- High Def Digest has Sony’s official ‘Dogma’ Blu-Ray specs for us today:
“As we first reported in December, Sony announced it would bow the controversial religious satire ‘Dogma’ on March 11, though initial specs were sparce. Now the full details are in, and typical of a Smith disc release, the Blu-ray will come loaded with making-of material and deleted footage.
Porting over many (but not all) of the features from Sony’s previous two-disc DVD edition, the Blu-ray version of ‘Dogma’ will contain two audio commentaries (the first with Smith and cast members, the second a technical track), 100 minutes of deleted scenes (with intros), and a “Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash” mock commercial.
Tech specs boast 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and uncompressed PCM 5.1 Surround audio in English and French.
Suggested retail for the Blu-ray has been set at $28.99.”
To us, sounds like a direct copy of the Dogma Special Edition DVD. We’re assuming the Blu-Ray will afford us a better visual and sound experience, though we’re assuming all extra material will remain as it was before. If we learn of any NEW material created for this release, we’ll let you know — However, our assumption for now is that it will be the same contents as the previous release.

- By way of the WWWBoard, Kevin reports that the next “Evening With” DVD (which may not actually have that title, but the one that was taped on Kev’s 37th birthday) may be set for an APRIL 2008 release date. We were there live for this one, and can tell you with all certainty that the DVD will be a must-have for the collection, if even for the Bruce Willis story ALONE. We’ll keep you posted on the status on what’s sure to be View Askew’s first big DVD release of 2008.
- Kevin makes Maxim Magazine’s list of of the Top 10 Movie Sidekicks, standing in the #6 spot:
6. Silent Bob
Sidekick to: Jay
Even though Bob is usually overshadowed by the nonsensical shit-talking of his weed-dealing counterpart, he has the uncanny ability to dole out sage advice that Confucius would quote on his MySpace page. Plus, he has that sweet utility belt and is friends with a monkey. Snoochey boochey.
- Congrats to longtime View Askewer JASON LEE for a fantastic opening weekend for “Alvin & The Chipmunks”, 45 million dollars! Lee plays the Dave Seville to the CGI-generated chipmunks, and celebrates a much larger than expected take at the ticket windows this weekend. We’re happy for Lee, and look forward to future films stemming from his “My Name is Earl” acclaim.
- And finally today, in happy (or to some of us, sad) news — Ali Larter (”Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”) has gotten engaged — And not to either of us! Seriously, congrats to Ali on her engagement to longtime boyfriend, actor Hayes MacArthur.

- Check out this nicely crafted piece of new Deviant Art by Denmark artist “Humon”, done in the Clerks TAS style. He images what it would be like would the main cast have attended a gay pride parade. Humon says:
Ones again, say hallo to my stupid sense of humor.
Because of all the gay jokes, I was wondering what the Clerks guys would behave and look like if they were gay and walking in a Gay Pride Parade or something like that, and I could just see them doing, well, this
I was going to have Leonardo, Plug, Steve-Dave and Fanboy in there too, but Leonardo is gay so that wouldn’t be funny. Steve-Dave and Fanboy was supposed to be yelling at some straight people in the background, accuseing them for being homophobes, but I just couldn’t get them right. At all.
Oh, and Randal is pushing Dante.
- Sony has announced that Dogma will be coming to the Bluray high definition format in a couple months — February 12, 2008! This will make it the cleanest, best copy of the film to own, if you have the means.
- More of the ‘bites are coming later today — Watch this space!

- MTV Movies runs a story with an interesting quote from Kevin today — Seems that ownership issues may tie up that “Clerks: Sell Out” animated film we had been looking forward to seeing. However, since Kevin does own Jay & Silent Bob as characters, there’s a potential that the duo could someday headline their own animated project. Here’s the text:
Kevin Smith Hopes To Make Jay And Silent Bob Animated Film
Randall and Dante, the sad sack titular clerks at the heart of Kevin Smith’s breakthrough first film, may have sold their last pack of Nails cigarettes – for a little while anyway – with the long-rumored straight-to-DVD animated film “Clerks: Sell Out” deader than poor Julie Dwyer, regretted Smith.
“The Clerks cartoon movie we’re talking about doing is kinda held up by the fact that Disney owned the ‘Clerks’ cartoon,” Smith said of the series, which aired for only two episodes on ABC way back in 2000. “And I don’t think they get along with the Weinstein team very much anymore. So we would have to do it without them, and that’s really not an option. So I kinda don’t foresee that happening.”
But with one potential animated film down, Smith may turn his attention to another, he revealed. After all, Randall and Dante aren’t the only reason to visit a Quik Stop.
“I own the characters Jay and Silent Bob so, conceivably, we could do it straight-to-DVD animated Bluntman and Chronic or something like that,” he enthused. “I would write it, turn it over to guys that do animation. I wouldn’t be against that at all.”
To us, this sounds like one of those little thoughts that just came out and might be taken TOO seriously by those who read it — Still, it’s nice to hear an update on the animated View Askew world, and to know that Kevin hasn’t completely put such a project off the radar completely. We just think it’ll be a while with things focusing on the live-action realm in 2008, first.

- Our pal Ben Affleck’s directorial debut, “Gone Baby Gone”, has been benefitting from great word of mouth from those who have screened it early. Today, Collider.com provides us with FIVE NEW CLIPS from the film, the first we’ve seen clippage (other than the trailer) anywhere. The film hits theaters everywhere on October 19th, just a few short weeks from now.
- In DVD news today, Jason Lee’s UNDERDOG arrives December 18th. If you missed it in the theater, your kids may dig it — Plus, you get to hear ‘ol Lee throughout. And speaking of Lee, the great Season Two of “My Name Is Earl” is now available everywhere — The Target edition features a lenticular cover and a mini Earl poster. The cover, which features the Earl characters as cartoon characters, is way cool.
- And finally today, in Retro news, it’s great when this stuff comes back to us — We promoted a Dogma panel with Chris Rock and Kevin on Charlie Rose way back in 1999 — Now, that very show is available on YouTube! Skip to around 25 minutes into the program for the interview. We’ll see you again soon, thanks for dropping by today.

- Kevin made another in-studio appearance on XM’s “Opie And Anthony” program this week, and our ‘ol pal Will wasn’t far behind with a complete capture of the 5 hour program — Minus commercials, of course. Tune into the 64k mp3 stream , or download it for later — Listen to Kevin hang with the guys and bring up the possibility of joining the XM family himself!
Will’s always good enough to do these captures, and never even asks us for a plug, but we’re giving him one anyway, darn it — RadioAskew is now back with some new programming, so be sure to take a listen to his professional podcast at the official site - All the latest pop culture stuff with an Askew slant to it.
- In his blog, “The Criterion Contraption”, Matthew Dessem has revisited Chasing Amy and writes a stellar review, along with tons of photos, observations, comedy, and insight. We’ve been running this site since “Amy” hit theaters, and we gotta say, this is a very in-depth interesting piece on the flick. The article may get a bit overly critical at points (seemingly fogetting the budget and crew this classic was made with), but is overall done with the love of a fan who has truly watched the movie very closely — Maybe even more than we have. Nah. Don’t miss your chance to check it out, the Criterion Contraption #74. Credit for the discovery goes to our scooper and Cinematical.

- GREAT news about the DVD release of “Live Free or Die Hard” comes to us via Movieweb today. While it seems that the previously mentioned Blu-Ray version will only include the theaterical version of the film, there WILL be a fully UNRATED cut of the flick as part of the two-disc special edition on standard DVD. Hooray! Not only that, but disc two of said edition will indeed house the complete conversation held on the Fox lot between Bruce and Kevin. The running time’s listed at 23 minutes, so it’s a bit shorter than was filmed, we believe, but still, better than nothing!

- Coming Soon checks in with the DVD specs of the upcoming Blu-Ray release of “Live Free or Die Hard” (November 20th in North America, an earlier October 28th internationally). The big extra we’re all waiting for is the extended chat that Kevin held with Bruce Willis on the FOX lot, though no specific word on its inclusion here. Of interest, though is an exclusive video game that will only be available on the Blu-ray disc, which features (we believe, at least) Kevin as The Warlock:
…actor and director commentaries and the exclusive high definition BD-Java multi-level strategy game “Black Hat Intercept!”
“Black Hat Intercept!” begins with a warning from ‘The Warlock’ (cult-classic writer, producer and director Kevin Smith) that a computer virus has been placed inside an unwitting Internet company’s mainframe by the infamous cyber-terrorist, Thomas Gabriel. As the team leader from inside the surveillance van, players must guide an agent into the building, outwit the building’s security systems and personnel without being detected and then wipe the hard drive clean before the virus destroys the U.S.
Additionally, the BD debut of the “Die Hard Trilogy” comes locked and loaded with numerous bonus features including deleted scenes, featurettes, actor and director commentaries, visual effect breakdowns, alternate endings, side-by-side comparisons and much, much more.
We were hopeful for an edgier cut of the film as well, after the whole R vs. PG-13 debate, though it looks to not be the case here — We’ll see that stuff as extra scenes. No word on Kevin’s involvement with the DVD commentary due to his cameo role, though the guy never met a DVD track he didn’t like — We’re hopeful that the man’s involved as much as possible on this one. We’ll keep you posted as we learn more.
And by the way — The disc will also support the new D-Box chair which, believe it or not, rumbles and moves in sync with the film. Basically, it turns your living room into a ride! Pretty nifty, though at over $10,000 for the system, not an accessory we’ll be able to afford anytime soon. Ah, technology.
- Some kind, albeiet brief, words about Clerks II’s DVD release in South Africa are here courtesty of the “Tonight” website.
- Aint It Cool runs a positive review of “Gone Baby Gone” including some praise for director Ben Affleck (minor spoilers in their review) :
If this is an indication of his skills, I’d like to see more from Affleck. He has pace, shots, and construction down.
- And finally today, has the Flying Car become the Flying Saucer? We’ll take two. See ya next time!

- Two fresh DVDs arrived at the News Askew offices this week, and we’re ripping through the shrink wrap as we speak. “Small Town, Gay Bar” has been out for a couple of weeks now, and is available for purchase through the Stash SIGNED by director Malcolm Ingram. This memorable documentary features a bunch of extras which we’ll be diving into for a closer look. In the meantime, check out a brief mixed review of the film through JoBlo. The film really is quite compelling, and crafted and edited together very nicely.
And then we have something we’re quite excited to see, as we haven’t seen it before - Marvel’s “Then and Now” Q&A with Stan Lee and Joe Quesada, hosted by Kevin Smith, is now available for purchase! The disc contains of course the full program along with heaps of extras, including bonus interviews, behind-the-scenes, and more. You can purchase your copy via the Then And Now site, with proceeds benefitting the awesome Hero organizataion. This one’s another must-have for your View Askew DVD collection.
Watch for more in-depth coverage on both of these discs here at News Askew next week.
