Smith/Stranahan Interview: The Complete Saga…
- With this week’s final 10th segment, interviewer Lee Stranahan closes the door on his fantastic interview segement with Kevin Smith, which he conducted in Smith’s home earlier this year. It’s been a fantastic series, covering a lot of familiar topics, and featuring Kevin speaking with incredible frankness and honesty — Not that he’s not usually like that in all interviews, but somehow, Stranahan managed to find Kevin opening up in a way we’d never seen before at a critical juncture in his career. We love the split of topics, and have enjoyed these so much, we think they’re worth another look, and definitely a permanent place here in the News Askew archives.
Today’s 10th segement, “Stuff from the Cutting Room Floor”, is just that – Outtakes and moments that just didn’t fit into the standard interview structure, presented here just as a nice bookend to the series. If you’ve missed some previous segments, or just want to enjoy them all over again, we’re happy to present an ordered master index of the full interview clips straight ahead.Part 1 : Selling Out And Salty Language

Part 4 : The Dark Side Of The Internet
Part 5 : The Curse Of Chasing Amy
Part 6 : Bright Side of The Internet
Part 7 : Talking To People He Wrote
Part 8 : Gretzky, Gratitude & God
Part 9 : Risking His Life & Starting A New One

- The great character actor Kevin Pollak has arrived on the set of “A Couple of Dicks”, as evidenced by this twitted photo of he and the director behind bars.
- Tom Clocker of the Baltimore Examiner has some high hopes for the cast and director behind “A Couple of Dicks”. Here’s a snippet:
“This seems to be a very unique group for this type of film, and with Smith at the helm, one thing is for certain: there will be plenty of laughs. Morgan is a tried and true comedic presence on screen, and when looking at his older works, Willis too knows how to handle comedy. It’s hard to see how this trio could work together and not put together a great film.” - Kevin quietly made another call-in appearance on the radio with 102.1 The Edge’s Dean Blundell Show on Thursday to promote the street hockey event this weekend. Grab an MP3 of the call direct from their website or subscribe via iTunes.
- Check out “Fanboys”, now on DVD, which features an extended scene of the Kevin Smith/Jason Mewes cameo.
- A new Austin-based indie filming, titled “Funny Books”, sounds a lot like “Clerks” in a comic book store to us.

- We’re thrilled to see that Kevin Pollak announced he’s been offered and accepted a role in “A Couple of Dicks”. Pollak twittered the news late yesterday, and /Film picked it right up. Pollak has been turning in fantastic performances for years, and will be an absolute perfect fit for the script, in any of the 3 major uncast roles they mention. We’re secretly hoping it’s the sports memorabilia-obsessed gangster role, though the verdict’s still out. We’ll keep ya posted. Wow, what a cool cast this is shaping up to be. Quite possibly this will be the best onscreen ensemble you see this year. Follow Mr. Pollak’s updates on Twitter.
- The ‘Mos is BACK! Smodcast #87 rolls on up this week, featuring Smith and Mosier once again doing what they do best – Making you laugh with yet another hour plus of free audio entertainment, brought to you exclusively over at Quick Stop Entertainment:
SModcast 87: Tapoo – In which a simple concept slips from our heroes’ grasps.
It’s a free MP3 download, folks. Podcasters should see it showing in iTunes later in the week, as always. We’re streaming this baby down right now, grab a copy and listen along with us. With the new film underway, the schedule for SModcast may wind up being erratic, though Smith & Mosier WILL present the first-ever LIVE SModcast during this weekend’s street hockey tourny in Brantford, Ontario. Rumor has it that SMod will not be released online, so you gotta be there in person to see it. The weather’s great. Get on up to Ontario for some hockey and SModcsat fun this weekend. - Spotted by a fan: A flick being sold on DVD at Wal-Mart titled “High Hopes” and starring Jay Mewes. We’re told the film is none other than 2006’s “Nice Guys”, just repackaged with a new name. The pot-themed film has been MIA for a while with many folks on the lookout for a release date. Looks like this quiet direct to DVD offering can now be picked up. If anyone takes a look at it before we do, let us know what ya think.

- We’ve had so much male-heavy cast news for “A Couple of Dicks”, though today Cinemablend confirms the first female casting, “Nacho Libre”’s Ana de la Reguera. Reguera has signed on to play a woman rescued by the central cop characters (Tracy Morgan and Bruce Willis) who may help them find millions in laundered drug money. Production starts TOMORROW in the NYC area!
- The documentary for the highly anticipated “Chasing Amy” Bluray set for this year is now being called “Tracing Amy” according to IMDB. The great Zak Knutson and Joey Figueroa are once again at the helm, so you can bet on another masterpiece to highlight the ultimate edition of “Amy”. The IMDB lists a release date of August 4, 2009, which MAY also be the “Amy” Bluray date, though we cannot confirm just yet.
- We are just loving this fan-made clip, taking audio from SModcast and mixing it with the magic of the Sims 2 to bring a recent Smith/Mosier skit to animated life. Take a couple minutes out of your day and click over for some laughs. And of course, don’t miss full audio editions of SModcast, almost weekly, exclusively at Quick Stop Entertainment.
- Speaking of SMod and the love for it, the author of this piece at Lockergnome’s blog network not only loves the podcast, but has a lot of excitement and optimism towards the next chapter of Kevin’s career. Here’s a couple snips:
“It’s been roughly two years since Mr. Kevin (”the Clerks. guy”) Smith and his other hetero life-mate (and producing partner), Mr. Scott Mosier, launched their own podcast series, entitled SModcast. Since then they’ve posted seventy-six pieces of what I can only describe as some of the most absurd, silly, raunchy, and down-right brilliantly funny audio bliss ever! And since that time I’ve been a devout listener, always waiting patiently each week for their next new posting — sometimes even having to wait up until a month or so for a new one to show up (I dare not complain, Smith’s a busy man). For those of you unfamiliar with SModcast, the premise is as follows. Each week Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier find time amongst themselves to sit down and, well, shoot the shit for lack of a better term. In the beginning each show lasted roughly fifty-two minutes, plus or minus, with only a few notable exceptions. Once the series began to reach double digits, however, the show began to change up. SModcast was created partially as an attempt by Smith for he and Mosier to get together each week and catch up on things, but as the show progressed it became apparent that such a notion wasn’t always feasible. And so with it’s thirteenth episode, “SFodcast (or SWodcast),” SModcast found itself with an absent Scott Mosier and special guest, sitting in, Walt Flanagan (”Fanboy,” to the fanboys), one of Smith’s best friends from his youth. And while there is not, and probably never will be, a SModcast without Smith himself, we found that from time to time there will be one without Mosier, at which time we will be treated to a special guest…”
Read the whole article over at Lockergnome. - Widely read gossip site PerezHilton.com even picked up on the “A Couple of Dicks” casting news last week. Good exposure, and so far it seems they approve.
- Kevin is mentioned in a VideoETA article citing the most original filmmakers of past decades:
“…These filmmakers such as Kevin Smith, Quentin Tarantino and M. Night Shyamalan proved that you didn’t need computers or big bangs to be able to reach the audience. These filmmakers brought a real renaissance to independent film and set up a nice dichotomy in the decade between the decadence of special effects-driven event movies and personal talkies of smaller films.” - “A Comic Book Review” takes a positive look at the awesome 3-part “Batman: Cacophony” comic from Smith & Flanagan.
- And finally today, in non-Askew but great TV news, anyone else stoked for the “Breaking Bad” finale tonight? Season 2’s 13th and final episode airs tonight, capping what has been one of the most fantastic seasons of TV in recent memory. If you’re not watching this show, you should be. Catch up and get on board. Tonight on AMC.
Video: Kevin Chats with the NHL!
- The NHL website has posted two new video segments with Kevin, taped at The Rock in Newark, NJ as the Devils participated in this year’s NHl playoffs. In the first segment, Kevin appears on the pregame show to chat up hockey and his love of the game, his Devils playoff experience, the street hockey tourney, and getting free stuff. In the second, you’re treated to the view from his luxurious suite, where he took up residence for every home game of the series, inviting several family members and friends along the way (with your author being a lucky participant for one of the early games, thanks again Mr. Smith).
View each video direct from the NHL website by clicking the links below:We’d also like to take this moment to promote the NHL and the wonderful game of ice hockey — Pass the word on and check out some playoff games, or at least the Stanley Cup finals this year. And congrats to our local hometown Hershey Bears here in PA, who are once again going to the Calder Cup finals this year. Go Bears!

- Silent Bob very rightfully makes IFC’s list of top “Silent Sidekicks”:
Silent Bob in “Clerks,” et. al.Has any character since the dawn of sound film appeared in more movies and said less than Silent Bob? The larger, quieter half of Kevin Smith’s non-dynamic duo appeared in six of the director’s films, and also popped up in cameos in Wes Craven’s “Scream 3″ and Kyle Newman’s “Fanboys.” Over 15 years, Silent Bob’s appearances have codified into a recognizable pattern: the character stands by wordlessly for most of the movie while his drug dealer partner Jay (Jason Mewes) spouts one profanity after another, until the narrative presents him an opportunity to chime in with a single bit of practical advice. And the character hasn’t simply endured; he’s proved surprisingly malleable. In “Clerks,” Smith affects a believably low-life-ian scowl, but by “Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back,” he’s mugging and gesticulating like a well-trained mime. He’s proven adaptable to just about any style of film Smith can write: in “Mallrats,” he’s an engineering genius with a cartoonish, Batman-style utility belt; in the next movie, “Chasing Amy,” he delivers a surprisingly mature monologue about the pitfalls of male insecurity. Each View Askew movie announced where Jay and Bob would pop up next, but the last one, 2006’s “Clerks II,” warned that “for now, they’re taking it easy.” Given how durable the characters have been thus far, a return seems inevitable, if not imminent.
Kevin has continually stated that it’s highly unlikely that the character will return in live action again, but you just never know — We wouldn’t put them past another possible cameo somewhere down the line.
- Filmmaker Gavin Michael Booth interviewed Kevin Smith a few months back while he was in Toronto. He’s now been kind enough to share a couple of clips from his “How Many Days” series via YouTube:
- And finally today, for those of you “Chasing Amy” fans still wondering just where the heck Jughead’s crown came from, check out this in-depth report (possibly TOO in-depth) of the history of this famous headwear.

- Kevin’s last tweet about Carnegie tix listed that 1195 seats are left to sell out the place — Though we imagine numbers have gone down since then. Keep passing the word around. We’re also betting that a lot of New Yorkers are last-minute types, and may pack the events as the date draws closer. We’re betting on a sell-out. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t reserve seats NOW!
- Audio from Kevin’s Thursday appearance on Canada’s Dean Blundell Show is now available for your online download. You can grab it on their Podcast index page http://www.edge.ca/DJsandShows/Podcasts.aspx (dated 5.7 – “Kevin Smith Meets Adrian”), via MP3 Direct , or though iTunes. Enjoy as Kevin takes on this very strange regular caller to the program.
- Watch for a quick Jay Mewes cameo in this trailer for “Degrassi Goes Hollywood”, airing this summer on “The N”. CTV has a few more details on the production as well — We seem to recall Kevin being around when they filmed this one, though have not heard any confirmation on HIS possible appearance in the pic. Just Mewes (so far).
- Here’s an interesting way to tie a news story about a flood into View Askew – Mention Kevin’s famous story about getting his start with “Clerks” soon after experiencing a flood of his own. This, from the Fargo, North Dakota area:
For the people who had property damaged during the flood there’s a lot of talk of what was lost.Furniture. Carpet. Televisions. Entire houses. Bootleg videos of “BJ and the Bear.”
Whatever the flood stole from you – your ambivalence toward the Red River – there’s something to be gained from this ordeal; a career as a semi-famous filmmaker who just might be the voice of a generation.
Lost in the discussion about his movies is the fact that auteur Kevin Smith started his career because of a flood.
The guy who made low-budget film chic with his 1994 movie “Clerks” paid for part of that movie’s production expenses with FEMA money that was given to him after a flood destroyed some of his well-worn Volkswagen vehicles.
Smith used that money, the ransom from selling some comic books and credit cards to finance “Clerks,” the dialogue-heavy movie about lazy convenience store employees that became a benchmark of ’90s culture.
Since then, Smith has made several feature films, become a slacker icon and, at least to me, proved he – not Kurt Cobain – was the voice of the generation that came of age in the ’90s.
Would Smith have attained that stature without a flood and some FEMA cash? Probably. But with basements that still smell like the Red River puked in them, it’s more fun to think that the flood made the man.
Moral of the story: Grab that FEMA money and make a movie. Or write a book. Or design a video game. Or get the stink out of your basement.
- In other press, The Times, a South African paper, posts a small interview/article with Kevin for some “Porno” promo, though we think this could have been put together from a past junket. Nothing too new, but worth a click for the curious.
- For something that looks a bit more recent, New York’s Daily Star “Teen Talk” movie reviewer takes a brief look at the films of Kevin Smith. See ya next time — Kevin promises a new SModcast will be up and running shortly. So stay tuned.
