“Going All The Way” Test Screening…

  • Devin Clancy got his hands on a screening pass for the new Ben Affleck film, “Going All The Way”, which opens on Setember 19th and is being distributed by (ack) Gramercy Pictures. He’s wrote a nice little review here about the film without giving away any real spoilers. Take it away, Devin…
WARNING: see this as soon as it comes out (sep. 19th I think). It is distributed by Gramercy Pictures who are famous for fouling up the marketing campaign and distribution of any film with Ben Affleck in it (“Mallrats”, “Dazed and Confused”). “Going all the Way” is the story of two men returning from military service in the Korean war era. Jeremy Davies (from “Spanking The Monkey”) plays the former class nerd who still lives with his domineering, religious parents. Affleck is the football star who’s been enlightened just enough by his trip to Japan to know that he needs more enlightenment. They soon become good friends.

I hate reviews that give away the plot, so I’ll just sum up by saying this is a funny and at times disturbing film. View Askew fans will notice certain mannerism common to Affleck’s portrayal of Gunnar Casselman and Holden McNeil. In fact, you can imagine the producers seeing “Chasing Amy” and going, “yeah, that’s what we want”. So if you liked him then (and who didn’t…) you’ll like him in this one. He still delivers lines like “…and then we’ll have ourselves one big fuck-fest” like no other actor in Hollywood.Mark Pellington’s direction is truly visually inventive. He tells a story not just with words and actors but with light and sound as well. It’s a treat to see.

In addition to Davies and Affleck, it also stars Rose McGowan, the chick nailed by the garage door in “Scream”. She is so sensual and just plain hot in this film, despite her brief screen time. Any one of these young actors is worth the effort to go see it. But, as I said above, who knows how long a film like this will be around. At the screening I saw here in Washington, DC, one reviewer walked out after 20 minutes. Bunch of savages in this town.
