  • Take a peek at a few photos from the recent Columbus, Ohio SModcast with thanks to Mike for sharing from his personal collection. Looks like a nice venue there.
  • Our pal the Buddy Christ once again shows up at the workplace — This time, however, someone has decided to fight back with a biblical quote of their own. Good stuff.
  • Jason Lee’s “Memphis Beat” is now airing Tuesdays on TNT. Chicago Now had the opportunity to conduct a phone interview with the great Mr. Lee recently about the program, where he plays a detective who literally sings the blues during his off hours. Some snips of interest:

NBC surprised everyone when it canceled “Earl.” How did you feel about it?

I definitely miss Earl and working on the show. It was a shame the way they canceled it. We didn’t get to finish the series. I was devastated; we were all confused. But I guess life goes on and now here I am working on something entirely different.

Do you guys still get to see each other every once in a while?

Yeah, I see Ethan [Suplee] quite a bit. He was a friend of mind sort of from “Mall Rats” basically. And so we got to work on “Earl”–came full circle, just about 15 years later.

Well its good to have you back.

      Oh, thank you, thank you.

And “Memphis” couldn’t be more different really.

No, I mean, as an actor you look forward to that, I guess. It’s like you don’t always expect what’s coming and interesting things really come your way and kind of surprise you.

  • View Askew alums Morris Day and The Time (“Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”) have announced that they’re reuniting for a new album and tour. Welcome back, fellas.
  • Jason Lee’s new show, “Memphis Beat”, premieres June 22nd on TNT. If you’d like an early look, AMC movie theaters have been running a segment on it during its 20 minute pre-show news lately. So far, we’re liking what we see — Lee should knock this one outta the park, too. It was weird not having “Earl” back on the tube this year, but it’ll be nice to see Lee in front of the cameras again this summer.
  • This week on Retro Radio, “Clerks”’s Marilyn Ghigloitti takes on John Wesley Shipp, “The Flash” — Listen right now at the official Retro Radio portal on the web. Her new show covers film, tv, comics, music and more, with a retro slant of the 1980’s.

  • The Montreal Gazette confirms that Kevin will be featured in a program called “A Late Afternoon With Kevin Smith” as part of its Insider Series at the “Just For Laughs” festival. A Late Afternoon with Kevin Smith takes place July 15 at 3 p.m. in the Grand Salon at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. You can get a pass that covers this event and a TON more for just $99. For information and reservations, go to http://www.hahaha.com/fan.
  • Watch for Kevin’s small role in Noel Clarke’s “4321″, which ironically takes place on an airplane of all places (this was pre-Southwest and pre-tour bus, of course). You can briefly spot him about halfway through the trailer located at the official site http://4321movie.com/.
  • Marilyn Ghigliotti (“Clerks”) will be a featured guest at Wizard World Philly from June 11-13 this year. She’s very kind and generous with her fans, so it’s totally worth stopping by to see her, say hello, and get an autograph. You can currently hear her on Retro Radio.
  • Another attempt to bring Kevin to a popular program as a host appears on Facebook with attempts to get him running an episode of WWE Raw on Facebook this week. Meanwhile, the efforts to get him hosting Saturday Night Live next season are now up over 1,100 already and can easily grow with your tweets and posts of support.
  • Mania has an article featuring fan-made poster images of “10 Video Games That Should Never be Made Into Movies”. #5 features Seann William Scott in the View Askew production “Paperboy” directed by Kevin.
  • Movies.com cites the great Jason Lee in “Chasing Amy” as one of “8 Great Sarcastic Sidekicks”:

Sometimes, the sidekick can be the devil on the hero’s shoulder, as in Kevin Smith’s game-changing 1997 comedy about comic book artist Holden (played by Ben Affleck), who falls in love with lesbian cartoonist Alyssa (Joey Lauren Adams). Lee’s Banky objects to the relationship for many reasons, most of them bigoted and shortsighted—Banky doesn’t just have issues with lesbians; he’s such a misogynist that it’s hard to imagine him approving of a relationship with any woman. But Smith makes this character hilarious even if you wind up hating much of what he has to say. (A few years later, in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, the writer-director provided a neat—and hilarious—little coda to Banky’s frothing homophobia.)

  • Second City Hockey recently named Kevin as “Beard of the Day”. Speaking of hockey, our precious Flyers start their quest for Lord Stanley’s Cup on Saturday. Cheer for them.
  • Finally today, a moment of silence for “Law and Order”, who concluded their record broadcast run this week. Kevin, a fan of the program, appeared as a special guest a few years back. Case closed.

  • Please do the great Ming Chen a HUGE solid and vote, as many times as you, your family, and friends can, for LOGO #7 (lucky 7!) in the Lowell Spinners logo contest. It’s SIMPLE and only takes you a few seconds to do so. Without Ming, none of this greatness you see on the web from View Askew to SModcast would be possible. And to top it all off, the dude’s a majorly talented graphic artist and his logo, frankly, IS the best of that crop anyway. So get on over there, vote #7, and let’s see a big win for Ming this year!
  • Kevin dropped a few more tidbits on the mecca, SModcastle, coming to the L.A. area later this summer, via Twitter this week:

Via @TheJesseAguilar “any chance open mic/amateur stand-up and sketches at SModcastle?” Oh yes. Lots. We’re putting together programs now…

Kevin Smith’s Glory Hole will be me sitting down, SMod-style, for interviews with a surprise guest: random, well-known fuckers every week.

Via @planethooligan “recording Smodcastle events” SModcastle will be wired like I’m Nixon in Paisley Park. #EverySingleShowWillBeRecorded

Here’s hoping for a speedy birth for SModcastle – The place sounds cooler and cooler with each passing day.

  • Hopefully you caught one of the best episodes of Saturday Night Live in quite some time when Betty White hosted last weekend — Well, a fan has taken the famous Facebook campaign that got SNL’s attention, and given it a Kevin slant — After all, don’t you all agree that Kevin would be absolutely HILARIOUS hosting an episode of SNL? Seriously. We think between his drive to succeed, his comedic timing, and even some of the writing skills he could offer up, it would be one of the best episodes of all time. Got a Facebook account and wanna show your support? Simply join this group , “We Want Kevin Smith to Host SNL”, and pass the word along via Twitter, Facebook, and the like. This would ROCK.
  • We’d like to thank Eric & Marilyn at Retro Radio for the very kind shout out in their recent video ad for the broadcast. This brand new podcast is just picking up steam, and can be accessed LIVE (as well as archived) at the official Podomatic site of the program.
  • Want to be a part of an interesting research project? A poster at the View Askew WWWboard is a PhD Researcher looking into the culture of Kevin Smith. Check out his post which delivers further details on his study. To be a part of it, fill out his preliminary questionnaire which will only take around 15 minutes of your time. In addition to this study, he’s also hoping to do some sort of presentation in Red Bank this August to coincide with Kevin’s appearance there. The entire idea is to show what a unique, vibrant fan community that Kevin has acquired over the years. Cool stuff. Be a part of it!

  • Part one of Vic Barry’s epic audio interview with Kevin is available for download right now. This one includes: Kevin’s experience of Dublin, What happened after Zack and Miri, How “Cop Out” has a connection with his Dad, Critics, his evolution, and more. Part two should be on the way this week.
  • DVDTalk reveals the second part of their extensive, exclusive interview with Kevin. More great DVD and film-centric stuff here as Kevin discusses things ranging from the “Daredevil” film, “The Crazies”, “Road House”, and, of course, a little bit of “Clerks”, “Mallrats”, and “Chasing Amy” thrown in for good measure. Here’s a snippet:

Kevin Smith: (laughs) Roger Ebert is in rare form with how he keeps re-tweeting his Cop Out review. I was thinking if Roger was trying to send me a message. But he’s liked enough of my stuff in the past. He liked Jersey Girl, but I know he didn’t like Mallrats and Clerks II. He also said something great about Chasing Amy saying how he regretted not putting it in his top ten. Roger has always been so fucking fair. Even though people kept pointing out he keeps re-tweeting that Cop Out review and saying, “isn’t that suspicious?” Obviously I’m not retarded, it’s very suspicious. But he’s a guy who’s been nice to me throughout my career in particular when I really needed it. I wasn’t going to start yelling, “he did what? I fucking guested on his show!” I mean I’ve been saying a lot lately and it’s dawning on me, but I’m almost 40. Getting mad at Roger Ebert is just not in the cards for me. He’s an icon and I like the dude. He didn’t like it? That’s fine, he liked something else I did. It’s not like I don’t get it. I used to be very contentious… Shit, used to be? A few weeks ago I took on a huge corporation (laughs). That was a real thing, but getting mad about an opinion isn’t my thing. Maybe they’ll like the next one. For Cop Out, it’s a different world. A bad review for Cop Out isn’t going to fucking kill the movie. Most people going in are thinking, “we know it’s stupid, who cares?”

Read it all over at DVD Talk.

  • Rotten Tomatoes rates the Top 10 films of Chris Rock, with “Dogma” clocking in at #4:

We’re talking about Dogma, the 1999 comedy in which Smith pits a pair of exiled angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) against a ragtag group that includes a Greek muse turned stripper (Salma Hayek), the heretofore unknown 13th apostle (Chris Rock), Jesus Christ’s last surviving relative (Linda Fiorentino), and a pair of unwitting prophets (Jason Mewes and Smith as, of course, Jay and Silent Bob) — all while God (played by Alanis Morissette, natch) lies trapped in the comatose body of a homeless man (s)He was using to play skee ball. Not for the easily offended, obviously — but despite what Dogma’s detractors may have thought, Smith didn’t go for cheap gags, instead using humor to leaven a thoughtful look at what we believe, and why. “Make no mistake,” cautioned TV Guide’s Maitland McDonagh, “Kevin Smith’s talky, farcical comedy of cosmic errors is clever. But it’s clever in a deeply juvenile way.”

  • “Clerks” scores a mention in this UK-based article, where it’s revealed that the film is actually on a blacklist from being viewed in a local prison. Truthfully, though, it seems all 18+ rated films were banned, not just specific titles.
  • Leaving Mundania is an engaging documentary that explores the lives of anime enthusiasts who express their fandom through “cosplay” (costume play). This film follows several cosplayers from the Greater Toronto Area as they prepare for their annual pilgrimage to Anime North 2009, the largest anime fan convention in Canada. One of the cosplay folks is a “Silent Bob” clone, and has a photo stream available here if you’re curious.
  • Speaking of that classic, Total Film has it on its list of “90’s Films That Should NOT Be Remade” :

      #16: Clerks (1994)

The ’90s Film: At the time, Kevin Smith’s comedy was a defining document of no-budget slacker filmmaking, with its slapshod camerawork, shaggy-dog dialogue and on-the-pulse video store setting.

Nowadays, apart from still being hilarious, it’s a period piece. The technical ability bar has been raised for budding auteurs, and – as Clerks 2 confirmed – nobody rents anymore.

If They Have To Remake It: It should be topical. Let’s set it in the vast warehouses of Lovefilm.com, with Dante and Randall bitching and moaning all day long as they traipse to the stockroom to post yet another boxset of The Hills.

  • In this “interesting” tune from avante-garde metal band “iwrestledabearonce”, a famous “Clerks” line is sampled at the end. A fascinating listen, seeing music like this even exists.
  • Back on March 4th, Dave Letterman ran a piece in which “Biff Visits a Movie Set”, which turned out to be the shoot for “Cop Out”. Bruce, Tracy, Kevin, and Malcolm were all spotted. Check it out above!

  • Tomorrow! A free, excellent chance to drink some beer, eat some pizza, and watch 3 fantastic Kevin Smith films at Urbana, Illinois’ Canopy Club. Starting at 6 PM on Sunday, catch “Clerks”, “Chasing Amy” and “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” for FREE, and get a pizza and a pitcher of beer for $10! We’re already calculating the drive time to Illinois. Be there if you are in range.
  • Kevin is mentioned in this brief article on Cinematical which cites “The Best Celebrities to Meet In Person”. Kevin’s been kind to yours truly from the very first meeting, and always just as gracious every time, so we can certainly vouch for this.
  • “Chasing Amy” scores a mention in this article on great rain scenes in film:

Chasing Amy (1997) – A scene that you’d expect to be at the end of the movie, but here it proves to be only the beginning. Holden spills his love for his allegedly lesbian friend Alyssa in the pouring rain, in a scene that would probably be cheesy if it wasn’t for Kevin Smith’s characteristically great and down-to-earth dialogue.

  • An observant scooper catches some “Clerks” references in the web comic “The Whiteboard”’s archives. A pretty obvious bit of signage in Dante-inspired in this episode.
  • From a recent Jeopardy: This is a $1600 question? Maybe this show’s not as hard as they make it out to be.
  • MewesBites! The Winnipeg Free Press runs an article about “Todd and the Book of Pure Evil”, a 13-part series, in which Jason may (or may not) play the Devil, in janitor’s clothes. Pretty neat concept, though no word on if this will air anywhere outside of Canada at this point. We’ll keep you posted.

Also, DreadCentral is running a contest (for UK readers only) where you can win a copy of the Documentary “Tattoos: A Scarred History” in which Jason appears.

  • Anyone caught the lovely-as-ever Joey Lauren Adams playing a recurring role on Showtimes Diablo Cody-created series “The United States of Tara” lately? She’s playing a lesbian bartender whose carrying on a relationship with one of Tara’s alters/personalities, “Buck” (the guy). Got your interest, right? It’s a decent watch, tune in if you’ve got the means. It’s nice to see Ms. Adams back in front of the camera again.

  • “Jersey Girl’s” Raquel Castro, now 16 years old (makes you feel a little old, doesn’t it?) has been pursuing music and dance, and has now debuted her first music video on YouTube which has been getting some nice feedback. JG was her breakout role, but she also recently appeared in a small role in “Brooklyn’s Finest”.
  • The absolutely awesome (it just seems to get funnier every time you rewatch it) Clerks Animated Series gets much-deserved props in this Film 411 article on short-lived, but brilliant, animated classics. Here’s a snippet:

If you didn’t already know, this series is tremendous. Clerks: The Animated Series tackles a lot of the same topics as in the movies but thanks to the additional freedom that animation grants, the series shines like a freaking diamond. The humor found here is not fully like in the movie, where vulgarity and cruelness plays a big part. In the series, the jokes are expanded into unique ideas that were absolutely made for television. Jokes, references, and pop culture hysteria are quickly rattled off one after another in a hilarious string of continuance. Not to mention the fantastic jabs they take against popular sitcom devices: fake sitcom introductions (“this show was drawn in front of a live studio audience”), narrative recap devices (“previously on Clerks – beeeeeeeeeeeeeeep”), infamous television staples (such as the clip show episode being only the second episode of the series) movie spoofs (Schindler’s List + Flintstones = Flintstone’s List), and other popular culture figures.

  • Don’t miss SModcast #103, now available via iTunes and at the beautiful new SModcast website . This memorable episode concludes Kevin’s stint with his mother as co-host and features her participating in one of Kevin’s favorite hobbies:

      SMODCAST #103: Amazing Grace

In which a Mother learns the benefits of going green.

Don’t miss it, available immediately now exclusively at www.smodcast.com via downloadable and streaming audio formats.

  • Official television ads have started airing for “Cop Out”, with many fans catching their first look at new footage during last weekend’s AFC championship game. Will it have a coveted Superbowl ad spot? Here’s hoping. Meanwhile, Kevin hints that a new R-rated “red band” trailer also exists for the film, but we’ve yet to locate it on the web. When we find it, we’ll let ya know. Seen a “Cop Out” ad during other broadcasts? Let us know.
  • Congrats to the awesome Jason Lee on his fast return to television. TNT has just announced that Lee will headline a new series titled “Delta Blues” which is set to launch later this year:

The hourlong “Blues,” from Clooney and Grant Heslov’s Smokehouse Pictures and Warner Horizon, centers on Dwight Hendricks (Lee), a Memphis police officer who lives with his mother (Celia Weston) and moonlights as a musician.

The pilot, written by Liz Garcia and Joshua Harto and directed by Clark Johnson, co-starred Alfre Woodard, Abraham Benrubi and DJ Qualls. Clooney, Heslov, Garcia and Johnson are executive producers, with Henry Bronchtein and Abby Wolf-Weiss co-executive producing and Harto producing.

  • The lovely Rosario Dawson, as Becky Scott, claims the #5 spot on Total Film’s list of “15 Hottest Movie Mistresses”:

      Becky Scott

Actress/Film: Rosario Dawson, Clerks II (2006)

Cheating On/With: As manager of a local fast food outlet, she’s relatively footloose; employee Dante Hicks (Brian O’Halloran) on the other hand, with whom she’s apparently been dirtying up the diner tables, really isn’t.

Alright, We Forgive You: Despite being pregnant as a result of their tryst, she tries to let Dante pursue his new life of marital mediocrity in Florida.

And, since every bloke must at some point face the abject humiliation of learning to dance, it might as well happen like [caution: swears] this.

Catch ya next time! Thanks for checking in with News Askew today.
