- A few cool bits dropped from the twitter of @ThatKevinSmith this week so far, including a few words on the “Hit Somebody” script, a peek at the recent Red Bank appearance and Kevin’s stint at the Geek Awards, and good news for those of you who missed those awesome Etnies shoes. Read on:
Even though RED STATE was written pre-weed, I’ve read StonerKev’s first green-induced script (HIT SOMEBODY). As much as I love ClerksKev, StonerKev’s a WAY better writer. Actually, all of StonerKev’s productivity’s through the fucking roof. StonerKev built the SModcast NETWORK!Did #CopOut for the love, not the $$$. Gave up 83% of my salary cuz I believed. Still do. Glad I did, too – as RED STATE came out of it.
Via @LTfeatures “did you see the EPIX video from your birthday party? http://epx.ms/9Vez2X ” I look like DaveSemenko. AFTER he ate Gretzky.
Via @DailyMarauder “At the @GeekAwards. Movie winner Kev just got MrMoviefone to say the word cock” I was pretty proud of that. Big thanks.
Via @moviefone “Pics from the Geek Awards (& our award to @thatkevinsmith) : http://bit.ly/d5R51K ” I will cherish it always. Thanks, folks!
Via @rockerprod “any new etines shoes coming out soon?” @etniesCulture said they’re making 300 more pair in that style, then changing color.
We’ll drop our contact at Etnies a line to find details on when the next set of 300 will arrive, and what the next color might be — Stay tuned, we’re expecting the next 300 pair to sell just as fast as the first batch.

“Clerks” Etnies on Sale – Our Review!
- The long-awaited “Clerks” Kevin Smith etnies shoes went on sale exclusively on their web site, and are selling so fast we’re not even sure any will be left by the time you’re reading this. Hurry on over to grab your size while you still can. Etnies were kind enough to provide a pair of these rare kicks for preview, and here’s our thoughts.
First off, let’s talk about the style and look. The “Clerks” Jameson takes etines popular Jameson style and adds some cool, yet subtle touches.Of particular note is of course the “Clerks.” font which appears on the outsides of each shoe. The folks at Etnies have also taken that font for their own logo which appears across the tongue. The deep black color fits very well with the look of the shoe and makes them stylish for every wardrobe. Other than the text, the design is very subtle and basic, which should make for a pretty versatile shoe that can fit with any wardrobe style.
Last, but certainly not least, the insides of the shoe, when placed together, feature a glimpse at an iconic moment from the “Clerks” film, of Jay and Silent Bob against the stores. Obviously you won’t see this while wearing them, but you’ll know it’s there — And it’s an extra conversation piece if you wanna show them off to your pals. Make sure you’ve got on clean socks and fresh feet first, of course.
How about the comfort level? Well, we’re happy to say these shoes not only look good, they feel great. Jamesons are one of etnies’ most popular and comfortable shoes, so this line was the perfect fit for adopting as a custom Kevin Smith shoe — Their trademarked STI foam makes these the most comfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever walked in. Construction is durable, making it feel like these things would take some abuse pretty well — But let’s face it, these things are too cool to abuse too much. They’re best reserved for special occasions. Once they’re gone, it’s not like you’ll be able to nab yourself a replacement pair.
These beauties are available in very limited supply (we hear only 300 pairs were crafted) and when they’re gone, that’s it. Even if your size is out of stock, it might be worth picking up a pair just to collect them. They are indeed the first and only pair of shoes custom designed for the Askewniverse.
Watch this space for some exclusive photos of our preview pair later today.

- Shock Til You Drop has what they are calling a logline for “Red State” though we don’t think this is necessarily studio official, just a summary of what we’ve known about the film since Kevin revealed he’d written the script a couple years back:
A group of kids encounters a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism.”Just in from Kev’s twitter. He says: ” If I didn’t write it, it’s not official. And I never wrote that.”
“Red State” begins filming on September 22nd.
- “Clerks” comes in at #6 in KoldKast’s list of “The 15 Cheapest Movies that Went on to Become Cult Classics”:
ESTIMATED BUDGET: $27,000Though officially Clerks only pulled in $3 million or so at the box office, its legacy is undeniable. In order to make the film in the first place, Kevin Smith sold most of his comic book collection, maxed out his credit cards, dipped into college funds, and spent the insurance money he’d been awarded when he lost his car in a flood. Long story short, if it had flopped, he would have been in a whole lot of trouble. The film eventually found an audience, spawned sequels, an animated series, and most importantly, launched the nearly fifteen-year career of Kevin Smith. Empire magazine even named it “one of the 500 greatest movies of all time” in 2008.
- Askew vets Rosario Dawson and Ethan Suplee both appear in the trailer for “Unstoppable” from director Tony Scott. The film’s about a runaway train and arrives this November.

- We totally missed the best part of that “bear in car” news story the other day – This screenshot from the broadcast that reports that the news person at this station is a BIG View Askew fan — Sir or ma’am, if you did this, step forward. Bravo! Love it.
- Do Zack & Miri deserve some credit for this one? Geekscape announces that porn company Vivid Video will release an XXX version of Star Wars, in 3D no less. Yes, folks, 3D porn is here. Pre-production has begun for a September 2011 release.

- Kevin talks “Cop Out” with Coming Soon, via this exclusive video clip which runs a whopping eight-plus minutes. Most definitely worth trying. Pick up the “Cop Out” DVD or packed Bluray, now available all over the place. We’ll let you know when the Stash has the online orders up for signed copies, too, collectors — Sit tight.
- In the mood for a little more video? For the past few years, Kevin’s been a huge fan and participant in the Crazy 4 Cult art show. Those of you who weren’t lucky enough to be in the Los Angeles area to attend will be happy to see this excellent 10 minute look at the event, courtesy of G4. Take a look at some of the art, meet some of the aritists, and look for an appearance from Mr. Smith himself.
- Bill Murray revealed that, while he’s never seen “Clerks”, he at least seems to know it exists and was influential in the world of independent film:
“…That’s good. I want those things to work, but I’m out of touch. I have no idea. I never saw the original Office. I never saw this Office. I never even saw Clerks. Like I never saw, what’s-his-name, Larry David’s show.”
Read the entire interview at the GQ website. - Seems that “Mallrats” star Jeremy London will appear as one of the cast of the new season of VH-1’s “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew”. We hope the program is helpful to him.
- Looks like our old pals the Westboro Baptists will be protesting at Comic-Con this weekend. Kevin’s sometime’s spotted trading barbs with one of the Phelps clan via twitter, and it’s been suggested that the family may also have issues with “Red State”, as it allegedly deals with a villain cut from similar cloth, unless the script’s changed since then.

- New York Magazine runs a fantastic NSFW video montage of the “100 Greatest Movie Insults” – We’re particularly fond of the moment at 8:37 (and 2:39!). But seriously, watch it all, it’s truly a great compilation.
- One of the benefits of the annual “Crazy 4 Cult” shows are the cool works with Askew tributes that come out of the woodwork. Check out Dave MacDowell’s “Stand By Snootch” for example.
- It’s pretty easy to guess what Hollywood.com’s list of “The United States of Movies” would select for New Jersey, but still worth a surf over to see that and their other choices on the clickable map.

- Malcolm Ingram’s “Bear Nation” premiered at the SXSW 2010 film festival, and Malcolm Ingram had a few words to say about it on the scene. Check out the trailer HERE. Plug In Music also has a nice piece on the band “The Order of Good Cheer”, whose track “Be My Cub” serves as a theme for the film.
- FilmSnobbery Live recently interviewed producer Bob Hawk, who is often credited as the reason “Clerks” got seen by the Weinstein’s and thus the world. Check out the full length video via blip.tv. Bob had a ton to say, and chatted for a full hour and 4 minutes – Lots about Clerks and Kevin, and just overall interesting info. In August, they’ll sit down with director Malcolm Ingram — We’ll let you know when you can catch that, as well.
- Finally today, due to Banky’s classic “Archie” comics rant in “Chasing Amy”, we found this panel particularly amusing. See ya next time…

- Jason Mewes stars in campy vampire thriller “Bitten”, on DVD this July 6th:
Synopsis:A night-shift paramedic gets a lot more than he bargained for during a routine rescue in “Bitten,” a gruesome thriller. The delicious spine-chiller and Syfy premiere stars Jason Mewes (“Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” “Clerks II”) and Erica Cox (“American Pie Presents Beta House”). A horrifying love story that doesn’t promise a happy ending, the “Bitten” DVD features never-before-seen, too-hot-for-television footage.

Powerhouse Animation: A Walk Down Memory Lane!
- The talented folks at Powerhouse Animation have compiled a spectacular blog post which chronicles their entire history of involvement with Kevin Smith and View Askew Productions. When you view it all at once, it’s quite a resume. These guys have done animations on everything from the “Dogma” Hosties commerical, to the Lost Scene from “Clerks” (on the “Clerks X” DVD), to those Stash-exclusive “Jen Saves Ben” and “Secret Stash” video game consoles.
It’s a fascinating read, which not only includes links to all of the work, but some inside details and memories from the projects that we’d never heard before. Here’s a sample:…Mr. Smith had seen this and asked if we could make a version for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez as a wrap party present for the film Jersey Girl. We wrote a proposal, which Kevin then took and added a bunch of gags and inside jokes and developed the script. We also sent ideas for a Dogma game and a game based off of the Clerks animated series. We had 8 weeks till the wrap of the film, where Kevin wanted to give the arcade machine to them.
We worked most of the hours of those 8 weeks. We were still programming the game when we drove it straight from Austin to New York City in a U-haul attached to Brad’s jeep. We took turns working, sleeping, and driving in shifts. We presented the arcade machine on the last night of shooting, with paparazzi everywhere ruining multiple takes of the final scene. We installed the machine in the couples’ apartment. That part is pretty hazy, I personally only remember that the refrigerator was 100% full of diet-caffeine-free cokes, and showing a bodyguard how to play Frogger on the machine.
