  • Though there are no listings for the film on their official movies page , some readers caught “Jersey Girl” late on TBS this week. If anyone watches the new edit, and notices any fun or interesting omissions or changes, we’d love to hear about it. If we hear of a definite upcoming airing, we’ll let you know.
  • Brian Lynch’s “Everybody’s Dead”, which at one point was set as a possible follow-up to the View Askew rarity “Big Helium Dog”, has come to life in comic book form. Issue #2 has now arrived in stores and is celebrating very good reviews. If you’re a fan of comics, zombies, and of course, many laughs, this is a book worth looking into. Details at the Myspace page. Don’t see it? Ask your local comic shop where it’s at!
  • Another good reason to visit the Secret Stash inside Laser Blazer in Los Angeles! On May 7th, they’re hosting a live signing with comic legend Jim Krueger. Stop in, get your book signed, and then shop all the fantasic deals on DVDs and View Askew swag. Oh, and of course, take a look at the coolest View Askew prop museum on the west coast!
  • With a new “Harold & Kumar” flick in theaters, stoner flicks come up on the web this week, with Jay & Silent Bob appearing on Bullz-Eye’s list of 13 Cinematic Stoners in addition to the guys who went to White Castle.

  • While we visited the Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back Bluntcave set and had a blast, we couldn’t help but wishing we’d got to hang out for the days shooting the jewel heist by Chrissy, Sissy, Missy, and Justice. Entertainment Weekly seems to share our thoughts this week, including the lovely ladies in a new photo gallery titled Kiss Me Deadly: 25 Best Big-Screen Bad Girls:

      CHRISSY, SISSY, MISSY, AND JUSTICE

Ali Larter, Eliza Dushku, Jennifer Schwalbach, Shannon Elizabeth

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001)

Hot jewel thieves pretending to be animal rights activists? Who may or may not be lesbians? Yes, please.

  • TBS Superstation reports that “Jersey Girl” will soon come to their network. This will be the basic cable premiere of the flick, in what we assume will be a new, edited for TV format. No showtimes or dates yet, but we’ll let ya know when we hear more.
  • Clerks II rightfully hits Cinematical’s list of “Deliberately Offensive (But Fun) Comedies”, with the following write-up:

      3. Clerks 2

How could I not include a film that caused a well-known critic to storm out in mid-screening because of possible interspecies erotica? A film that includes a character trying to “take back” a certain racial slur? During a plane ride last week, I decided to forego the in-flight movie selection (Juno) in favor of this movie … for some inexplicable reason the Kevin Smith DVD was in my laptop bag. When the flight attendant interrupted me and I paused the movie, it froze on a screenshot of Randal with that slur visible on the back of his Mooby’s shirt. I realized that the image would be terrific to post as the photo at the top of this list, but unfortunately it proves my point a little too well.

  • And finally today, perhaps another comic creator sneaking a “Clerks” reference in there — In the latest issue of “She-Hulk” (#28), She Hulk asks her Skrull friend Jaz how many partners she’s been with, her response, 5 simultaneously, but 37 in all. Huh. Have a weekend, folks.

  • One more we missed from the big Wizard 200th issue — One feature is a countdown of events that have impacted the comics industry since 1991. Kevin’s run on Daredevil comes in big at number 10. Scan evidence above. The article cites Kevin as a trailblazer for bringing other big TV and film writers into the comics industry.
  • On Monday, April 21 at 2:15, the Nashville Film Festival will host a panel for Actors-Turned-Directors, featuring Chasing Amy’s own Joey Lauren Adams. If you’re in the area, we highly recommend attending this rare chance to see the lovely and talented Ms. Adams in person. Nashville seems like a great place to be a View Askew fan these days!
  • Agent DVD is having a poll on the greatest DVD franchise, and the View Askewniverse is included in the “Comedy” category. Get on over and vote for us!

  • Congrats to “Zack And Miri Make a Porno” star Seth Rogen, who recently won ShoWest’s “2008 Comedy Star of the Year” award. Thanks to the wonders of YouTube, you can now watch his entire acceptance speech. As always, Seth remains humble, takes control of the room, and gives a very funny speech.
  • The always on top of it /film, FirstShowing and Cinematical have caught up with blurbs on the latest news on “Zack And Miri”, Kevin’s release date announcement and a few details. Nothing new there, but we always think it’s cool to see what the other sites are saying out there.
  • Last night, the LOGO channel ran Malcolm Ingram’s documentary “Small Town, Gay Bar”, which we missed mentioning here. We certainly do apologize for that. While we believe the channel censors content and runs ads, this was the first time the film will have aired on non-premium cable, as far as we know. Sorry if you missed it, though hopefully you’ve all checked out the DVD by now of this View Askew-produced gem. Most cable and satellite companies are carrying the LOGO channel now, geared towards the gay and lesbian community. If we see the flick show up in the local listings again, we’ll let you know.
  • And finally today, a little late, but EASTER EGG ALERT! In the latest issue of “Angel: After the Fall” (#5), the new Angel comic book series being written by Brian Lynch, page 2’s top panel features a demon Jay and Silent Bob hanging around a block of stores. This is the first known View Askew easter egg to show up in the Buffyverse anywhere, so kudos to Lynch for having them work it in! Check out the shot above. Catch ya back here soon.

“Flanagan, Johnson like the bizarre”

March 3rd @ 6:20 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Karla, Robb J

  • The Asbury Park Press does it again, with another memorable article from Red Bank — This time, the great Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson are the subjects. The piece discusses the historic Red Bank Stash and their work on two books, “Karney” and “War of the Undead”, both available for sale everywhere (including the Stash, of course):

      Flanagan, Johnson like the bizarre

IT’S NOT OFTEN THAT A customer can walk into a comic book shop and purchase a work from one of the men who had a hand in creating it.

However, that is just the experience comic fans can have at Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash at 35 Broad St. in Red Bank. Store manager and Middletown resident Walt Flanagan, 40, and Highlands resident Bryan Johnson, 40, have created two miniseries, 2005’s “Karney” and 2007’s “War of the Undead,” each on sale on the shelves of the store known as “The Stash.”

The pair met in 1978, Johnson said, after Flanagan moved from Woodbridge to Highlands, and it was Flanagan who introduced Johnson to comic books.

“Walter’s always been into comics,” Johnson said. “In fact, I’d say Walter got me into comics. I bounce in and out. Sometimes I get interested, sometimes not.”

Explaining his love for the medium, Flanagan said, “The art and the characters drew me to comics early on and I never lost my passion for it.”

The pair first met local filmmaker Kevin Smith around 1988 when Smith got a job at the Highlands Recreation Center, where Flanagan worked.

Flanagan has worked for the Stash, owned by Smith, since it opened on Monmouth Street in 1997 (it moved to Broad Street in 1999), while Johnson moved to Los Angeles to work at Smith’s West Coast store for a few years before returning to New Jersey.

Both “Karney,” in which a collection of sideshow performers terrorize a small rural community, and “War of the Undead,” which features such classic monsters as Frankenstein and the Wolf Man battling zombie Nazis at the tail end of World War II, were written by Johnson and drawn by Flanagan.

“I’d say we share a love of the bizarre, like the decidedly not mainstream,” Johnson said.

“We grew up in the ’70s, it was really a decade of weird movies,” said the writer, citing “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark” (1973) and “Race with the Devil” (1975) as influences.

According to Johnson, when it comes to collaboration, “Basically, Walt says, “This is what I want to draw, this is kind of the story I want to do,’ and we come up with a synopsis and Walter basically draws whatever he wants and then I’ll go back and put dialogue in.”

Flanagan said inspiration for “War of the Undead” came from “just a big love of the Universal monsters and just wanting to draw a book where they were forced into the role of being somewhat heroes rather than monsters.” Not coincidentally, the Wolf Man in the book hails from Highlands.

      “Undead” sequel, Marvel pitch

The pair said they plan on releasing a sequel to “War of the Undead” this year and hope to pitch a one-off issue to Marvel Comics based on the Legion of Monsters from the 1970s.

When asked if their cameo roles in Smith films such as “Mallrats” and “Dogma” have turned them into local celebrities, Flanagan said, ” “A fan who knows his stuff will recognize you, but I certainly don’t get recognized outside the store.”

That lack of notoriety can result in some happy situations at the store for Flanagan, as his and Johnson’s works share shelf space with the Marvel and DC classics.

“That’s real cool, when someone comes in and buys (one of the comics) and has no idea that the guy who’s selling it to them did it,” he said.

Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash is at 35 Broad St., Red Bank. Call (732) 758-0508.

For more information on “Karney” and “War of the Undead,” visit http://www.idwpublishing.com.

We highly recommend both books, and especially suggest you stop by The Stash in person, where the guys will be happy to sign ‘em for ya if you’re lucky enough to catch them behind the counter. We’ll be watching for the “War” sequel, as well.

  • We’re quite proud of Brian Lynch, best known for writing-directing the View Askew rarity “Big Helium Dog” — His latest stint has him running the “show” for Angel’s new season in comic book form, as the writer of the books. Three episodes/issues have now hit the stands, and we gotta tell you, if you’re a Buffy/Angel fan and you’re missing these, shame on you. Not only are they fantastic, but Mr. Lynch’s involvement alone should have piqued your interest by now. To learn more, check out a recent interview which Aint It Cool held with the man. The interview not only covers Angel, but a TON of his other projects, including “Everybody’s Dead”, a project we’ve been talking about almost as long as this site has existed.
  • And finally today, “Zack & Miri Make a Porno” is listed in a new Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article regarding films now shooting (or shooting soon) in and around the Pittsburgh, PA area. Sounds like the city is becoming a bit more popular as an economical option to shoot in. See? View Askew Productions knows what they’re doing! Catch ya next time…

  • SModcast continues this week with the second of the Red Bank episodes with Walt and Bry. And man, is this a great one. Listen to some totally candid stuff from the slightly off-mic Bryan Johnson who talks about his current medications. Fantastic stuff. Once again, SModcast proves it is a podcast like no other. Episode 35, titled “Dr. Smith and the Medicine Show” is now available exclusively via Quick Stop Entertainment and well worth your downloading and listening time. We can’t get enough. Don’t take our word for it though, check it out FREE today.
  • Jay is listed as a guest at this year’s “FX Show Toy and Comic Convention” in Orlando, FL. The con dates are January 25-27, 2008, and it all goes down at at the Orange County Convention Center. FX usually really comes through with their guests, so we’re expecting this will come through. We’ll keep you posted, of course, as this is the first we have heard of this booking.
  • Are the artists of “World War Hulk Frontline” from Marvel big “My Name Is Earl” fans? Check out this scan of issue 4, and see if two of these onlookers don’t resemble Earl and Darnell.
  • And finally today, a blast from the past — We’ve told you about Kevin protesting Dogma, but have you ever SEEN it? The famous News 12 footage is now available online and worth a look — Yes, Kevin protested his own film, and the news crew didn’t even know it. Classic stuff, dating back almost 10 years now. Ah, those were the days! We’ll see ya next time, with a new interview and much more.

The DVD Reviews Are Coming!

August 25th @ 10:03 am | No Comments » | Scooped by Brad & Chris, Cole R

  • Two fresh DVDs arrived at the News Askew offices this week, and we’re ripping through the shrink wrap as we speak. “Small Town, Gay Bar” has been out for a couple of weeks now, and is available for purchase through the Stash SIGNED by director Malcolm Ingram. This memorable documentary features a bunch of extras which we’ll be diving into for a closer look. In the meantime, check out a brief mixed review of the film through JoBlo. The film really is quite compelling, and crafted and edited together very nicely.

And then we have something we’re quite excited to see, as we haven’t seen it before - Marvel’s “Then and Now” Q&A with Stan Lee and Joe Quesada, hosted by Kevin Smith, is now available for purchase! The disc contains of course the full program along with heaps of extras, including bonus interviews, behind-the-scenes, and more. You can purchase your copy via the Then And Now site, with proceeds benefitting the awesome Hero organizataion. This one’s another must-have for your View Askew DVD collection.

Watch for more in-depth coverage on both of these discs here at News Askew next week.

Kevin In San Diego: Panel Info!

July 7th @ 2:02 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Alonso Duralde

  • Just three weeks to go until the world famous San Diego Comic-Con, who have now posted the official schedule. This is probably the biggest and best comics and entertainment event of the year. Kevin is once again a featured guest this year, and without a major film release to get in the way, we’re betting he’ll be there EARLY and willing to do the Q&A thing as long as he can have the room.

This year, you can catch Kevin doing the Q&A panel from 6:15 to 7:45 PM in Hall H, on Friday, July 27th. No word yet on if Kevin will be holding a signing, though we’re guessing that the famous View Askew swag booth will be on the floor, full of bargains on some of the fantastic stuff sold exlusively through Jay & Silent Bob’s Secret Stash.

As always, we URGE you to get to the con early, as Kevin’s appearances always fill to capacity. If they’re handing out tickets, get in line and get one, to ensure you’ll get a seat in the room.

“War of the Undead” From Walt & Bry!

January 14th @ 5:27 pm | No Comments » | Scooped by Sita Suicide

  • A cool piece of news from 2 Askewers we all know and love — Bryan Johnson and Walt Flanagan. The guys have another comic on the way from IDW Publishing, titled “War of the Undead”. Cool concept, too — In 1945, Nazis attempt to control Dracula, Frankenstein, and Wolfman to win the war, and instead lose control and have the monsters attacking THEM as a team! We assume there’s a lot more to it than just that, but the concept certainly does grab ya. Comic Book Resources has the full story and a bunch of beautiful artwork from the book as well. Here’s some clips:
“I’m a sucker for the ‘monster as a hero’ concept and I wanted to take a stab at drawing essentially a super-team of monsters,” Flannigan told CBR news. However, in the beginning, Johnson took a little more convincing. “I had no aspirations of comic creation and wouldn’t have thought of it had Walter not suggested the ‘Karney ‘ adaptation,” added Johnson. “The rest is comics history. At least in my house where publishing a comic is more than the eight preceding Johnson generations accomplished.”

Just as their entry into comic book creation was unusually simple, Johnson and Flannigan don’t collaborate in what could be called the “traditional” way of other writer/artist teams either. ” We talk about the story, spitball ideas and figure out what we want to happen in the issue,” said Johnson. “Walt then goes off and draws whatever he wants and when he’s done I go back and fill in the narrative. From what I understand this isn’t the way it’s normally done. However, I’ve also been told it’s the way ‘Stan the Man’ used to do it. So I’m pretty much exactly like him – except for the talent, money and good looks. Other than that, we’re exactly the same.”

We believe the book is due for release at the end of this month. If either of the guys are reading, send us a copy! We’d love to check it out.
