  • Kevin’s last tweet about Carnegie tix listed that 1195 seats are left to sell out the place — Though we imagine numbers have gone down since then. Keep passing the word around. We’re also betting that a lot of New Yorkers are last-minute types, and may pack the events as the date draws closer. We’re betting on a sell-out. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reserve seats NOW!
  • Audio from Kevin’s Thursday appearance on Canada’s Dean Blundell Show is now available for your online download. You can grab it on their Podcast index page http://www.edge.ca/DJsandShows/Podcasts.aspx (dated 5.7 - “Kevin Smith Meets Adrian”), via MP3 Direct , or though iTunes. Enjoy as Kevin takes on this very strange regular caller to the program.
  • Watch for a quick Jay Mewes cameo in this trailer for “Degrassi Goes Hollywood”, airing this summer on “The N”. CTV has a few more details on the production as well — We seem to recall Kevin being around when they filmed this one, though have not heard any confirmation on HIS possible appearance in the pic. Just Mewes (so far).
  • Here’s an interesting way to tie a news story about a flood into View Askew - Mention Kevin’s famous story about getting his start with “Clerks” soon after experiencing a flood of his own. This, from the Fargo, North Dakota area:

For the people who had property damaged during the flood there’s a lot of talk of what was lost.

Furniture. Carpet. Televisions. Entire houses. Bootleg videos of “BJ and the Bear.”

Whatever the flood stole from you – your ambivalence toward the Red River – there’s something to be gained from this ordeal; a career as a semi-famous filmmaker who just might be the voice of a generation.

Lost in the discussion about his movies is the fact that auteur Kevin Smith started his career because of a flood.

The guy who made low-budget film chic with his 1994 movie “Clerks” paid for part of that movie’s production expenses with FEMA money that was given to him after a flood destroyed some of his well-worn Volkswagen vehicles.

Smith used that money, the ransom from selling some comic books and credit cards to finance “Clerks,” the dialogue-heavy movie about lazy convenience store employees that became a benchmark of ’90s culture.

Since then, Smith has made several feature films, become a slacker icon and, at least to me, proved he – not Kurt Cobain – was the voice of the generation that came of age in the ’90s.

Would Smith have attained that stature without a flood and some FEMA cash? Probably. But with basements that still smell like the Red River puked in them, it’s more fun to think that the flood made the man.

Moral of the story: Grab that FEMA money and make a movie. Or write a book. Or design a video game. Or get the stink out of your basement.

  • In other press, The Times, a South African paper, posts a small interview/article with Kevin for some “Porno” promo, though we think this could have been put together from a past junket. Nothing too new, but worth a click for the curious.
  • For something that looks a bit more recent, New York’s Daily Star “Teen Talk” movie reviewer takes a brief look at the films of Kevin Smith. See ya next time — Kevin promises a new SModcast will be up and running shortly. So stay tuned.

  • The awesome Lee Stranahan/Kevin Smith interview continues on YouTube with Part 8 now live on YouTube and ready for your free viewing pleasure. In this segement, titled “Gretzky, Gratitude, and God”, Kevin reflects on his body of work, what inspired him, and being thankful. There’s at least two more segements to come! Don’t miss this or all of Stranahan’s bits of this interview, one of the best sit-downs with Kev that we’ve ever seen in our 11+ years doing this site.
  • Today’s IMDB Poll channels View Askew with the following question (though improperly labeling Jason Lee as “Silent Bob”):

Which Kevin Smith duo is your favorite? (Suggested by “Zombie-Kermit”)

Check out all the choices at the IMDB Poll site, with choices including “Zack & Miri”, “Loki & Bartleby”, “Dante & Randal”, and, of course, “Jay & Silent Bob”.

  • “Zack and Miri” alum Craig Robinson appears in a recent episode of James Gunn’s “PG Porn” web series. Check it out at the Spike TV website. Porn stars mix with famous actors in this new series — In Craig’s episode, the lovely and spirited Bree Olson is featured in the hilarious “Helpful Bus” episode. Really great stuff. Watch ‘em all.

  • We were waiting a while for this one…And happy to see the series back. Lee Stranahan’s awesome interview with Kevin Smith returns with Part 7, titled “Talking to People He Wrote”. This 8-minute clip focuses on the new script he picked up, pleasing his Dad, and his body of work. Miss a clip? They’re all over at the Stranahan page — We’ll likely put up a nice neat story with every clip once the interview concludes, as well.

  • Kevin sat in for the duration of the Opie & Anthony show on Friday last week, and our buddy Will’s got the edited audio of the entire broadcast for your listening pleasure. Gotta love it. Download your size/quality MP3 of
    choice:

The 64 Kbps stereo copy. (2:02 runtime, 56 MB file size, right-click to save). Or…

Here’s the 24 Kbps mono copy. (2:02 runtime, 21 MB file size, right-click to save).

As always, thanks to Will for his encoding skills — Following this show, Opie went on to attend the New Jersey Devils playoff game at The Rock with Kevin — A game I was lucky enough to be invited to as well, with thanks to Kevin and Ming. What a place!

  • In the Nashville area? Check out the “Full Moon Tattoo & Horror Festival” this weekend, where Jason Mewes is scheduled to appear. The fest runs from April 24-26th at the Nashville Airport Marriott Hotel. No details on Mewes’ appearance schedule, though if we hear anything concrete, we’ll let ya know. Assuming he’ll be in town for all 3 days, Fridays are traditionally the best days to meet celebs at these events (lesser crowds).
  • The students demanded it, so it’s BACK! For a second time, “The Films of Kevin Smith: will be presented at Central Michigan University (courtesy of the School of Broadcast & Cinematic Arts), Mount Pleasant, Michigan. When, you ask? June 1st to June 4th, from 3:30 - 6:50 p.m. each day. Films to be featured this year: “Clerks”, “Jersey Girl”, “Clerks II”, and “Zack & Miri Make a Porno”. Instructor Jeffrey Smith tells us:

“Films will be viewed through the lens of auteur theory, since that seems the most appropriate to the director/writer.

This is the second time the course will be taught, and there are, as of this writing, still seats available for this course, although not many.”

We’re awaiting some further details on how one can register for the class - Though we’re guessing a call to the University for more info couldn’t hurt. Sounds like a fun weeklong course, that’s for sure.

  • “Dogma”’s Linda Fiorentino and appear in the lineup of MSN Movies’ “Where are They Now?” file. “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” star appears in the first slot as well. In the write-up for Fiorentino, they cite evidence of her behavior on the “Dogma” set as a possible catalyst in her career slowdown.
  • We ran just a piece of Kevin’s video meet-up with Malcolm Ingram last week. Via the SModcaster user, you can see a bunch more — We’re also betting that this will be the spot to go to catch any future video snippets that accompany SModcast. With episode #100 on the approach, perhaps we’re closer to VidSmod than we think…
  • One for the archives - Paste Magazine ran a nicely positive review of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” back in the Fall around release time — Since we were following their other coverage for the film, we wanted to make sure this nice review was linked up in the archives as well.
  • For the second time in a week, the icky term “bromance” is being used with Jay & Bob - This time, Empire Magazine lists the duo as one of their “10 Greatest Movie Bromances” :

Like Pegg and Frost, Jay and Silent Bob refer to each other - well, one of them does - as ‘my hetero-life-mate’. Their double act developed over the course of four previous Smith films, but it was here, in his broadest and most outrageous comedy to date, where they took central stage, showcasing a relationship that was as fucked-up as it was tender. They’re the perfect duo.

Most Bromantic Moment: The whole thing. Theirs isn’t a relationship where an excuse must be contrived for them to have an argument, just so they can reconcile later in an emotional scene with soaring strings. These guys stick with each other through thick, thin and really, awfully, very stupidly thick.

Who’s The Beard? After a fashion, jewel thief Justice (Shannon Elizabeth), who pines after Jay, for some reason we still can’t entirely fathom.

  • It’s Easter weekend, so naturally that iconic “Mallrats” moment had to show up on the web somewhere. Total Film notes that Jay’s encounter makes the movie version one of “6 Movie Rabbits Better Than the Easter Bunny” :

Why It’s Cool: Okay, we’re breaking our rule a little here, because this really is a bloke in a bunny suit. And yes, it’s the Easter Bunny.

But we really couldn’t pass up a list of cinematic Leporidae without mentioning this poor, put-upon mall employee. Who is only trying to bring joy and laughter to local Eden Prairie children when he’s cruelly set-upon by Jay and Silent Bob. Oh, and the children he’s trying to bring joy and laughter to.

      Ungrateful little hell spawn.

  • Entertainment Weekly notes “Mallrats” ammong its list of “20 Memorable Mall Scenes” this weekend, citing it as one of Kevin’s “most quotable films”.
  • Fox News reports “Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back” was named the #4 greatest stoner movie of all time, among their list of 10. Surf on over and see if your other faves made the cut.
  • We’re very pleased to see Ben Affleck taking on a couple film roles after an acting hiatus to pursue some work behind cameras, as well as his charitable efforts around the world. Cinematrical premieres the trailer for the new Mike Judge comedy “Extract” . Affleck’s got a very different look for this one, playing the role of a stoner. And, oh yeah - it really does look HILARIOUS. Don’t miss it.
  • Here’s another trailer for ya - Watch for a glimpse of Jason Mewes in the trailer for Danny Trejo’s new flick “Vengeance”. Hey, we’re still waiting for “Machete”, by the way!
  • Box Office Mojo has the latest wordwide tally for “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”. It has now officially become the film from View Askew to cross the 40 million dollar mark worldwide.
  • Have a happy Easter, folks! We’ll see ya soon.

  • VH1’s battle of 90’s movies has sped up so fast this week that we couldn’t even keep track - The good news is, that while later rounds moved along very quickly, you helped “Clerks” continue to stay at the top! We’ve made it to the SEMIFINALS, folks. Our nemesis? “Clueless”. Tough competition as that sure is a very “90s” movie as well. We’re proud to see “Clerks” in the final four, but URGE you, no COMMAND you — To get on over there and cast your vote for “Clerks” over “Clueless” as the most 90’s movie ever! We have a pretty big voting defecit to overcome, but let’s see if we can make it happen. Hurry!
  • DC Comics reveals that they will release a beautiful HARDCOVER version of Kevin and Walt’s “Batman: Cacophony”. The book will collect issues #1-#3 (the full series) though we have no idea on inclusions of extra art, pages, etc. They had quite a few alternate covers with this book, so here’s hoping they find a way to include them all as bonus pages here. So far, here’s all we know:

      BATMAN: CACOPHONY HC
      Writer: Kevin Smith
Artists: Walter Flanagan and Sandra Hope
      Collects: BATMAN: CACOPHONY #1-3
      $19.99 US, 144 pages

  • Part SIX of Lee Stranahan’s interview with Kevin Smith hits the ‘Tube today - This 8+ minute segement focuses on “The Bright Side of the Internet” — Sites like View Askew’s, and this one! Kevin was one of the first filmmakers to embrace the internet, and here’s your backstory to all that. Pretty cool stuff.
  • Could “Earl” cross the last name off his list sooner than we expected? We’re seen scattered stories across the web reporting low ratings for the Jason Lee/Ethan Suplee comedy “My Name is Earl”. The show once celebrated big numbers, but lost some steam after the writer’s strike (which hurt a lot of quality programming). We still love the show, and would love to see it continue. Rumor has it that the FOX network may pick it up should NBC let it go at the end of this season. We’ll keep you posted. We’re still hopeful that Kevin might be asked to get involved with an episode in some capacity, maybe next year should the show survive.
  • While we’re certainly less than fanatical about all these weird new terms, such as the icky “bromance” — UK’s “The Guardian” theorizes that the film “Dogma” may have marked the start of the concept:

Over the past decade, we have seen the rise and rise of “bromance”, a genre that unashamedly celebrates the relationship between two straight men. It kicked off with 1999’s Dogma, in which Kevin Smith’s Silent Bob is introduced by Jason Mewes as “my hetero life-mate”, and arguably continued with the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

  • 360 Blog just cited Kevin Smith as their “360 Thursday Artist”, including a very nice retrospective of the man and his career so far. Nicely written, be sure to click over. We’re quite impressed at the accuracy and the way the author managed to cover it all so efficiently.

  • As promised, Kevin and Scott deliver SModcast #81 fresh to the net today, with the episode now available for your exclusive listening pleasure via Quick Stop Entertainment:

      SModcast 81: Satan’s Dookie. -

In which our heroes throw their support behind the controversial PreCrime Bureau.

The SMod is super-sized this week, too, running in at a hefty 1:11. Grab it, and enjoy some early week entertainment from Smith and Mosier.

  • “Clerks” shows up in Entertainment Weekly’s Popwatch Quote of the Day today:

”All those innocent contractors brought in to do the job were killed — casualties of a war they had nothing to do with. All right, look: you’re a roofer, some juicy government contract comes your way. You got a wife and kids, the two-story in suburbia. This is a government contract, which means all sorts of benefits. Along come these left-wing militants that blast everything within a three-mile radius with their lasers. You didn’t ask for that. You have no personal politics. You’re just trying to scrape out a living.” — Randal (Jeff Anderson), on why the destruction of the second Death Star was unfair, in Clerks.

Surf on over to watch the clip.

  • A game design contest at last week’s Game Developers Conference inspired one developer to consider using “Zack & Miri Make a Portal” as his entry. The idea didn’t pan out as licensing two different intellectual properties would have been too cost-prohibitive. Too bad - You know you’d have played.
  • Director David Wain has some nice things to say about “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” and Elizabeth Banks on his commentary track for the recently released “Role Models”:

“It [Role Models] came out the same time as Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which is, to me, a wonderful lead performance from Elizabeth Banks and if you haven’t seen it, I would highly recommend it.”

We’ve been fans of Wain’s work since way back in “The State” days, so very cool to hear that.

  • Pop Culture and movie fansite “Bag of Mad Bastads” catches up with the Bluray release of “Zack and Miri Make a Porno” and scores the flick a solid BUY IT rating.

  • We’re kicking off the ‘bites today with a bunch of video for you to enjoy. First up, Kevin’s interview with Lee Stranhan continues this week with Part 4 today, titled “The Dark Side of the Internet”. In this clip, Kevin discusses reading fan/critic reviews and comments on the web. Once again, this series remains exclusive to YouTube.

We’re told, by the way, the interview is planned to run at least 7 or 8 segments, so we’re only halfway there. Search our archives if you missed any of it — Our plan will be to write an all-inclusive post of the segments once the saga is complete, also. For now, check out Stranahan’s YouTube page for previous segments and other examples of his work.

  • Next, Corey Taylor of the (Grammy-winning) hardcore metal band, Slipknot, wants to write a song specifically for a Kevin Smith movie. Last month, he listed writing a song for a Smith flick as one of his all-time goals to achieve. Check out the video from this recent interview with WJRR radio (click the “His Influences” link and hang in ’til the end).
  • And in our final video of the day, Jason Mewes discusses adversity and redemption with “The Hour”’s George Stroumboulopoulos. This was recorded last month during his trip up to Canada. The clip runs around 13 minutes in length and features the dude in quite a fashionable cap.
  • Up-and-coming rap artist Kid Cudi, who was signed by Kanye West’s music label, had a few kind words for “Zack and Miri” in a recent blog post. Apparently he watched the film during a recent plane trip.
  • “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” is headed to DVD in Australia, and we’ve got the box art right here! Looks like folks there are going to get the awesome, uncensored Star Wars parody cover, along with all the region one extras on this 2-disc set. Nicely done — And certainly something you collectors may want to pick up as well.

Kevin Breaks the Silence on “Dicks”…

March 13th @ 8:21 am | 1 Comment » | Scooped by Chuck K

  • Kevin conducts a new 12-minute interview with The Huffington Post where he speaks, for the first time, on being hired for the directing gig on “A Couple of Dicks”. The clip was filmed in Kevin’s home (check out a bit of his staggering DVD library behind him) and shows his excitement over the project:

“You know, you caught me at an interesting moment”, he says. “I don’t have anything to promote and I have a lot on my mind.” Even though he’s one of the most self-deprecating people you’re ever likely to meet, Smith isn’t exaggerating. The dude has a lot on his mind.

Of particular interest, Kevin tackles the topic of PG-13 vs. R-rated films in this segment, which is currently under discussion with “A Couple of Dicks”. Right now, the script, and the way that Kevin and the cast want to shoot it, we’ve got an R-rating due to the language included. However, it was also suggested that the studio will want a PG-13 to appeal to a wider audience. The R-rating is risky, but Kevin, in the full clip, reveals that he and the cast decided to take the risk (and the pay cuts) to make a pure, script-faithful version:

Youtube has the complete Part 1 segment (12 minutes) , the article has a summary as well as a sinippet. The video is titled “Part One”, which indicates more is on the way.

  • Kevin Watches The “Watchmen” - And Can Finally Talk About It!

    March 13th @ 8:19 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Chuck K

    • We’ve been jealous of Kevin for almost half a year, since he revealed he had seen an early cut of “Watchmen” — Now, the world has watched the film and can join Kevin in revealing their thoughts on the film version of the most acclaimed graphic novel of all-time.

/Film features an extended podcast review of the film, where Kevin joins the staff for their /FilmCast segment for a discussion on the film that runs almost a full TWO HOURS (Yep, ALL on “Watchmen”!). You know Kevin loves the film, but now is your chance to hear much more specific reasons behind his thoughts on “Watchmen”, comparisons from the book to the movie, what was cut, what was changed, levels of violence, and a LOT lot more.

Note - The link at /Film includes an MP3 download for the complete podcast, but there is also an MP3 with ONLY the “Watchmen” discussion. At first we thought we grabbed the wrong MP3, but the “Watchmen” piece is indeed an hour and forty six minutes itself.

What’s our take? Amazingly faithful film — Worth a second viewing. The biggest criticism we see is that there are some slower-paced moments, especially in the final third, but comparing it to the book, that’s really what “Watchmen” is. While personally the ending changes don’t work for me, the great achievement of the filmmakers here is the fact that “Watchmen” is truly, beat for beat, the novel brought to life, in the proper time period, the proper sequence, and some of the most perfect page-to-screen translation you will EVER see. See it again this weekend.
