The Bateman Saga…

September 13th @ 6:52 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • The saga of Jason Bateman takes front and center in the latest blog update from Kevin — And we’re a part of the thing. To give a bit of background — With us being the official news site of View Askew, we very rarely have to go to the boss before going to press with an item. It’s probably happened less than five times in the past ten years. And, the only time that we do this is when we feel breaking a story early could have a negative impact on a View Askew project. In the case of casting, for example, at times deals can break down simply because an internet rumor blows things out of control. Believe it. And with the amount of ears and great scoopers out there, it’s going to happen once a in a great while. Something’s going to slip WAY earlier than intended, and it’s going to sour a deal. So, when we hear of a potentially COOL casting, we don’t wanna ruin anything by putting something out there that just, well, shouldn’t be. Also, with our official nature, folks tend to believe the stuff we run here. So, not only do we check our sources, but we sometimes go to the MAIN sources — Because we’ve got that kind of access, thankfully.

In the case of Jason Bateman, we were sent a scoop via a thoughtful reader who swore he had the casting verified. However, since it seemed so out of left field, we first wanted to see if we were on to something, then, wanted to see if it was going to hurt anything by posting it if we WERE. We can assure you, were the rumor true that Bateman was cast in “Zack and Miri”, Kevin would absolutely have told us when we could break the scoop - When the time was right, papers were signed, deal done, etc. We run the risk of hurting a great film, and possibly even losing our jobs (and this site) in the process when we run stuff that isn’t finalized yet.

Ok, that out of the way, here’s a few bits and pieces from Kevin’s recounting of the Jason Bateman casting rumor, which started with that little e-mail from us and eventually ended up, well, all over the place:

…I never thought to simply say “It’s not true” to anyone but Brad at News Askew. Jason, however, was asked and did have an answer for Peter Sciretta over at SlashFilm. Then, over at Mtv’s Movies Blog, Shawn Adler threw up a link to the SlashFilm article, but it kind of insinuated that Bateman had passed on “Zack and Miri.” So I called Shawn to clear it up and asked him to adjust it on their site.

However, in case folks are still unclear, I’ll second what Bateman said: no, he’s not Zack in “Zack and Miri Make a Porno.” We never asked him and he never read it. He was a great idea for Zack, as Bateman’s a genius who drops performance clinics in even small roles (”Smokin’ Aces”, the upcoming-but-gonna-be-retitled “Quebec”), but like I said: I wrote the role for someone specifically, and that specific someone’s the only guy I’ve ever sent the script to.

As always, see the full blog for more detail on this. Just another tale of how one little rumor can get blown way outta control.

  • Retro alert! You can now view the full video (and audio, of course) for the original Clerks review from Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert via their site archive. Watch for the Ebert praise which caused so many folks to seek the original out back in 1994. It’s a great watch, you can see that Ebert immediately connected with Kevin and the world of View Askew — The late Siskel also heaps similar praise. It’s great to see this online after all these years — A welcome addition to the multimedia archive.
  • Thanks to YouTube, you can now peep out Kevin’s brief appearance on the DVD extras of “Hot Fuzz”. The segment featured is a brief moment from the Q&A session held after an early screening of the film. Seek out Fuzz on DVD now, another inspired entry from this brilliant team. Can’t wait to see what they do next (and secretly hope Kevin might be invited on board for a cameo in it somehow).
  • /film takes another route in confirming that Jason Bateman is not attached to play any roles in “Zack and Miri Make A Porno”, despite rumors that were running rampant otherwise. A couple weeks back, we checked with Kevin and
confirmed that the rumor was just that, and now, the /film guys have briefly spoken with Bateman as well. So, the entire cast of the film, even the desired cast, remain a total mystery. Speculating’s always fun, though — We’ll keep you informed of any whispers going ’round.
  • FREE EARL! The new season of quite possibly the best sitcom on TV right now, “My Name Is Earl”, starts back on NBC soon. Fans of the show recall our hero was left in the slammer at the end of last season — Now, word has it that he’ll remain there for the start of the new one, and NBC’s got a great campgain running to promote it. You can watch the complete “Free Earl” music video (done “We Are The World” style) as well as a web-exclusive “behind-the-scenes” both courtesty of NBC.com. Earl returns to NBC with a 1 hour season premiere on September 27th.
  • Over at his blog, promoting his new film “The Nines”, director John August releases a theatrical podcast commentary which they’re promoting for the film. He does, however, mention that Clerks II did it first (though this likely will be the first time it’s out coinciding with a theatrical release, as the Clerks II track did get pulled and saved for the eventual DVD due to fear of it interfering with audiences). Here’s the entry:

“But in the age of iPods, there’s really no reason why audio commentary has to be relegated to DVD. That’s why Ryan Reynolds and I recorded one last week for The Nines which is now yours to download. (47MB, right-click to save to disk)

This isn’t an original idea, by the way. Kevin Smith recorded an in-theater commentary for Clerks II, though I can’t find confirmation he released it into the wild. (Someone in the comments section will know.)”

  • And finally today, on a light note, with a name like Kevin Smith, you know there’s gonna be others — This “Kevin Smith Show” features a gentleman of that namesake doing a podcast on the paranormal. Enjoy, perhaps between SModcasts? See ya next time!

More Script Progress And Book Info…

  • Kevin posted a couple of new blog entries over the last day covering a variety of topics including Red State, Zack and Miri, and the upcoming release of Kevin’s new book “My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith”. Check out some choice bits here and as always, check out the blogs (Silent Bob Speaks or MySpace) for the full posts…

It’s another barely-leave-the-house kinda day, as I spend the morning checking email, IMing and blogging. My brother calls to talk about “Red State” (I forwarded him a copy as well), and we wind up chatting and bullshitting for three hours. He’s a good guy, my brother.

After that, I spend a majority of the day working on the “Heroes” script in my bedroom office while Harley has another play-date and Jen runs errands.

Wake up to the following email, from Brian Lynch, who I’d sent the “Red State” script the night before.

That was bold. And a great read. Seeing the movie would be a completely different matter, as I think I would watch most of it through my fingers. It would scare the living shit out of me. What a tense, shocking and insanely downbeat time at the movies that would be.

And remember, it’s only about 2 weeks until the release of “My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith”. Reserve your signed copy from the Stash now!

  • MTV.com has a very positive blurb on Zack and Miri in this article on upcoming “raunchy” comedies :
“Zack and Miri Make a Porno”: For years, Kevin Smith has made raunchy movies for his small, niche audience. Now, those sorts of films are opening with $30 million weekends. Could the time finally be right for this Jersey-born master of dialogue to hit the mainstream? Rumor has it that Smith’s twisted “Porno” script is one of the best to ever emerge from his nicotine-fueled imagination, and the timing for a sex-tape comedy couldn’t seem any more appropriate. Smith is currently lining up his cast and will begin shooting soon.
  • And finally today, Kevin shares his opinion on the recent prom. From the sound of it, we might be seeing another event just like this one again! Maybe for you west coasters next time? Here’s the man:
Sorry it’s taken so long to get my thoughts out there on the subject at hand.

I was dreading the Prom for awhile, because I’m not a drinker, and I haven’t danced in twelve years.

That night, I drank and danced.

With booze, anything is possible, I guess.

I had a blast. I agree with many of you: this may have been our best event we’ve ever thrown. It was nice to not be on a stage for a change, and instead, be on the floor with everyone else. While it was my birthday party, I never felt like I was the focus; and that was lovely.

Also, it felt like there wasn’t a lick of negativity in the room. Everyone, it seemed, was groovin’ as a collective whole. I dug that.

    And ya’ll looked nice, too.

Many thanks to those who put it together (Jen, Ming, Gail).

Many thanks to all who brought gifts (while it wasn’t necessary, it was very thoughtful).

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to that Saturn-Kitty-covered book (I was truly touched).

Many thanks to those who helped put the decorations together (I’m sorry you were put to work on your vacation, but it was very sweet of you to pitch in).

Many thanks to anyone who was out on the dance floor for “Rock the Bells” (I felt like a teenager again).

We may not have had an elephant, but I never dreamed ringing in my 37th year would’ve been so fun.

Sounds like those of you on the fence won’t want to miss the next chance to attend a View Askew prom! We’ll of course let you know if this becomes an annual event.

  • Kevin and Scott’s weekly podcast, SModcast, made this week’s MUST LIST in Entertainment Weekly magazine. Make sure you subscribe today so you don’t miss any episodes!
  • We love this ad for the Screen Actor’s Guild’s “Sagindie” branch, which appeared recently in MovieMaker Magazine. Click the pic for a closer look. Not only a funny ad, but we’re happy to see that Kevin and View Askew’s influence continues to promote the indie spirit. Yeah!
  • AZCentral posts a short new interview with Kevin, the main topic of which is “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” — However, due to the Rosario involvement in the piece, it may have been conducted a few weeks back. Here’s a snippet or two:

Q: You’ve taken supporting roles in other people’s films - “Catch and Release,” “Live Free or Die Hard.” Is that like a vacation for you?

A: It is kind of a vacation. It’s fun to do. It’s certainly nothing that I would make my primary job. But if stuff comes along and I’ve got the time - and it doesn’t require heavy lifting, because I’m certainly nobody’s actor - I’m all game for it.

Q: “Clerks II” proved there’s still juice left in Jay and Silent Bob (characters played by Jason Mewes and Smith, respectively). Do you think these guys could do a movie in their 50s?

A: I dunno, man. That’d be tough. I always thought it’d interesting somewhere down the road to see how they aged. But I think I’ll just kind of reserve that for if we ever do another “Clerks” look-in on Dante and Randal. Like, people have asked, “Are you going to do ‘Clerks III’?” I’m like, “Maybe not until I’m in my 40s.” Because it would be nice to peek in on those two characters every decade and see how they progress. “Clerks” was in my 20s and “Clerks II” was in my 30s, so maybe “Clerks III” would be in my 40s. Even then, I’m like, “How do you handle Jay and Bob in their 40s?”

  • Big news for you Hollywood Stock Exchange addicts: The stock for “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” went IPO today at a price of $20. Happy trading!
  • Don’t forget, DVD completists and Kevin fans, TMNT is now available for purchase and rental on DVD, featuring a fun cameo from the voice of Kevin Smith himself. Check your local shelves, rental shop, or NetflixM type joint to snag yourself a copy.
  • Mystery Science Theater 3000’s Mike Nelson, Bill Corbett and Kevin Murphy, have released their RiffTrax for The Bourne Identity! Rifftrax continue the MST3K tradition of mocking movies as you watch, through the use of MP3 downloadable files that you sync up with a film’s DVD. Watch a hilarious sample HERE. With the Damon Askew connection and all these MSTie alums on board, this one’s sure to be an instant classic.
  • A scooper caught the brand new, recut Mallrats X verison airing on pay channel “IndiePlex”, one of those ancillary Encore networks you get when you subscribe to premium services. Pretty cool stuff! A quick search over at the Encore site did confirm many upcoming airings of Mallrats on their various stations, but none confirm the version. If anyone knows more, let us know — For those of you who were silly enough to skip buying the extended disc, this could be a great chance to preview all that you’re missing. We’ll let you know if we hear of Mallrats Extended airing anywhere, though encourage you to buy the amazing DVD from the Stash — One of the greatest that View Askew ever produced.
  • For the interested or intrigued, here’s those lego version of Jay and Bob that were spotted on Facebook earlier this week. For some added weekend fun, make your own Lego creations for free online! See ya — Thanks for stopping by News Askew today.

  • Here’s a bit more press on the scheudled Jay Mewes appearance at the Eerie Horror Film Festival, scheduled for October 10-14 in Erie, PA. He’ll be there to support his latesthorror/comedy, “Netherbeast Incorporated”, a humorous film about vampires set in modern day corporate America. Some other cool genre guests on the slate, too.
  • The Quick Stop makes number 5 on OverDugg’s list of top ten filming locations viewed with Google Earth. You may have to skip past an ad to view the actual page.
  • SuperMax hysteria has made it to the UK though at least they’re not reporting it as fact. Once again, let’s let the press know - Kevin’s in no way attached to this! We were all just speculating! Sigh.
  • With all the casting speculation happening, Video ETA runs down a list of possible actors for the role of Zack in Kev’s next flick. See anyone ya like? Got some other ideas? Let us know.
  • We’re not sure who the true author of this article is as we have the same quote on two pieces (unless this is from a press conference), but Seth Rogen recently name-dropped Kevin when discussing his take on “The Green Hornet”
(as Kevin is widely known as having done a draft of the flick at one point). Both Rotten Tomatoes and The Winnipeg Sun have small blurbs on the potential project:

The Green Hornet property was under Kevin Smith’s banner for a long time: the ultimate comic fanboy wrote a script but decided not to direct it. Rogen will not take the opportunity to read Smith’s draft.

“I’m actually friends with Kevin Smith and he said I probably could read it if I wanted. I don’t want to. I have no interest right now in reading it I would say. At some point.”

  • Hey, you can certainly respect the guy for wanting to do his own thing.

  • With the notion of a “Thor” movie out there, this E! Online article mentions talk of an actor near and dear to us as a good possible fit for the title role:

This pretty much has Josh Holloway written all over it,” wrote IceTruckDexter on cinematical.com, while others suggested Matthew McConaughey, Jason Mewes (must be a hair thing), New Zealand-born actor Karl Urban (lately an assassin in The Bourne Supremacy) and, of course, Vincent D’Onofrio, who memorably played a beefy mechanic who was mistaken for Thor in Adventures in Babysitting in 1987.

  • The masters of humor over at “The Onion” give some good-natured ribbing to Ben Affleck today in this spoof report — Kevin’s name is also briefly mentioned.
  • Cinematical ran an article going over Kevin’s response to the nature of casting changes in Hollywood, and mentions his prom and birthday. Nice piece all in all. A quick bit:

According to Smith, Zack and Miri is currently scheduled to begin shooting in January, with pre-production gearing up somewhere around early November. That leaves plenty of time to find a new female lead, and while I adore Dawson just as much as the next guy (I swear, I have dreams about that dance in Clerks 2), there are plenty of other fish in the sea. God, I feel like I’m giving my friend advice after his prom date ditched him at the last minute for a bottle of tequila and a dude with a trust fund. And speaking of proms, Smith also posted a ton of photos from his 37th birthday bash — including pics of his MILF, er, wife, daughter and tons of other partygoers. Happy B-Day Kev, and here’s hoping your belated gift comes in the form of an actress that will totally kill in the role.

Rumor Control: Who’s “Zack”?

August 14th @ 7:15 am | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • A rumor crossed our path over the weekend regarding a potential actor for “Zack and Miri Make A Porno” - The scoop mentioned nothing of this actor playing the lead role, but rather, just playing a part in the film. That actor’s name is Jason Bateman, whose recent memorable turn as Michael Bluth on “Arrested Development” has showcased his great comedic talents. Today, Ain’t It Cool News has added fuel to the fire posting the same rumor, though we’re unsure if this comes from the same source or elsewhere. We tend to check on stuff like this before we post it, hence why you didn’t see it here - As far as we know, this is just not true. Not only is Bateman not currently signed to play Zack, he’s not signed to play any roles at all in the film.

Naturally, we LOVE the idea of the guy being involved in this film or any View Askew project, so that’s not to say this could change — We just wanted to set the record straight as far as what we knew as fact, at the present time. We’ll keep on top of all the latest casting news for you, right here.

  • CinemaBlend picks up the story regarding the Rosario “Miri” departure today, now starting to speculate on who the newcomer MALE lead will be in the film. This will be the first time Kevin will have worked with a set of new-to-Askew leads since “Clerks” and “Mallrats”! Exciting stuff, when you think about it. The possibilities are vast. We’ll of course keep on top of all the rumors and facts and keep things as straight as possible for ya, right here.
  • Hollywood News has a piece on the upcoming UK release of Kevin’s new book, “My Boring-Ass Life: The Uncomfortably Candid Diary of Kevin Smith”. They say:

Legendary independent filmmaker, writer, actor and cultural commentator, Kevin Smith has an international reputation for his hilarious take on the world. Now, he’s ready to share more than ever before, in MY BORING-ASS LIFE: THE UNCOMFORTABLY CANDID DIARY OF KEVIN SMITH.

Lewd, crude and hilariously rude, Kevin Smith pulls no punches in this hard-hitting, in-your-face exposé of, er, his rather dull and uneventful life well, not always dull. In between watching his TiVo, he manages to make and release Clerks II, relate the story of his partner-in-crime Jason Mewes’ heroin addiction, get a tattoo, serve on a jury and get caught stealing donuts from Burt Reynolds.

The book hits everywhere this Fall — Our signed copies from the Stash will be a must-buy, no doubt.

  • Normally we get so much stuff in the News Askew box we’ll skim long articles here and there for what we need - This piece from an L.A. for the Television Critics Association member was so compelling, though, we found ourselves reading the entire rundown. Kevin’s bit, however, comes at the tail end, and follows:

Fortunately, however, I did manage to get at least one photo with a very, very awesome celebrity that wasn’t taken at a TCA-sponsored event, so let’s close with that, shall we…?

Right before I departed for Los Angeles, I read online that Gallery 1988, a small but kick-ass gallery on Melrose Avenue, was to be opening their latest exhibit – “Crazy 4 Cult,” dedicated to artwork inspired by various cult films – while I was in California for the press tour.

TCA Televesion Critics Association 2007 Press TourCool enough, right? Even better, though, was that one of the hosts of the event was to be none other than…wait for it…Kevin Smith (right).

I’d done a phoner with Smith for Bullz-Eye a few months prior, but realizing that this would be a perfect chance to meet him in person, I headed down to the gallery, along with Bullz-Eye’s mighty President and CEO, Gerardo Orlando. (Thanks for the cab fare, G!) Although a TCA function had resulted in us getting to the opening rather late, Smith was indeed still in attendance, so I approached him, introduced myself, and reminded him of our earlier conversation. I really have no idea if he actually remembered me or not, but, hey, he was pleasant in his assurances that he was glad to meet me, and that was enough for me…almost.

Before departing, I figured, what the hell, why not ask the guy if I can get a picture with him? I mean, I’ve got an actual Kevin Smith “inaction figure” in my office at home, and whenever my daughter sees it, she points at it and says, “Daddy!” So, y’know, basically, I’m thinking the effect of seeing a photo of Kevin Smith and me standing side by side ought to be downright surreal.

Kev Talks Rosario, Prom, & More…

August 9th @ 8:48 am | 2 Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris

  • Kevin’s provided fans with an extensive post via the online blogs which first addresses the fresh news of Rosario’s scheduling conflict with “Zack and Miri Make A Porno”, as well as a few words (and pictures) regarding the big birthday celebration in Red Bank last week. His words include links to sites reporting on the Rosario sitch, as well (as always) an elegantly crafted response to the news:

How did this happen, you ask?

    Well… it’s kinda my fault.

I wrote “Zack and Miri” with two actors in mind for the respective leads: Rosario, natch, as Miri, and this other guy as Zack. The idea was to shoot it sometime after the first of the year, post “Red State”, but the reaction to the “Zack and Miri” script was so enthusiastic across the boards (from producer Scott Mosier, everyone at the Weinstein Co., the agents and managers of both Rosario as well as the unnamed male lead, Entertainment Weekly), that it got fast-tracked into first position (something that wasn’t hard to do, considering “Red State” wasn’t finished yet). Suddenly, we were looking at an Oct/Nov ‘07 start for “Zack and Miri”.

Then, our prospective male lead needed some time to get some stuff done, so we moved “Zack and Miri” back to a January start - which would mean a late October/early November pre-production start (precluding any pre-”Zack” start for “Red State”). This would’ve mean Rosario would be sitting on her hands all fall, waiting to shoot “Zack and Miri”. And with the impending strike, with actors not knowing if they’re gonna be working at all post-March, that’s a tough request to make of any actor.

Then, along comes “Eagle Eye” - the flick starring man-of-the-moment Shia LeBeouf, to be directed by “Disturbia” helmer D.J. Caruso - based on an original idea by…

    Wait for it…

    Steven fucking Spielberg.

I mean, who wouldn’t take that gig?

Problem is, “Eagle Eye” starts shooting in November and doesn’t wrap ’til Feb/March. Well, that’s not really a problem for anyone… except me and “Zack and Miri”.

So here I sit, momentarily, without a leading lady.

Kevin goes on to explain the many other re-castings over the years, including “Chasing Amy”, “Dogma”, and even “Clerks II”. And we all know just how well that all turned out, don’t we? In fact, we were lucky enough to see Ms. Dawson star in “Clerks II” after a long casting process, so who knows just what gem of an actress that the crew will come up with to replace her — Personally, we can’t wait. It’s another exciting bit of news we’ll have to follow here at News Askew.

Kevin also goes on to explain his love for the week, especially the Q&A and the View Askew prom, which was a MAJOR success:

I’m tellin’ ya, it may sound dopey and queer (meaning odd), but it was a blast. And while we went a bit overboard due to it being my 37th (”37? being the number I built a career on), the whole thing was so successful, we might have to do it every year. There’s simply nothing like being able to put together your own playlist, wearing whatever you wanna wear, or dancing with your wife and kid - all at your a prom you actually want to attend. Fuck high school: late thirties is the new adolescence!

Don’t miss Kevin’s blog post for a TON of pictures and more detail. What a fantastic week in Red Bank. We thank everyone who made it possible, and already eagerly anticipate the Smith clan’s return to the east coast.

Note: Though Michelle Monaghan is being widely reported as cast in “Eagle Eye” today, we’re assuming that there are multiple female roles — So don’t assume that she’s in and Rosario is out. It’s likely that both are in the film. We’ll of course keep you up to date with the latest right here.

Wizard Interview: Smith Talks With Bendis!

  • We’re pleased to present scans (clickable via our cool inline new popup technology) of this new interview from Wizard Magazine. Comics icon Brian Michael Bendis interviews Kevin in this multi-page treat which covers everything from comics to TV to film. Of particular interest, towards the end, Kevin hints about possibly doing a comic book movie following “Red State” and “Zack and Miri” — As we know, projects change all the time, but this is an interesting one. With something special planned for View Askew X (the tenth film Kevin will direct), you never know if THIS will be the comic flick or something entirely different — Though we can’t help but think what a great fit Kevin would be for the Green Arrow unmasked flick “Supermax” which is rumored to star Matt Damon.

Anyway, all that aside, this is one of those interviews that you don’t wanna miss a word of - Just compelling page for page. So enjoy the scans, click away, and read it all. We think you’re gonna dig this one.
