SModcastle Continues To Wow…
- Fans attending SModcastle shows can’t stop talking about the place’s greatness. Recently, lucky fans who went to SMovies saw the rare extended cut of “Jersey Girl”, which has only been screened a handful of times in the past, and is, in our opinion, the superior BEST version of the film. New show “Blow Hard” is taking over Twitter with overwhelming praise, and the breakout hit of the new shows. You can now listen live to the first episode. Kevin’s also placed the first episode of “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old” online, along with a new episode of the original great SModcast, #130. Details and links all contained below via Kevin’s recent twitter posts.
Remember, the 50-seat theater needs to sell out for shows to make their way online. If you can’t be there, buy a ticket and donate it for a local — You’ll help a fellow fan and get one step closer to making that episode available for all to hear.Perhaps the ultimate package for fans is the new SMarriages, where Kevin will conduct a private SModcast episode for you and up to 50 of your friends and family, in the castle, and get you married to boot! Full details at the SMarriages site – Serious inquiries only.
Here’s the latest links and tweets on the happenings at the castle. As always, the latest schedules and ticket purchase info are available online — Purchase single shows OR monthly packages.

The Twitter Report…
- A few cool bits dropped from the twitter of @ThatKevinSmith this week so far, including a few words on the “Hit Somebody” script, a peek at the recent Red Bank appearance and Kevin’s stint at the Geek Awards, and good news for those of you who missed those awesome Etnies shoes. Read on:
Even though RED STATE was written pre-weed, I’ve read StonerKev’s first green-induced script (HIT SOMEBODY). As much as I love ClerksKev, StonerKev’s a WAY better writer. Actually, all of StonerKev’s productivity’s through the fucking roof. StonerKev built the SModcast NETWORK!Did #CopOut for the love, not the $$$. Gave up 83% of my salary cuz I believed. Still do. Glad I did, too – as RED STATE came out of it.
Via @LTfeatures “did you see the EPIX video from your birthday party? http://epx.ms/9Vez2X ” I look like DaveSemenko. AFTER he ate Gretzky.
Via @DailyMarauder “At the @GeekAwards. Movie winner Kev just got MrMoviefone to say the word cock” I was pretty proud of that. Big thanks.
Via @moviefone “Pics from the Geek Awards (& our award to @thatkevinsmith) : http://bit.ly/d5R51K ” I will cherish it always. Thanks, folks!
Via @rockerprod “any new etines shoes coming out soon?” @etniesCulture said they’re making 300 more pair in that style, then changing color.
We’ll drop our contact at Etnies a line to find details on when the next set of 300 will arrive, and what the next color might be — Stay tuned, we’re expecting the next 300 pair to sell just as fast as the first batch.

- Drew Struzan, who has created some of the greatest movie poster artwork ever, is the subject of a new feature-length documentary titled “Drew: The Man Behind the Poster”. The trailer features some fantastic talent and even shows his “Mallrats” work. Find out more at http://drewthemovie.com/
- Jason Mewes will be appearing with the cast of “Todd & the Book of Evil” at FanExpo in Toronto, Ontario. The convention runs from August 27 – 29. Kevin last appeared at this convention back in 1999, where he was presented a personalized Maple Leafs jersey with the number 99.
- Speaking of Mewes, the logline for the film “Big Money Hustlas” says he’ll appear, but we can’t spot him anywhere in the trailer.
- Take a gander at the lovely Ali Larter (“Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back”) who will appear in 3D in the new Resident Evil film , as she discusses the role from a recent con appearance in San Diego.
SModcastle: Be There Again This Weekend!
- With “Red State” filming just about a month away, Kevin’s doing his part to keep SModcastle busy and pack seats, as well as delivering tons of both live and recorded shows, before his schedule gets a little more hectic for a while. Shows are now scheduled for this weekend as well as the following weekend.
Last weekend, SModcastle held its first official weekend of live shows, after July’s grand opening kickoff. Like clockwork, there’s a bunch of shows once again on the slate for this weekend, with programs both old and new. Remember, while these programs are all recorded, they won’t find their way online unless they sell the place out. Only 50 seats are up for grabs for each show. If you’re not in the area, your donated ticket purchase can get a fan in need a free seat, and also help contribute to sellouts (and allow you to contribute to getting shows online).
New programs include “Hollywood Babble On” where Kevin Smith and Ralph Garman will dish on showbiz news, and the breakout star of the castle last weekend, Malcolm Ingram with his newly named program “Blow Hard”, with co-host Kevin Smith. Their “gay clown” show was the most talked about of last weekend, and one we told ya not to miss! This Saturday, the castle also holds its first EA Sports NHL 2010 tourny. There’s also more editions of the always sold-out SModcast 3D (buy before they’re gone), new editions of Highlands 3D and “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old”.
Don’t forget, www.smodcast.com has eidtions of all these shows coming online for you fast, furious, and totally free. Surf over and check out the new front page and the amazing rate at which this podcast network has grown. Bravo to all involved, as the world’s first podcasting theater also becomes the world’s biggest and most popular podcast network!
“Clerks” Etnies on Sale – Our Review!
- The long-awaited “Clerks” Kevin Smith etnies shoes went on sale exclusively on their web site, and are selling so fast we’re not even sure any will be left by the time you’re reading this. Hurry on over to grab your size while you still can. Etnies were kind enough to provide a pair of these rare kicks for preview, and here’s our thoughts.
First off, let’s talk about the style and look. The “Clerks” Jameson takes etines popular Jameson style and adds some cool, yet subtle touches.Of particular note is of course the “Clerks.” font which appears on the outsides of each shoe. The folks at Etnies have also taken that font for their own logo which appears across the tongue. The deep black color fits very well with the look of the shoe and makes them stylish for every wardrobe. Other than the text, the design is very subtle and basic, which should make for a pretty versatile shoe that can fit with any wardrobe style.
Last, but certainly not least, the insides of the shoe, when placed together, feature a glimpse at an iconic moment from the “Clerks” film, of Jay and Silent Bob against the stores. Obviously you won’t see this while wearing them, but you’ll know it’s there — And it’s an extra conversation piece if you wanna show them off to your pals. Make sure you’ve got on clean socks and fresh feet first, of course.
How about the comfort level? Well, we’re happy to say these shoes not only look good, they feel great. Jamesons are one of etnies’ most popular and comfortable shoes, so this line was the perfect fit for adopting as a custom Kevin Smith shoe — Their trademarked STI foam makes these the most comfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever walked in. Construction is durable, making it feel like these things would take some abuse pretty well — But let’s face it, these things are too cool to abuse too much. They’re best reserved for special occasions. Once they’re gone, it’s not like you’ll be able to nab yourself a replacement pair.
These beauties are available in very limited supply (we hear only 300 pairs were crafted) and when they’re gone, that’s it. Even if your size is out of stock, it might be worth picking up a pair just to collect them. They are indeed the first and only pair of shoes custom designed for the Askewniverse.
Watch this space for some exclusive photos of our preview pair later today.
Get Yourself to SModcastle THIS WEEKEND!
- If you’re anywhere near the Los Angeles area, or have the means to get there, this is THE weekend to hit the SModcastle, the world’s first podcasting theater. Following the preview screenings a couple weeks ago, this is the first OFFICIAL weekend of shows, and they’ve got quite a slate of programming, including some brand new stuff.
On Friday, catch the geek-related podcast “Bagged and Boarded” for the bargain price of 10 bucks. Then, Kevin and Scott take the stage for the sold-out SModcast 3D.Saturday’s gonna be a banner day at the castle, with the inaugural run of Saturday morning cartoons, featuring some of the best SModmimations of all time, again for a $10 bargain. That night, at 7 PM, one of the weekend’s main events – Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes will replace Katie Morgan for the week with a BRAND NEW SHOW – “Jay & Silent Bob Get Old”. This one is the perfect companion to Highlands, where Kevin and Jay will talk about their present lives and future plans. A bargain at $25 and not to be missed. That night, Brian Lynch screens his comedy classic “Big Helium Dog”, long sold out. Hopefully they’ll have an encore.
Wrap up the weekend on Sunday with more stars of SMod – At 7 PM, Smith and Mewes are back for more Highlands, where they’ll talk about growing up in Jersey and share some of the best childhood tales. Then, the capper to the weekend and likely to be the most non-stop laughs, as Kevin Smith and Malcolm Ingram take the stage together for “Gay Clown” – Trust us, these guys are a dream team, and the entire room is going to be in stitches before the show’s over. Don’t miss history, the first episode ever of this podcast which will become a regular on the network. A steal at $20. And yes, you can purchase tix and go to as many of these as you like, no limits. All available via the SModcastle tickets portal right now!
No worries on parking, your vehicle will be valet parked when you arrive at the theater, and delivered back to you after the show.
We realize that travel limitations keep a lot of us from making it out for these shows. Kevin has pledged that any event that sells out will be later posted for free on the web for your listening pleasure. So, if you can’t make it, but have the financial means, take a look at Kevin’s Twitter for details on how you can purchase a ticket and then donate it to a local fan in need. That way, the shows sell out, you’ll get to hear it, AND you have the satisfaction of knowing you helped a poor fan in need on the west coast.

- Shock Til You Drop has what they are calling a logline for “Red State” though we don’t think this is necessarily studio official, just a summary of what we’ve known about the film since Kevin revealed he’d written the script a couple years back:
A group of kids encounters a crazed preacher (based on Fred Phelps, founder of the Westboro Baptist Church) who gives a whole new meaning to the term “extreme fundamentalism.”Just in from Kev’s twitter. He says: ” If I didn’t write it, it’s not official. And I never wrote that.”
“Red State” begins filming on September 22nd.
- “Clerks” comes in at #6 in KoldKast’s list of “The 15 Cheapest Movies that Went on to Become Cult Classics”:
ESTIMATED BUDGET: $27,000Though officially Clerks only pulled in $3 million or so at the box office, its legacy is undeniable. In order to make the film in the first place, Kevin Smith sold most of his comic book collection, maxed out his credit cards, dipped into college funds, and spent the insurance money he’d been awarded when he lost his car in a flood. Long story short, if it had flopped, he would have been in a whole lot of trouble. The film eventually found an audience, spawned sequels, an animated series, and most importantly, launched the nearly fifteen-year career of Kevin Smith. Empire magazine even named it “one of the 500 greatest movies of all time” in 2008.
- Askew vets Rosario Dawson and Ethan Suplee both appear in the trailer for “Unstoppable” from director Tony Scott. The film’s about a runaway train and arrives this November.
