View Askew NewsBites™
- Let’s kick off newsbites today with more good news from the “Zack And Miri” front – Another of the notoriously tough regular reviewers over at supersite Aint It Cool News caught the flick, and showered it with a glowing positive review. Take a peek:
“…having broken free of the desire to do something different than his small little potty mouthed Jersey films, he instead embraced his place in the environs of the film scene and created the single best piece of film he’s turned out since Chasing Amy. Make no mistake, Zack and Miri Make a Porno is every bit Kevin Smith as you’d expect. There are all manner of sex and scat jokes – even the occasional gross out bit. Pop culture references drop out of the mouths of his cast almost as often as expletives. And there are appearances by a number of old favorites, including the ever present Jason Mewes. And yet, by freeing himself of trying to be something that he is not, he has actually managed to elevate the material to make what on the surface appears to be one of the most juvenile attempts at humor this year into something deep, heartfelt and positively adorable.”
Check out the entire non-spoiler review over at Ain’t It Cool News. - Alight Australia, we’ve got good news and bad news — The good news is, we’ve got a release date for “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” for ya. The bad news? It’s January 15, 2009. Okay, so it’s not TOO far off from the US release, but those of you down under will still need to wait a few extra months to see it up on the big screen. No further word on a rating or anything else at this point. We’ll keep ya posted. This is in line with a similar UK planned release date, meaning that North America will have it exclusive for a few months before it branches out.
- The Mid Ohio Comic-Con has announced that Jason Mewes will be in attendance this Sunday, October 5th, from 12-1 PM in Panel Room number two. Mewes is great with the crowds and we bet he’d love to chat up his role in “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”. If you’re in the Ohio area, be sure and stop by for a chance to meet a View Askew legend.
- Film School Rejects say that “Zack And Miri” are the #2 flick that they’re most looking forward to for the remainder of the year. It’s among some nice company, too. Overall, 2008 has been a swell year for flicks, we gotta say. What a great year for a new Kevin Smith View Askew Production!
- And finally today, monkey thieves? Sounds like the plot of a movie near and dear to our hearts’ eh? See ya next time…

The MGM/Weinstein Saga…
- When we ran the story mentioning the removal of the MGM logo from “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”, we figured it was just a slight footnote and a bit of passing news — Little did we know that it would take the web by storm when word got out! Some sites even seem to have taken the completely wrong impression on the news. Let’s take a look at some of that first, then set the record straight.
Popgrind caught wind of the news and erroneously reported that MGM wanted to drop the movie and all association with it, sort of a one-way yanking. Very one sided and just not true. Plus, they said we’re BLOGGING it here. Bloggers? Us? Nah! How dare they. We’re an official news site, darn it!Clearing this up, The Business Sheet runs a piece titled “Did Harvey Weinstein Order A Hit On MGM’s Logo?”, citing our quote along with a humorous photo of Harvey on the phone (calling in the “hit”, we guess). Funny. They have since updated their story with a clarification though, which we’ll run here:
UPDATE: According to an MGM spokesman, who just called us, the studio’s distribution deal with the Weinstein Company will expire at the end of 2008. So, as part of the process of winding down the deal, MGM took all remaining Weinstein Company titles for the year off of their release schedule, including Zack and Miri, and returned the films to Harvey’s headquarters. This move is consistent with MGM’s effort to re-establish itself as a full-fledged studio that produces and distributes its own films.
Other sites are simply picking up news of the split today. Variety (via Mania) runs the piece once again citing “Zack And Miri” along with another flick we’re looking forward to, “The Road”. If nothing else, this gives us even MORE press and continues to fulfill the prophecy that every View Askew release comes with some sort of controversial news story sometime before it hits theaters.
Hopefully this sets everything straight and explains the departure of the two companies. We of course speak for all when we wish MGM well, and of course look forward to The Weinstein Co’s great success when “Zack And Miri” storm the box office next month.
Kevin Talks “Porno”, “Watchmen” & More With Wizard!
- Wizard devotes 2 pages to a new interview with Kevin in the latest issue, and we’ve got some scannage for ya above. On first glance, we thought this might be a “Zack And Miri” only interview, but there’s so much more to be seen, including some NEW tidbits for fans of “Watchmen”.
On the “Watchmen” front, Kevin reveals that the entire Dr. Manhattan book was translated perfectly and fully intact (panel for panel!), and that the film features “one big change and two small changes”. Also, more kudos for Jackie Earl Haley as Rorschach, in a role that we think will steal the show.On the “Zack And Miri” front, it’s familiar territory for our regular readers, with a few words on the NC-17, Rogen’s casting, and the nudity. This one’s worth a read, so click and enjoy, and then shed a tear when you realize it’s still a month ’til “Zack and Miri”, and over half a year until “Watchmen”!
View Askew NewsBites™
- As we expected, the smart marketing folks behind “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” had the ad run last night during NBC’s comedy block, during the hilarious one-hour season premiere of “The Office”. Hope ya caught it. Very good product placement.
- A classic “Mallrats” line gets dropped during Zap2It’s recap of this week’s “America’s Got Talent” episode, when discussing the operatic Neal E. Boyd.
- Here’s a follow-up to yesterday’s Mention of “Clerks” showing up in Empire’s Top 500 of all time. “Clerks” came in at 361, and Kevin’s favorite film “A Man for All Seasons” was at 106. Askewer Matt Damon has the most entrants with 6 (“Oceans 11″ – 500, “Bourne Supremacy” – 454, “Good Will Hunting” – 433, “Bourne Identity” – 365, “Bourne Ultimatium” – 234 and “The Departed” – 208), next up is Ben Affleck with 2 (“Good Will Hunting” – 433 and “Dazed and Confuzed” – 244). The highest placed Askew connection is Jason Lee at 142 with “Almost Famous”. Number one of all time? “The Godfather”.
“Zack And Miri”: Now Without MGM!
- Kevin made a brief post at the web board to confirm that the MGM Logo, growling lion and all, has been removed from the front of “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”. The Weinsteins want the credit and the kudos all to themselves for this one. Above, we’ve got a scan direct from The Weinstein Co. of the new official one-sheet, without that MGM logo on there. No further details on the last-minute switch, but the movie’s the same, and everyone loves it. And at the end of the day, that’s all that matters, right?

- Entertainment Weekly, who you may recall as the first major entertainment magazine to mention “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” when they published a script page, briefly mentions the movie again in an article on deceptive (or in this case, dead on the money) movie titles.
- We love Empire Magazine, and they love View Askew as well — “Clerks” ranks on their top 500 movies of all time. At #361 to be exact. Check it out along with the complete list at the official Empire website.
- A writer over at 411 Mania presents an essay on the films that make up the Askewniverse this week. In the piece, he runs down each of the movies with a capsule review, excluding Jersey Girl only due to its non-connection with the others.
- That “Zack and Miri” commercial that debuted during SNL over the weekend was spotted in the wild once again – This time, on WWE Monday Night RAW. We’re happy to see the marketing push starting this early, though it seems that it will be a general ramp-up as the release date draws closer. So, expect to see the commercial in choice locations now, and more spots in weeks to come. We’re guessing that the gang bought some airtime during the big NBC comedy premieres tomorrow night, so if you’re wisely tuning into Earl and The Office, watch for the big ad in high def! Just a guess…
