Mewes Appearing In Two Upcoming Films…

November 30th @ 12:27 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Seabass, Tim Dahill

  • Jason Mewes continues to branch out into new, different projects way outside the Askewniverse, currently working on two films that we imagine will see release sometime in 2009.

We just received another report that he’s continuing to work on a horror flick called “Silent But Deadly” up in Canada, where he will play a silent killer. We got some news on this a while back, but details sort of fizzled out, having us wonder about the project’s status. The film currently has a Myspace page, IMDB page (now listing the film is in post-production) , and an official site where the poster shows Mewes as the top marquee star. We’ll keep an eye on this project and let you know when and where you can see it. We’re also dropping the producers a line to see if we can get any stills or other details.

Now, here’s the new one - MTV Movies reports that Mewes will appear in a film called “K-11″, which is a prison-themed film starring Kristen Stweart (”Twilight”) and Nikki Reed (”Thirteen”). In the film, the two actresses will play two gay MALE roles. Strange, no? A snippet on the Mewes connection:

Although little else is known about the film, one of their co-stars will be Kevin Smith cult icon Jason Mewes, who recently confirmed his involvement with “K-11”in a radio interview and said that he’d dyed his hair black for the role.

We know nothing more on Jason’s role in that one at this time, but with high profile stars, we think we’ll be hearing more on that one soon, as well. Stay tuned.

  • Cinemablend pays thanks to filmmakers who “keep it real”, citing Kevin as one of the worthy:

Kevin Smith’s characters are all cut from the same, humble cloth. Just because you’re smart doesn’t mean you’ll make it big, and even though Smith’s characters may be brilliant people, more often than not they’re found behind the counters of convenience stores, coffee shops, and roving the hallways of strip malls. They talk without an FCC filter, flinging curse words with reckless abandon in the way that any guy in a bar might do, talking about the same stuff you’ve probably said yourself after a beer or two. They fall in love, they fight, they make friends, they break up, and they do it without Hollywood shine. They’re too broke to afford glamour. Not that they let that stop them. Broke doesn’t mean broken and with or without money Smith’s avatars have smart things to say and lives to live. They live those lives not in LA or New York, but in nowhere towns in New Jersey or in the frozen, bitterly cold suburbs of Pittsburgh. Even thrust into the weirdest of situations, Kevin Smith’s characters are still mostly just dudes. They hang out in bars, wander around comic book shops, and work in video stores. They’re pot smoking, porno making, lesbian courting dudes.

  • G4’s video show “Fresh Ink” runs down the latest comic releases, and has a few words on issue #1 of “Batman: Cacophony”. Blair Butler digs Kevin’s return to comics, and says she’ll be on board for the series. Skip in to around 3 minutes into the program if you want to get right to that review. A few panels are shown but no spoilers for those of you who have yet to pick up the first of the three-issue series.
  • We don’t have a scan (yet, anyway), but we’re getting reports that the latest version of “Previews” (which details upcoming comics and swag releases), shows the awesome “Monroeville Zombies” hoodies (along with a cast
shot from “Zack And Miri Make a Porno”). This means these should be available for holiday shipment from the Stash at the price of $40 - $43 (depending on size). Absolutely an awesome gift to pick up for the fan in your life (or yourself). Definitely one of our favorite swag items of all time.
  • Podcast “Two Geeks, a Mic & a Podcast” recently devoted an episode to Kevin in honor of the theatrical release of “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. The guys take a detailed look at the entire Smith filmography leading up to the latest addition, including their review of Z&M.
  • Catch glimpses of Askewers Ben Affleck and Justin Long in the trailer for “He’s Just Not That Into You”, which looks like it’ll do some decent business as a date movie when it his theaters this February.
  • The Netherlands branch of Comedy Central will air Kevin Smith films for the next few weeks, every Friday night. Since the link’s in Dutch, we can’t give many more details, and are unsure if they air cut or uncut versions. If you live in the area, perhaps you already know.
  • Finally today, we continue to enjoy following the evolution of flying cars ever since Kevin’s famous “Tonight Show” short — Today, MSN reveals the latest design taking flight — Pretty amazing (though we shudder at the thought of some drivers behind the wheels of these things). Catch ya next time.

  • We’ll be checking out some newsbites old and new this week, as we clean out the mailboxes with some leftovers from the onslaught of “Zack and Miri” news — So, while some of these may date back a bit, it’ll be nice to have some different stuff to read up on, in case you missed some of these articles while we had the major promotional pushes happening…
  • Jay Busbee’s sports blog mentions a familiar locale which we’re THINKING is likely a View Askew reference. Check out the last paragraph and see for yourself.
  • Not only did the Affleck/Damon produced “Project Greenlight” horror flick “Feast” get a CRAZY direct to DVD sequel last month, the original also came to Region 2 DVD for the first time. If you haven’t seen “Feast 2″ yet, it’s worth watching just for how ridiculous it pushes the envelope and basic horror conventions. Good fun, both flicks.
  • Hey and while we’re name-dropping on Affleck, who we hear is doing some philanthropoc work in the Congo currently (good on ya, Ben) — A few stories we missed chatted up his joining the cast of the upcoming Mike Judge comedy
“Extract”. Lehigh Valley Live and Rope of Silicon both put Affleck front and center. He’ll join Jason Bateman and what’s looking to be a similarly talented, funny supporting cast along with him. One to watch for.
  • Kevin scores a couple mentions in reviews of that “Spaced” DVD set that Stash West held a signing event for - Like your friendly webmasters here, Kevin also supported this fantastic show, and we HIGHLY recommend renting or purchasing copies of the set, which includes every single episode ever filmed. A true bargain, and an essential part of any fanboy or fangirl’s DVD library. Check out Monsters and Critics and Film for two more reviews of the set (never ran before here at NA) which mention Kevin as well.
  • That’ll put a close to today’s edition of leftovers, but we’ve got more where that came from - See ya next time with more of the ‘bites that have been hanging around the News Askew mailboxes. Happy Friday!

  • A new (but recorded pre-”Zack and Miri” release) SModcast dropped over at QSE this week, in case ya missed it. Naturally, the film is a big opening topic, including the guy’s thoughts on the ad bannings that took place in Philly and other parts of the country, and on to parenting kids when exposed to R-rated movies. And then, of course, the guys continue to go anywhere the conversation takes them in their own unique way. Here’s the logline:

In which our heroes confront the civic perils of making a porno, debate the innocence of youth, discuss the responsibilities of parenthood, witness the genesis of a northern superhero team, and try to unravel the mystery of one boy’s vestigal gills.

You’ll find SModcast at just one place on the web - FREE at Quick Stop Entertainemnt. With Kevin’s busy schedule back east this week, we might have to wait a while longer for the next episode, so enjoy taking this one in. And of course, we’ll let ya know when the next one arrives.

  • Check out a shot of a BIG promo image for “Zack and Miri” featuring Smith, Banks, and Rogen as it appeared on last week’s Boston Metro - Pretty cool to see, and thanks to our scooper for snapping the photo.
  • Catch a quick glimpse of Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes in the newly released trailer for “Fanboys” — Alas, no Kristen Bell in Slave Leia gear.

  • Kevin stopped by this week’s episode of the new and improved Best Week Ever on VH1 to promote “Zack And Miri Make A Porno”. We found this quick spot he did with host Paul F. Tompkins for the movie, hopefully VH1 will post the full episode before the end of the weekend. In any case we’ll have the full breakdown of Kevin’s appearance as soon as we have it. UPDATE : Our scooper John just informed us that this clip is Kevin’s entire appearance from the show. Click the play button above the enjoy the embedded clip!
  • One of our favorite movie sites, We Are Movie Geeks, has decided to delcare it Kevin Smith Week on their site. Go check it out for tons of exclusive content.
  • The Los Angeles Times recently ran this interview with Seth Rogen where he discusses among other things Zack And Miri Make A Porno and his upcoming writing/starring role in Green Hornet.

  • Keeping with the “every film View Askew releases has controversy” theme, “Zack And Miri” bus ads and poster marketing have grabbed the attention of a college professor according to the Boston Herald. As usual, we’re figuring any press is good press, and that the professor feels the same way - After all, she’s selling a book she co-authored. But, like the article says, the ads have passed all necessary screenings, and are totally legal to run as they are. The story was picked up by 7 News.
  • On the newly released DVD for “The Happening”, an extra features looks at the scene where our beloved Brian O’Halloran drives a jeep into a tree. Watch this feature for more of O’Halloran behind the scenes, and certainly more than ended up in the final flick.
  • Jay & Bob show up on a top 10 list of “movie losers” though the title is misleading, as the article more refers to classic but flawed film heroes. Check out the piece HERE courtesy of Heckler Spray.

  • “Clerks” tops Always Watching’s list of Top 25 independent films made for less than a million bucks:

      CLERKS

Budget: $27,000 (before additional post production work)

A god amongst film geeks, beloved filmmaker and comic book writer Kevin Smith has amassed an arsenal of 6 movies to fit into his View Askewniverse, and that world begins and ends with Clerks. Though many people have an almost instinctive adverse reaction to black-and-white cinema nowadays, Clerks proves that when it comes to comedy, a strong focus on dialogue is almost always the primary route to success. And with the film taking place almost entirely within a convenience store where Kevin Smith worked at the time, the concentration staying on dialogue above anything else allowed for the young filmmaker to keep the budget as minimal as possible. That’s not to say paying for the movie was an easy task. According to Wikipedia, in order to acquire the funds for the film, Smith sold a large proportion of his extensive comic book collection, maxed out eight to ten credit cards with $2000 limits, dipped into a portion of funds set aside for his college education and spent insurance money awarded for a car he and Jason Mewes lost in a flood.

Since the film had to be shot at night when the store was closed, Smith needed to come up with a way to explain why the steel shutters were closed, and in turn led to a great scene in the film where Dante discovers somebody put gum in the locks and has to put up a big sign written in shoe polish that says, “I Assure You, We’re Open.” Situations like these just go to show how being forced to think outside the box can actually lead to much more rewarding outcomes.

The entire list is made up of what we’d call pretty much must-see movies, so we highly recommend you check it out and pick up some of the titles as your schedule allows. Our kudos to the authors of this piece for a fantastic list.

  • Hey, while we’re talking about “Clerks”, here’s a new concept that came to us from /Film today - A graphical representation of dialogue in a film.

The site uses “Clerks” as an example and takes a color square to represent a characters speaking part, and symbols to indicate profane dialogue. We’re not sure we get the experiment, either, but it’s definitely the first time we’ve seen anything like it.

  • Kevin does a solid for awesome video streaming site Hulu, which gives users FREE instant access to a huge database of film and TV - Uncut, no less. They’re now streaming up the movie that inspired him to make “Clerks”, “Slacker”, and Kev’s taken a few moments to blog an introduction.

August 2, 1991. The day of my 21st birthday. Most folks elect to cut loose and enjoy the freedom that turning 21 affords. I, however — being a total loser — opted, instead, to take the 50-mile drive up the Jersey Turnpike with my friend Vincent Pereira so we could peep a film reviewed, quite favorably, by J. Hoberman in the Village Voice. It was unheard of in my neck of the woods to drive that far to see a movie (let alone a movie with zero movie stars in it), but the promise of a scene centered on a Madonna pap smear of questionable authenticity was bait enough to lure us from the Jersey ‘burbs into the wilds of Manhattan-after-dark.

After overpaying for both parking and popcorn, we settled into what seats we could find together in the packed theater of a midnight screening. And once the trailer for Hal Hartley’s Trust concluded, the Orion Classics logo lit up the screen and introduced me to my future. For the next 100 minutes or so, I was agog. My jaw literally hung open as this shaggy paean to those who follow the road not taken unspooled, offering me a glimpse into a free-associative world of ideas instead of plot, people instead of characters, and Nowheresville, Texas, instead of the usual California or New York settings most movies elected to feature (that “Nowheresville” was really Austin speaks volumes on how culturally bereft I was at the time). That night, director Richard Linklater and his film not only captured my imagination, he (and it) captured my heart — not to mention kick-started my ambition. On the hour-long drive home from the theater that night, I realized what I wanted to do with my life: I wanted to be a filmmaker. That’s the power of Slacker: if you let it, it’ll change your life. It certainly changed mine.

So if you hate me and my films, blame Richard Linklater’s Slacker. And if you love me and my films, thank Richard Linklater for Slacker. Either way, do yourself a favor and watch Richard Linklater’s Slacker here on Hulu. Right now.

Check it out, and then, if you’re in a Hulu-approved region, check out the movie for free, right now. Long live Hulu!

  • Netflix held a movie watching competition (sounds fun!) which ran a whopping 123 hours! Geeksugar reports on the winners, and Fox News reports that “Clerks” was the third to last film in the Popcorn Bowl.
  • Time to let Randal know…The Flying Car is finally here!
  • Want to make a Kevin Smith replica out of paper? One scooper shows us how. The end result is quite cool, especially considering it was all done simply with paper! We totally need to try to find the time to construct a couple of these.
  • And finally today, given the recent actions on the stock market, we think this photo speaks for itself, though the caption makes it a good newsbite for us today. See ya next time. Good luck to us all, as we watch our stocks and 401k drop drop drop.

If you wanna take your mind off it, “Quarantine” may be a good bet in theaters this weekend — If the film is anywhere near as scary as the Spanish original it’s based on (“[Rec]“, which we checked out and dug a couple months ago), it’ll be a creepy time in the dark while you wait just three shorts weeks for Zack And Miri!

  • The Count Basie Theatre recently conducted an audience poll for the best 50 shows they’ve ever put on. Kevin’s historic 37th birthday Q&A showed up, as did an ‘03 appearance by George Carlin. See their article for full details. Kevin returns for what’s sure to be another fantastic night on Friday, November 7th, at 7:00 PM.
  • Brandon Routh was recently in his home state of Iowa, and the local paper (Des Moines Register) ran an article on him and mentioned his next movie being “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”:

“Routh’s next movie, to be released Oct. 31, is “Zack and Mari Make a Porno,” in which he plays the boyfriend of a gay porn star. He said the movie is a bit raunchy.

“It’s a very funny film and actually very heartwarming,” Routh said.”

  • Last update, we mentioned Jay Mewes’ appearance this weekend at the Mid Ohio Comic Con. We now have a few more details - Jay will be there BOTH days of the show (Saturday AND Sunday), and also participate in an interview with a moderator followed by an audience Q&A. You should be able to catch him at other events and on the floor signing all weekend as well. Definitely worth a trip in for that, folks.

Check out a few photos a fan took from a recent Mewes appearance to get an idea.

  • The hilarious Good Will Hunting sequel created for “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” makes another list today, appearing in Cinematical’s Top Seven Movies Within Movies:

Along the same lines as the uber-crappy sequels that pop up in Cecil B. Demented, Kevin Smith gives Ben and Matt’s flick some sequel action under the uninterested eye of Gus Van Sant. Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season awards Matt Damon with the chance to blow away rich, jerky smarty pantses rather than wasting his time in a battle of wits. It’s an all-too-brief moment, but worth Jay and Silent Bob’s trip.

Honorable Mention in Film: Bluntman and Chronic with Mark Hamill.

  • We hope everyone’s signed up and registered to vote next month — Yep, it’s coming up THAT fast. • SpoutBlog runs an extensive new interview with Kevin from Fantastic Fest 2008. Watch for some raunchy spoilers for the flick among the answers. Here’s a few snips (no spoilers here):

Q: This is probably your most emotional film. I mean it’s close to Chasing Amy, because that had some emotional moments, but this one was like this had like naked, open emotion in it. Was that the hardest part of it for you, or the porno part the hardest part?

A: The porno part was definitely the hardest. The naked emotion stuff, I feel like we had in Chasing Amy, I feel like even in the last movie Clerks 2 they’re sitting between Dante and Randal in the jail scene, which is just emotionally devastating. You watch one dude who’s always confident, always a wise ass, like laid bare. That to me is like devastating, because that’s a dude completely unguarded.

So doing a version, not a version of that, but doing a girl-boy type emotion that lay bare, that was easy. Shooting fake sex––that was definitely something I wasn’t ready for…

Of course, you’ll want to surf over and read every word at Spout Blog. We’ve gotta say, we’ve never seen a posted interview taken so literally that it blogs it down all the way to a charlie horse.

  • Last we heard, Brian Lynch had written a script for “The Sims” feature film, so we thought some of you might be interested in this latest tidbit on the project from Aint It Cool. No word on if Lynch and his scripting duties are still intact, but we haven’t heard otherwise.

  • Slate runs an excellent piece on the rise of the R-rated “Red Band” trailers and uses the recent “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” redband MPAA trailer that graced the web a few weeks ago as their opening example:

As you’d expect, the trailer for Kevin Smith’s Zack and Miri Make a Porno explains the movie’s premise: Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) become adult-movie stars when they can’t pay the rent. What you might not anticipate is the trailer’s extreme lewdness: Justin Long name-checking a gay porn film called Glen and Garry Suck Ross’ Meaty Cock or Rogen’s declaring that he’d be happy to watch “a tape of Rosie O’Donnell getting fucking stupid.” Vivid descriptions of male genitalia and Rosie O’Donnell in flagrante delicto—these are the glories of the red-band trailer.

It’s quite a good article, very well-written with tons of great examples from today and the past. Worth your valuable clicking time.

  • Actor/comedian Dane Cook brings up Kevin when naming his top 5 flicks to Rotten Tomatoes. From his selection of “The Dark Knight”:

“…It’s one of the greatest crime dramas out there. And when Kevin Smith lovingly compared it to Godfather II, it was before I had seen the movie and I thought, “Okay, this is jumping the shark. Kevin Smith, if I see him, I want to punch in the mouth. Because he has taken the hype machine and he’s cranked it up to 11 via Spinal Tap.” And I was unhappy with [his] statement.

Now that I’ve sat through the movie, I want to French kiss Kevin Smith. He f–king nailed it. And this movie, The Dark Knight, it deserves the money its making. It’s epic, it’s classic, Heath Ledger would be amazing whether it was a posthumous performance, whatever. He’s awesome in it. I. Love. This. Movie. “

  • Canadians may want to keep an eye on the Documentary Channel, which has been airing Malcolm Ingram’s View Askew production “Small Town, Gay Bar” over the weekend. Check your local listings.
  • For those of you who watched the Backyard FX episode filmed in Leonardo outside Quick Stop which we mentioned last week, you can now watch the Part Two conclusion which just came online. Good stuff, and totally free.
