new interview celebrating the DVD release.
- Monsters and Critics completes their hat trick of interviews from the “Porno” DVD with a new one with Jeff Anderson, too. Here’s a couple choice passages:
“…I do not know how to skate, which is always an issue, every one of Kevin’s movies I’m like “Damn, hockey again?” I should just learn how to skate but that’s not bad because Seth is from Canada and Seth couldn’t skate.…
“…That’s always the biggest thing, it’s always amazing to me the amount of trailers and the amount of trucks and everything else, but doing this, Zach and Miri, like the actual movie and those guys making the porno has a lot of the elements that we did on the actual Clerks like the hockey stick as a boom that’s what we really did for Clerks.
So it was kind of weird being here, yes the scale was bigger, but when you’re on set it’s almost like being on set of Clerks. So even though the scale grows and you walk around and you see the trucks, you’re staying at nice hotels, when you get to set it always feels like you’re going back to the same set. So yes it feels bigger but no it doesn’t, if that’s an answer.

- Kevin’s a guest columnist for a full page photo and story in the latest issue of Fade In magazine. He wrote the fun bulleted list style piece, titled “What You Don’t Know About Hollywood”. Click the pic for a look.
- The popular DVD board game “Scene It?” now has a revamped 2nd movie edition. While there are no View Askew movie clips to enjoy, one of the trivia cards bears the following question:
What 2006 movie features characters named Dante and Randall, who work in a fast food establishment called Moobys?
- Kevin is Featured in Total Film magazine’s “7 Weird Ways to Fund a Low Budget Movie”:
2. Put it all on credit cardsThe Film: Clerks
The Filmmaker: Kevin Smith
The Story: “I put the $25,000 budget on my credit cards,” recalls Smith. “Everything but American Express, because they make you pay it at the end of the month.”
Smith used family loans and leveraged his income to help pay for the black & white movie, which he shot in and around the shop he already worked as a perfect free location.
The Warning: If you run up a huge debt, the closest you’ll get to “blockbuster” status is working there to pay it off.
- Via a recent e-newsletter, comedian Joshua Sankey reveals that it’s him sharing the screen in that deleted scene from “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” where Craig Robinson attempts to buy his big screen TV:
“…I made the deleted scenes on the DVD of the hilarious Kevin Smith film “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” starring Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks! My scene got cut from the theatrical release but thanks to today’s technological advances you can see me in Scene 12 “Delaney’s Flatscreen” on the Deleted Scenes menu. Check it out. It’s a cool scene with the hilarious Craig Robinson from The Office, Knocked Up and Pineapple Express. Working with Kevin and Craig was definitely the highlight of my comedy career! So buy the DVD, as the movie is funny and sweet and there’s a whole bunch of extras!” - The Clerks: TAS custom Wii case, which we believe was a gift to Kevin a few years back, is again revleaed in this Unreality Magzine article on Wii case modifications. It’s very cool to see this again, along with what some other artists have done.
- “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” opens across Australia this weekend, though early figures show a $58,570 take from just a single screening at select theaters last weekend. We’ll keep you posted on news from Australia and across the world as the international release takes place.
- More of the ‘Bites are coming your way later today! See you back here soon.

- Toronto news picked up on a comment Kevin made regarding the Michael Phelps pot scandal following the “Clerks II” screening at the Bloor Cinema earlier this week. Our favorite bit:
“I say, put him on more cereal boxes,” said Smith, eliciting cheers and claps from his audience.“That’s what we like to eat when we’re high.”
- The lovely and bubbly Katie Morgan chats with Bullz-Eye about “Zack and Miri” and other projects, where she reveals she’d love to participate in an upcoming “Vulgarthon” should Kevin decide to hold one — Which we think is excuse enough to schedule another one as soon as possible. Check out the clip:
BE: No, but you’re still now within the world of Kevin Smith. So are you ready to attend a Vulgarthon?KM: Oh, lord, yes. And anything they’ll have me for. I’d do anything that man asked me to. (Laughs)
- Aspiring director Casey Walker runs a site called “My Million Dollar Movie” where he is attempting to raise funds to make his first flick, and blogging about the experience. In a recent entry, he cites that Kevin made a small donation to his cause when questioned during the “Dogma” screening in Toronto earlier this week. We wish Casey luck with his project.
- Kevin’s in a full page photo and story in the latest issue of “Fade In” magazine. We don’t have a copy, so if anyone’s got scans they can share with us, hook some brothers up!
- Taking a cue from “Dogma” perhaps, the Catholic church is offering plenary indulgences, according to a New York Times report.
